Concerts.

I love the theatre and go often, but tend to go with a friend and we just pay for ourselves - taking our families pushes the cost up enormously. I agree that gigs depend - I’ve been to a few things recently (and have a few things coming up) where the tickets have been very cheap but we’ve had a brilliant night.

Caravan holidays, used to be basic now very luxurious home from home (maybe even better)

unfortunately the acts were told their value. there is a way to possibly reverse the trend but requires the audience to not be there

When I was younger, musicians made their money selling records, gigs were just promotion of new material and not a cash cow. Now people get their music online, often not paying and the gigs are a big part in making money and a lot of that is due to selling merchandise on tour too. If musicians don't make money because people won't go and they also won't pay for the music they take, there will be a whole lot less music.

A season ticket at my club equates to £33 a game. I don't think that's "rich person" territory. It's less than most concerts.

£41 for mine. North west, blue, not in Manchester. Not awful pricing on its own.

But the season ticket waiting list is years long and taking my daughter to a single would cost £50+. A beer inside the ground is now £7. A pie is £7. They’re optional and I buy neither but it isn’t really a working class sport now.

@Redheadedstepchild what is the late night chip van please?

I'm having visions of it being something that drives around like an ice cream van 😂 but at 2 am.

I live near 3 pubs, one almost opposite. Apparently there used to be a fish van, like an ice cream van, that went to the pubs at closing - people would buy their cockles and whatever horrid stuff to eat after a skinful. I couldn't think of anything worse to mix with a belly full of beer!

Mackerelfillets · 30/03/2026 22:14

Caravanning. Used to be a cheap alternative....not any longer!!

JehovasFitness · 30/03/2026 22:16

Getting lunch from the butty shop. I paid £8.50 for a pastrami sandwich on wholemeal bread. Nope.

Xanadu78 · 30/03/2026 22:17

Sewing, patterns and fabric have gone so expensive.

Edited

Still small acts out there charging 10 or 20 pounds. But arena shows are ruled by Ticketmaster who know the market. As long as people want to pay 100s for an experience those prices will continue.

Hohofortherobbers · 30/03/2026 22:17

A large glass of wine in a pub....£13 last Friday!!!!!😲

begonefoulclutter · 30/03/2026 22:18

Going for a nice walk in our local woods. Totally ruined now by the hordes of entitled shouty men in lycra who hurtle around the paths and trails on mountain bikes, yelling "Get out of the way" at you. They think they own the place.

They don't even cycle to the woods - they arrive in bloody great 4x4s.

OneOfEachPlease · 30/03/2026 22:20

I can very much recommend starting to follow the WSL and go to their matches instead. Just as exciting and much cheaper!

LuckyManifestations · 30/03/2026 22:21

Camping.
Prices have soared since lockdown.

Concerts tend to be £75 starting price these days for anything at a stadium.

I've got 14 gigs booked for the rest of this year and don't think I'm all that unusual.

And I said my season ticket price equates to £33 a game. Its about £50 a game for a ticket. They also offer affordable ticketing and the kids tickets are cheap.

14 gigs a year!!! That is unusual

Small acts won't be earning much money, if at all, same as small venues. They need the ticket sales and the merch to be sold. Small acts are trying to get known for the most part.

It was a wonder to behold in Belfast at 2am in the early 2000's.The swishing of the hot oil in the fryer as it careened around the corners serving sustenance to the weary and emotional. So yes, very much like an ice cream van but better.

I have also come across this phenomenon in my dear adopted home of Corsica where you used to be able to access all manner of greasy in the early hours.

Until the council put a stop to it and you just have to starve coming off the nightshift.

The Food Truck will be open for exactly nine hours a week at times when nobody is hungry and it might sound quite nice but finding it in its obscure location AND got the serving hatch up is like hunting for Bigfoot.

Presuming you do find them, they are open and not either, "Just opening" or "Just closing" you'll be lucky to get away with change for 30€ and it's never all that.

Going to the theatre. I keep trying to take our family of 5 at Christmas but can’t face spending £1000 on it. I mean I could just spend £600 and sit in seats where no one can see what’s going on, or give them their Christmas treat on a random Wednesday in February, but it ruins the magic somewhat 🙄

Or you could go locally which is what we used to do. DD and I saw Ballet Shoes at the National on 22nd December for about £160 for two of us.

ChaToilLeam · 30/03/2026 22:27

Definitely sewing! It used to be the way for people with less money to have nice clothes and linens for their homes. My grandmother sewed everything herself! And now it's all fast fashion while the price of decent fabric has skyrocketed. I still see but it isn't an inexpensive hobby unless someone's giving away fabric from their grandma's old stash or selling bale ends cheaply.

But that's a huge amount of money - surely you recognise that 😲

@Redheadedstepchild what is the late night chip van please?

It's something small and vaguely white, that parks at the side of the road or in a layby off a dual carriageway somewhere, generally grubby looking exterior with faded hand painted sign announcing Dave's Burgers (or similar) on it. Staff in a dirty apron, no gloves or hairnets anywhere (the hands that took the cash payment also handled your roll, the paper serviette your roll was handed to you in and the cigarette smoked while waiting for customers, but nobody died), with probably dubious food hygiene standards and very cheap very basic food that didn't have fancy names. You weren't getting a latte, a venti or a cappuccino. You got weak instant coffee, weak tea made with generic cheap teabags, or one measly spoonful of hot chocolate mixed with water and a splash of milk. It was disgusting, but hot and cheap. As a vegetarian I could have greasy, hand cut, pan fried chips like my mum made on Fridays, or fried egg roll cooked on the same grill plate as the sausages/burgers - and no I didn't dream of complaining, I ate it gratefully because I'm not a pretentious knob. There may have been the odd limp lettuce leaf or slice of tomato in the roll too, if available and wanted. It was the roadside, nighttime equivalent of the daytime "greasy-spoon cafe (caff)", which nobody called a "caf-ay" [sic] ever, unless they were very posh and spoke like the queen (they also wouldn't have been anywhere near a greasy-spoon cafe).

Redheadedstepchild · 30/03/2026 22:31

@EmeraldRoulette Some chip vans are of a fixed location. Like in a layby on a trunk road. We still do have their spiritual cousins here, the pizza van. Running a wood fired oven in small caravan is not for the faint of heart.

Heroes.

MidnightPatrol · 30/03/2026 22:32

I don’t think most of these have anything to do with these things being ‘a rich persons hobby’.

eg theatre is expensive because the cost of putting on a show is so huge.

Or have I misunderstood the phrasing of the question?
