Keeping once worn clothes between wears

Chalatte · 31/03/2026 12:24

Where does everyone store their worn clothes? I love with 3 kids and partner and everyone has clothes"they wore just the one time to go to the neighbour's house", or nightclothes to reuse the next night, etc

With 5 multiple sets of worn clothes it gets overwhelming fast! Looking for ideas.

Pyjamas are worn for 2 nights and left on beds. Clothes worn outside the house are worn once then washed, would never keep to wear again. We do a wash every day to keep on top of it

vickylou78 · 31/03/2026 15:41

Chairdrobe for my worn once clothes, floordrobe for my husband's worn once clothes and in a pile on ottoman for the kids worn once clothes. Every now and again I'll just wash the whole lot if don't think they'll be worn again quickly.

I just put them back away 🤷🏻‍♀️

If they are clean enough to re wear they are clean enough to go away.

I put them back in the wardrobe too. I don't believe clothes need washing after just one wear, sometimes only for a hour or so. We all need to do less washing to save energy and water. Plus clothes last longer if they are not constantly being washed

MrsClattenburg · 31/03/2026 15:48

This is very odd to me - clothes just go back in the drawers/wardrobe. I have never once seen a moth in my wardrobe (or in the house for that matter!)

I might wear something once then not again for 3 months, does that mean it needs to hang around on a special hook for all that time?

BeeCucumber · 31/03/2026 15:54

If clothes are not dirty enough to wash, the most sensible thing to do is to put them back in the wardrobe. Why clutter up your bedroom chair/floor or dressing room with clothes that you have just worn once?

This is my approach as well. I don’t know why I resisted it for so many years.

I don't leave things that long before wearing again. If I've worn something once, I'll wear it again at the next suitable opportunity.

Clothes worn outside the house are worn once then washed, would never keep to wear again.

I don't wash a jumper or sweatshirt after just one wear. Why would it need it, unless you've spilled something on it? And I might change when I get home (into something from the chair) so 'worn outside the house' might only be worn for a couple of hours.

If I'm putting on a load of washing I might chuck in everything on the chair if it's been worn a few times, but not usually after just one wear.

Does no-one tuck their pyjamas under their pillow any more? That’s what we were taught as kids. We even used to have pyjama cases back in the day which were like a little stuffed toy with a zip in the back that you’d put your pyjamas in to sit on the bed. I’m obviously old! 🤣🤦‍♀️

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 31/03/2026 15:59

On a chair for me. If I had room I'd like on of these Floordrobes

Emmz1510 · 31/03/2026 16:02

If something is clean enough to be worn again I just hang it up in my wardrobe again or put it back in my drawers. I’m thinking particularly jeans and big hoodies which do not need washed after every wear, or things I’ve only worn for part of the day or for an evening out. They just go back to where I keep my clothes. If i am planning on wearing it again the next day, it goes on top of a little suitcase I have tucked away at the side of my chest of drawers, unless it needs hung up.

Pyjamas under pillows in this house.

Other clothes go on top of the laundry basket if being worn the next day or back in the drawer/wardrobe if not. When WFH I can do the same jeans all week.

I get 2-3 wears out of office clothes if I don’t spill food on them (unless it’s hot weather). Never had an issue with moths with putting them in the wardrobe.

smilesy · 31/03/2026 16:05

I am baffled by this. Why wouldn’t they be put back in the wardrobe if they are clean enough to wear again? Does everyone who doesn’t put them away have half empty wardrobes but all other surfaces cluttered with clothes?
And as for washing everything after one wear, what a monumental waste of time, water and electricity, to say nothing of the increased wear and tear on clothing due to excess washing 🤷‍♀️

OneChaosAtATime · 31/03/2026 16:07

We each have a coat stand in our bedrooms. Worn clothes go on that. Kids also have a small bag on theirs for gloves/scarves/hats in winter and hats/sunglasses in summer.

Roundaboot · 31/03/2026 16:09

Pyjamas under the pillow. I'm also old enough to remember pyjama cases!
I WFH several days a week and so will re-wear the same jeans for several days on the trot, so I just leave those on top of the washing basket.
Otherwise, things that have been worn but don't need washing just go back in the wardrobe. I've got several 100% wool jumpers that I really only wash once a season (always worn over a shirt or t-shirt so don't get sweaty and I try not to spill food too much) so can't leave those hanging around on some special hook for months on end.

No moths here either though I do use cedar blocks and lavender bags with the wool jumpers

Badbadbunny · 31/03/2026 16:12

We've an "empty" wardrobe in our spare bedroom where we both put our "used" clothes until the next use

Letty186 · 31/03/2026 16:12

Things I’ll wear next day just get thrown in the end of the bed, things clean enough to wear again get hung inside out in the wardrobe so I remember that next time they go in the wash

murasaki · 31/03/2026 16:13

Draped over the side of the laundry basket rather than in it.

Oh my goodness, that's just unlocked a memory. My Mum had a far too realistic looking toy dog that sat in her bed that had a zipped compartment for her nighty.

I'm currently contemplating this because I've now got nice Ercol chairs and a sidetable sitting in the bedroom bay window. Which is lovely but I don't want them to be chairdrobes, I want to be able to sit and read there. I'm currently considering getting DH a valet stand for all his half worn clothing. I only ever have a few items on mine because I'll happily rewear clothes in quick succession then wash but he seems to want to wear every jumper once before going back to the first one.

wordler · 31/03/2026 16:27

Someone created a special chair for this for herself and so many people loved the video she made that she’s turned it into a product you can buy.

Alwaytired44 · 31/03/2026 17:03

One of the very best tips I ever received was to put clothes that had already been worn, on a backwards hanger. So all your freshly washed stuff would be on a hanger facing the right way but all stuff that had already been worn was on a backwards hanger. It’s such a good system!

ThatLimeBiscuit · 31/03/2026 17:06

I’ve stuck a few Command hooks inside my wardrobe for “lightly worn” clothes and my WFH clothes. My PJs go on hooks in my en-suite next to my dressing gowns!

henlake7 · 31/03/2026 17:10

I have room enough that I was able to buy a seperate rail with shelves for worn stuff.
Before that though I just went with the chairdrobe.

Catcatcatcatcat · 31/03/2026 17:12

Floordrobe.

I am sixty, and according to my adult DC I “live like a teenager.”

DJKATIE · 31/03/2026 17:15

Keep on a shelf but never put back in the wardrobe or drawers unless washed

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2026 17:15

They go on hangers which are then hung from a hook on my door (exercise gear - just Pilates so not sweaty!), end of bookcase (trousers - I usually have smart, jeans and walking trousers on the go) and other things like cardis from wardrobe doorknobs.
