Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

I found it bizarrely incredibly nostalgic when the nasa people and astronauts were talking - took me right back to being 8 sat up at my granny’s with crisps and pop watching Apollo 11 in 1969

Same here! All those Apollo missions through childhood really fired my imagination.
I'm glad I've found you all! What a refreshing change from the negative thread.

Agree @Crikeyalmighty . I was 6 then .Am going to bed now….thank you for a lovely thread,am glad I started it. Let’s all hope that the astronauts get back safely! It’s absolutely mind blowing how technology has changed since the 60s 🤦‍♀️X

The NASA guy commentating every step of the way had the most beautiful, calm and intelligent voice. He was locked in and was made for this moment!

Amazing launch. Can't wait to show my space obsessed son tomorrow.

I agree - his voice is just so lovely & calming!

tryingtobesogood · 02/04/2026 00:13

I’m going to have to go to bed but I am having the most amazing memories of being in Florida and all the NASA related things I got to do. I feel incredibly lucky that I saw what I did, to go to the launch pads, see the shuttle on the walker ready to leave the VAB, to see launches, night launches that lit up the sky. Incredible.

I can’t stand American imperialism and arrogance but the space launches are just breathtaking and exciting.

off to continue to listen to Project Hail Mary.

Thank you for the thread, @Nuffpills and everyone else! 🚀 🌎 🌙 ❤️

I don't know much about this but why did it look like it went up then looped down again? I would have thought it was just blasting up? Not being a tin foil hat person just genuinely confused. I'm watching on the nasa youtube

Rotation of the earth, innit

Rocket gets fired straight up but earth continues to rotate. So it looks like it is curving away.

I’m watching on Sky - hearing the go/no go for launch was strangely exciting - I’ve only ever heard it in the Apollo 13 movie!

I found that bit really exciting too! I ended up getting up off the sofa and edging further towards the TV with every "go" 🤣

See even that's too much science for my tiny earthling mind. Id be on the rocket going "why aren't we going straight up?!!?" And then they'd eject me from the mission.

Me too! I thought they’d changed their mind and were going on holiday 🙈

Artemis 2 isn’t just going further than Apollo, it’s also going to the poles. So instead of orbiting the moon around the ‘equator’ it’s going top to bottom, like 12-12 on a clock if that makes sense.

Night all, off to bed (to listen to the livestream as I fall asleep probably)

Given the opportunity I would have been one of those people watching from their camping chairs!

That was fab, loved it!

They're just epic Floyd fans, that's the reason for going!😊

We’ll know that if they send a message back from the dark side of the moon “Wish you were here”.

Wow, The views from the onboard cameras are incredible.

If anyone is interested the channel AstronautiCAST on YouTube post footage of Earth recorded from the ISS very regularly. I love watching them, especially when passing over the UK. But then I wave at the ISS when I get to see her pass over 😆🛰️

I too wave at the ISS.

A friend once asked if they could see me 🙄

If you ever get the chance to do that go for it. I think you’re 7 miles away and you can hear it and feel it in your chest. It’s such an exciting experience.

Or "can someone check if I left the iron on?"

Don't forget the 7 people living on the international space station...

The ISS is within the thermosphere, outer layer of the earth's atmosphere.

PonyPrancing · 02/04/2026 00:21

Sweet dreams everyone.

How lovely! That reminds me of Samantha Harvey's book Orbital, which is told from the perspective of astronauts on the ISS as they watch multiple sunrises every day.

Maybe shoukd plan that for 2028. They landed in the moon the first time when I was a few months old, it would be quite exciting to be there & actually see if almost 60 years later 👍🏻😁

the excitement might get me through it being almost 60 years later!! 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🤣🤣
