Where the hell is my spoon?

I am feeling a bit haunted.
Short story: First world problem. Lost my spoon thrice - seemingly into thin air.

I got given a little cutlery set for my christening by my grandparents. Part of it was the perfect spoon. Not too big. Not too small with a little elephant on the handle.

When I was 18 I took it with me to university and it vanished. I put it down to stupidity taking it there and blamed my housemates. Although I never found it in their draws.

Fast forward and I am still thinking about that spoon and on my 44 birthday I put ‘elephant spoon’ into eBay and one pops up. I am so happy and I got my spoon back (although it probably wasn’t the exact one, obviously).

By 46, the elephant spoon vanished. Out the draw. I blamed my husband taking it to work based on no evidence, and strong denials.

Two weeks before my 47 birthday I go to this antiques place and ask the spoon man if he has one of the elephant spoons. He said no but I said ‘I just think it’s coming back to me’.

On my 47 birthday, husband had found another one on eBay and I got it for my birthday (again). It did come back to me like a Celine Dion song.

Two days ago I looked at the spoon in the draw but decided to go for another one. Today, it’s vanished. Out the draw. Thin air.

Does anyone know where my spoon has gone? Psychics? Scientists? People who have lost spoons?

I can’t believe it!!

Dishwasher?

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 01/04/2026 19:26

Probably my parents' cutlery drawer. They have 63 teaspoons (yes, I counted). Apparently, this is where all the missing spoons go.

N.b. My parents claim they need a lot of teaspoons. For what, I am not sure.

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 01/04/2026 19:26

What is under the cutlery drawer? Is it more drawers? If so pull the bottom one out and look in the back of the unit cavity.
The spoon may have been caught on something, dragged towards the back of the drawer and into the void at the back before it fully closed. It can then drop down the back when other drawers below are opened and make it’s way under the bottom drawer and hidden from sight.

Looked there. I pulled the whole thing out and used a torch.

But thanks for suggesting somewhere 😊

I will blame your parents this time!!

So this is a great suggestion. I did pull it all out and use a torch to look down the back and it wasn’t there.

Husband just hid it so he could get brownie points years later for replacing it 😂 and it went down so well he's done it again.

damelza · 01/04/2026 19:29

I'm sorry to say this, but most spoons end up in the bin thrown out with the jar, yogurt pot or when clearing a bowl etc. Not intentionally but half in a dream kind of way.

Other than that it's on the floor of the dishwasher or in a jar of jam etc. that someone "jammed" the lid on out of laziness, spoon intact.

Oh no…oh I am going to go look in the bin!! Right now. I hadn’t thought of that.

I agree. Turn out the bin.

I lost my favourite fork last year. Disappeared off the face of the earth and I had to resign myself to the fact that it probably went in the bin when I scraped off a plate (which rarely happens because the dog gets the leftovers).

Its April fools day trust no one 🧐

Sweetbeansandmochi · 01/04/2026 19:42

Well thank goodness for pink marigolds because my bin was disgusting. I just pulled it all out and I also went through the recycling.

I think it has gone to spoon heaven with the other two. Hopefully they are having a spoontastic time. I am going to look on eBay though just in case I can get another one!!

Yes I think that's how I lost 5 that were part of my cutlery set. So 6 each of knives forks and soup spoons and 1 teaspoon. Annoying as although not expensive they were the perfect style.

And put a tracker on the new one!...

Probably in the same place as my toothbrush case (which charges and sanitizes). I last saw it more than 6 months ago.

Happy ending 🥰
