Keeping once worn clothes between wears

Where does everyone store their worn clothes? I love with 3 kids and partner and everyone has clothes"they wore just the one time to go to the neighbour's house", or nightclothes to reuse the next night, etc

With 5 multiple sets of worn clothes it gets overwhelming fast! Looking for ideas.

With wool, I wouldn't put it back in the drawer or wardrobe without washing though. Moths love a dirty jumper.

What so you wash your wool sweaters every wear? That’s so bad for them and unnecessary.

My sweaters live in cashmere bags and they go back in the bag and into the wardrobe after wearing.

If something doesn’t need washing/cleaning I put it back away in the wardrobe. If it’s something like a pair of jeans I’m going to wear the next day it goes on the bedroom chair.

My jumpers seem to be fine. Anyway, you can put lavender, rosemary etc in drawers to deter moths.

I'm going to have a Google, but what is a cashmere bag please?

I have one of those ladder things - well, it’s wooden and has rungs and leans against the wall.

They are cotton storage bags for keeping cashmere and precious woollens safe from moths. I use them ever since the bastards ate my white company cashmere dressing gown.

Thanks I've since also googled. I live in fear for my extensive toast knitwear collection. The cupboard where I keep them is full of homemade lavender sachets and moth repellent and moth killing things, and I check everything regularly. I've been lucky so far, but the bags seem like a good idea. Thanks!

PJs go on the bed (and yes, I'm old enough to remember pyjama cases!). If I plan to wear the same garment the next day it goes on the chair, if not it goes back in the wardrobe or drawers.

Even jumpers and jeans? That's terribly wasteful and also completely unnecessary unless you've spilled something down yourself.

I'm not in the UK and there are often notifications on TV here advising that we should be washing clothes less. I can't believe that people seriously think they need to wash things they have only been wearing for a few hours.

Pettifogg · 02/04/2026 21:59

I would never put something I'd worn back in the wardrobe or chest of drawers. They go in a pile on top of the small chest of drawers that I use for work clothes. If I had room for a nice armchair in our bedroom, then I'd probably use that instead. But definitely not back with the clean clothes.

I am almost 67, have been wearing wool and putting garments back in the drawers or wardrobe after wearing all my life and have never had a moth anywhere near my clothes. What is this obsession with moths?? Who on earth washes a wool jumper after one wear?? Confused

NattyKnitter116 · 02/04/2026 22:53

We have moth so at this time of year everything gets rehung in the wardrobe. I wear a clean t shirt, socks and pants every day so everything else back on a hanger. If I feel it needs airing before hanging then I leave it on the bathroom radiator (no moth in there as no carpet). We don’t have linen baskets in the bedrooms, we just bring down what we need to wash in the morning once we are dressed for the day, or sometimes it makes it down in stages over the course of the day (stair piles organisation system). I’m probably unusually in that my partner has many more clothes than me. I tend to exist in jeans/joggers/combats, one colour of t shirt and a few different cardigans/ hoodies. I have lots of brightly coloured socks though :-)

I used to have a horrible chairdrobe but I put up 3 nice decorative coathooks on the wall next to my wardrobe and now fully-clean things go in the wardrobe or drawers and worn-once clean-enough things go on the coat hooks.

Tulipvase · 02/04/2026 23:08

Prob too late to this but I try to hang dresses that I have worn once, inside out.

I also wonder about the obsession with moths. I am 72 and have also been putting clothes back in my wardrobe and drawers after wearing if they do not need wash and have never ever seen a moth.

But why does it matter?

Because clothes I’ve worn before but not dirty enough to need washing I will wear again over my mums or to the supermarket. Clean clothes for going out for dinner or meeting friends for drinks etc.

Recklessismymiddlename · 03/04/2026 22:21

I steam things before putting back in my wardrobe, if they don’t smell and I’ve only worn once.

But I Usually have a cycle of jeans, 2/3 tops on back of my chair which then get washed after 2 wears. I shower & have clean underwear and vest top daily so only ‘outer’ clothes that need washing.

LlamaFluff · 03/04/2026 22:30

Worn clothes go back into the wardrobe. If they’re not clean enough to go into wardrobe they go into laundry basket.
