Keeping once worn clothes between wears

Where does everyone store their worn clothes? I love with 3 kids and partner and everyone has clothes"they wore just the one time to go to the neighbour's house", or nightclothes to reuse the next night, etc

With 5 multiple sets of worn clothes it gets overwhelming fast! Looking for ideas.

I just have a separate small basket for them. If it builds up and I don't end up wearing things again within a week or two, I will just wash it and put it away.

DD2 has done this, it's a sensible option that looks better than a chairdrobe, I may have to copy her.

Changename12 · 01/04/2026 09:58

Usually, I wash or hang over a chair.
If you keep putting clothes that have been worn back in the wardrobe then your wardrobe will develop a not so nice smell.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 01/04/2026 09:59

Floor. Top of chest of drawers.🤦‍♀️. DS is worse ....they could be anywhere, including in his bed. Husband moans but then he has been known to put his worn clothes on top of clean ones he hasn't put away yet.

This has not happened. If the clothes smelled they would be washed and not put back. No new smell has developed. Only fragrance is sometimes a waft of whatever perfume I’d been wearing last time.

FancyCatSlave · 01/04/2026 10:09

I love these threads - little insights in to what we each think is “right” or “normal” when their is evidently no such thing 😂

It’s no wonder many people don’t like living with other people. It’s very hard to find someone who thinks the same. “Where do you like to store your worn clothing?” should be an OLD question for sure. Along with morning or evening showers, towel changes and plate vs bowl.

If they smell then they aren’t clean enough to wear again. Thanks to decent deodorant that’s rarely the case. Worst case they smell of perfume.

Elanol · 01/04/2026 11:13

I have a drawer for them.

Well I have been putting clothes back in my wardrobe that I am going to wear again for years and I can assure you it does not smell.

I do what my Mum has done and her Mum before her. We've never washed clothing everyday, why would you need to unless its dirty? Jeans, jumpers, even tshirts etc, can generally be worn again. Largely I put them back away. Although if I know its going to be worn the next day and I'm being lazy I just fold them up and put them on the ottoman at the end of my bed, with the sock amnesty (lonely socks waiting to see if their pairs ever come out of the wash).

Could not agree more. Just why are people washing clothes that do not need it? It is recommended that jeans are only washed every 5 to 10 wears.

A lot of jeans aficionados never wash jeans at all - or at the very most only once every few months (cold hand wash, inside out, drip dry).

I have a valet rod in my dressing room to hang worn clothes on that I will wear again, or I put back in the wardrobe but with the hanger facing the other way around which indicates the item has been previously worn.

OneBusyFinch · 01/04/2026 12:34

I’ve got a valet stand - like this

Isn't the 'hanger the other way round' a way of identifying which clothes you never wear and so can sell/charity shop/ recycle them?

But why does it matter?

Tokek · 01/04/2026 17:25

Top of chest of drawers. I've read too much about once worn clothes attracting moths if placed in the wardrobe to risk doing so, as much as some people might say they've done it with no ill effects.

This has reminded me that I do need to check how many times jumpers can hygienically be worn before washing, though. They do tend to pile up in winter and I should probably chuck them in the wash more often just to avoid that. I can't fathom washing jumpers after every wear though, the second bedroom would become even more of a permanent drying room than it is now (it's not like you can tumble dry yarn based items).

1000StrawberryLollies · 01/04/2026 17:30

On hangers in the right-hand end of my wardrobe. Or back in the drawer if it's a jumper. Wool jumpers don't need, and don't like, frequent washing.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 01/04/2026 17:32

The floor 😂
it’s usually only “house comfies” to be fair and they go on when I come in and take my work uniform off.

Jeans I just hang up in the wardrobe and everything else I only wear once and chuck it on the wash basket

HelenaWilson · 01/04/2026 17:45

I don't keep once-worn things out of the wardrobe for fear of moths. It's because I would lose track if I put everything away. If there's a shirt or blouse hanging up in the bedroom, I know to wear that and finish it off before I get another clean one out.

Same for jumpers, leisurewear etc. I've got more than one navy t-shirt, more than one set of navy joggers. If I put everything back in the drawer each time, I would lose track.

HostaCentral · 01/04/2026 17:48

We all have chairdrobes. I thought everyone did 😀

I just put them back away 🤷🏻‍♀️

If they are clean enough to re wear they are clean enough to go away.

Exactly this. Why do they need to be held separately?

With wool, I wouldn't put it back in the drawer or wardrobe without washing though. Moths love a dirty jumper.

I only rewear something once and only very occasionally. If it was smelling at all it would never be reworn without washing it first.
