Lego.

A season ticket at my club equates to £33 a game. I don't think that's "rich person" territory. It's less than most concerts.

Going to the theatre. I keep trying to take our family of 5 at Christmas but can’t face spending £1000 on it. I mean I could just spend £600 and sit in seats where no one can see what’s going on, or give them their Christmas treat on a random Wednesday in February, but it ruins the magic somewhat 🙄

Morepositivemum · 30/03/2026 21:37

Well concerts of anyone known are pretty unaffordable now!

SpottyAlpaca · 30/03/2026 21:39

Going to gigs.

ST holders tend to be better protected but numbers are being limited as clubs realise they can rinse non ST match attending fans for £££.

To take my son to a game at our PL club it’s a £100 afternoon out.

Have a look at smaller theatres, rather than those in big cities. We saw Six at a theatre in the northwest. It was about £28 each for good seats.

You're unlikely to be going to 19 concerts a year...

You sound like those companies who know they're expensive and have to break it down to something that sounds reasonable ... like a over priced farm play area family membership or whatever" " only £3.72 per day pp!"

This! There have been a few things that I’d love to see as a family but just decided against it because it costs hundreds. The best we’ve done is one parent takes one child but it feels a bit miserable.

Concerts tend to be £75 starting price these days for anything at a stadium.

I've got 14 gigs booked for the rest of this year and don't think I'm all that unusual.

And I said my season ticket price equates to £33 a game. Its about £50 a game for a ticket. They also offer affordable ticketing and the kids tickets are cheap.

burblish · 30/03/2026 21:46

Theatre, definitely - I used to go at least monthly, but it has been too expensive for some years now to go more than once or twice a year (if that). Even the fringe theatres I used to go to regularly are no longer affordable if you want seats with a decent view of the stage. I miss it.

SanFranBear · 30/03/2026 21:48

Festivals... probably just the way of the world but I could afford them as a lowly student, no chance now... ☹️

It is expensive, especially if you’re taking a couple of kids. For reference, a ticket on the Kop at Anfield in the late 70s was 80p. That’s the equivalent of £4.76 today.

Traditionally football was a working class sport that families would enjoy together. Now the average Joe can’t afford to attend regular games with their children. My Dad used to take me and my brothers and it’s the only thing I ever really did with my Dad. It’s really sad that children these days won’t have memories of the whole matchday ritual.

dailyconniptions · 30/03/2026 21:50

Buying shepherds' huts.

hahabahbag · 30/03/2026 21:52

The reality is that you can access gigs, sports etc far less if you support local teams, local bands etc. it’s £10 for adults a free for under 18’s at our local football club, local rugby and cricket are free to watch. Every Saturday we watch bands, again free though we do buy drinks

The late night chip van or other godsend that has turned into, "The Food Truck." Not open at 2am though.

Stand Up Comedy. Although there was always the Cambridge Footlights crew who could be very funny but I've been left cold by most genteel comedy of the last ten or so years. Both British and American. I dip into a bit of French comedy as well but that seems to be all quite safe, boring and middle class.

Cheap cuts of meat. They aren't cheap anymore and then, on top of everything else, you can't afford the fuel to cook them for hours and hours.

None of the above were exactly hobbies back in the day but they've turned into a form of pastime.

Happyjoe · 30/03/2026 22:03

EmeraldRoulette · 30/03/2026 22:05

@Redheadedstepchild what is the late night chip van please?

I'm having visions of it being something that drives around like an ice cream van 😂 but at 2 am.

unfortunately the acts were told their value. there is a way to possibly reverse the trend but requires the audience to not be there

Yachting and boating.

Pedallleur · 30/03/2026 22:08

cycling. Bikes, components, clothing all mysteriously became more unattainable as prices rose and second marketing was targeted at people with high disposable income.
