Driving an insured car for an under 21. Used to be popped on Mum or Dad's insurance policy for a few quid extra, now thousands of pounds for some young people.

That totally depends on the car, my first car cost me £1000 in insurance for a year. That was 30 years ago, DD's cost £650 that was last year. Neither where big cars both 1Lt engines.

We also used add on insurance for her learning to drive so didn't have to pay for a full year and was cheaper then adding her to our policy.

Going to gigs.
Dog ownership
It is still reasonable to ho to gigs at places such as o2Ritz or the Academy.
However supporting new music at grassroots levels is great. Affordable and its great seeing artists at pretty much the beginning of their journey.

Dogs, yes, my three take virtually every thing I have! ( and that's ok! I love them to bits)

Great suggestion!

Thanks, it is a great deal.

I should have said - if anyone would like an invite to Monzo, DM me. We can both get a random amount of up to £100 each if you join.

BeardofHagrid · 31/03/2026 08:23

Eating fish and chips! It was a poor person’s meal. I used to love it. Now I’ll never be able to afford it again 🥲

OonaStubbs · 31/03/2026 08:24

Buying a record in the 70s cost the equivalent of £30 in today's money, but going to watch a top division football team cost the equivalent of £5, at least on the terracing. It's a con IMO.

Wellthisisdifficult · 31/03/2026 08:26

Actually, none of this has been ruined by activities becoming a rich persons hobby. What has ruined all these things is the idea that they should be accessible to all (with the exception of football which has been ruined by idiots elevating a group of blokes to God like status because they are better than average at kicking a bag of air between two jumpers in the park./stopping some other guy kicking a bag of air through some jumpers).

We have demanded that living wage/NMW has increased, that welfare goes up. It’s pushed manufacturing out of the UK. At the same time technology has given the impression that everyone has a right to things. Credit is available everywhere which has skewed the market.

Again with the ridiculous exception of football what has really pushed the market is that middle class things have become within reach (or at least they think the have of poorer people). This has pushed demand and therefore prices.

Your gig ticket is expensive because everyone demanded free/cheap access to recoded music. Tours used to be the loss maker designed to advertise the real money maker - the record. Factory workers/lorry drivers were paid an amount which meant that manufacturing could stay in the UK and workers could afford to buy their products.

Technology has enabled globalisation and the exploitation of people in far off places (yes slavery is still alive and well) when lesser exploitation locally has been hailed a success but has actually triggered a lot of people being worse off. Capitalism relies on three very distinct classes in a pyramid- the pyramid has become a very misshapen diamond with nearly everyone grouped together near the bottom

Dog ownership.

Second this. Vet fees are pricing people out of pet ownership in general. They are so greedy that they wont have any custom when people stop having pets. Idiots.

Pets
My cats (2) vost me about £220pcm.

😲Hearing this makes me wonder how on earth people with children & on an average income can afford to keep cats or dogs.

@Redheadedstepchild what is the late night chip van please?

I'm having visions of it being something that drives around like an ice cream van 😂 but at 2 am.

Well, back in the 1980s north-east, when I used to go ‘down the town’ on a Saturday night, the chip van, or alternatively the burger van, would be waiting in a convenient spot outside the pubs and then the nightclubs at closing time to feed all us tipsy revellers. It smelt fantastic and it was so cheap! Happy memories. 😀

You're unlikely to be going to 19 concerts a year...
Are you actually serious?
I've been to 12 already. I've been to gigs at the Apollo, Ritz o2, Brundell social club, band on the wall, invisible wind factory, Co-op live, Manchester warehouse , Bootleg social, so a mixed bag of venues and still got more planned.

I'm not an exception. There's plenty of people that love going to gigs and easily exceed 19 a year.

Jesus! I’ve been to barely more than 12 gigs in my entire life. And I’m galloping towards 60!!

Horseriding.

I spent most of my teens riding. We tacked up before every ride, cleaned the stables, fed. All of it.

DD started doing it and DP (not her dad) see it as a toffs sport. I’m fuming.

Agree! My parents couldn’t afford to pay for me to have lessons (mid 90s) so I got a paper round aged 13 and earned enough to have a lesson once a fortnight plus give my mum some money for petrol to take me. Think the lessons were £12 per hour for a group class.

My 12yo has been riding for about a year - £42 for a half hour shared lesson (group lessons are £35 for 45 mins but there are no spaces available at a time we can do)! She rides every other week and I insist she untacks her pony and puts him away herself after every session, not like the other kids who just hop off and chuck the reins at the staff.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 31/03/2026 08:33

Top football club tickets cost more because fans demand more. Many stadia have been rebuilt or improved and look at the price of players!

Theatre costs: I find them reasonable. I find the Royal Opera House expensive but even there you don’t need to spend£200 on a decent seat. I’m not sure where posters are going to spend that amount.

Dogs: I’m saying this kindly - dogs were put down. No one spent £zillions on vet fees years ago. Owners were far more accepting that some pets had a shortened life. They didn’t see pets as a child. So costs have accelerated because people have changed their views on pets.

Concerts: yes, they cost a lot. We go occasionally to big venues (not a huge fan) but much prefer smaller ones! Cheaper too.

Insurance of cars: younger people have more accidents. It’s a risk issue. Dc can wait a bit.

Pet ownership like other people have said. But also literally anything enjoyable has become too expensive. About all i am prepared to afford to do is going for a walk. Most of the time I cant justify the amount things cost. Crazy golf is ridiculous and it costs hardly anything for the business to maintain. Bowling is the same. Cinema ridiculous but it always was.

Holidaying in the UK! Just too expensive now. The cost of holiday cottages and b&bs has shot up, plus petrol and eating out.

This is very true, we're going with my siblings and all kids in the summer, a rental in France was half the price of anywhere in the UK.

Completely disagree about Lego though, you can often get quite large 'Creator' sets from £12.

Other things really seem to stagnate. A decent pair of shoes is not that much different in price to 40 years ago.

ButterBastardBeans · 31/03/2026 07:09

Pet ownership. I have always had dogs but couldn't afford to meet a dogs needs financially now.

The farmer at the bottom of my land moved in with his daughter and left three cats and I've been feeding three of them now for the last two years because they were in a pitiful state. The food cost alone is massive but if any of them got ill or injured, I have no clue what I would do. I'm on a small fixed income.

If it comes to it, there might be a PDSA/Vets Now in your area.

They treat animals for those on low incomes, and if the animal isn’t yours/is stray they will treat free of charge. I found a stray who was very poorly last year and my local vet told me about them x

ruffler45 · 31/03/2026 08:41

The law of supply and demand seems to still operate, some people are willing to pay huge (stupid for many people) prices so people supply it.

I can very much recommend starting to follow the WSL and go to their matches instead. Just as exciting and much cheaper!

I second this. It's brought back my love of football.

A season ticket at my club equates to £33 a game. I don't think that's "rich person" territory. It's less than most concerts.

It's also very much the exception in the PL, and my guess is at all ground that was handed to the club by the LA and is much too big for them.

Well concerts of anyone known are pretty unaffordable now!

Because that's the only way many artists make decent money anymore.

mjf981 · 31/03/2026 09:03

Buying a decent house with a garden bigger than a postage stamp.

ETA - not a hobby I guess, but still a frustration..
