What is the difference between interview under caution and being arrested and interviewed under caution? I thought in all sexual offences the suspect was arrested?

NoCareNoFair · 31/03/2026 11:20

Just pointing out I said "serious sexual offences" as that is the wording the BBC used.

In 1997? What was he doing at that time at the BBC, I dont even remember him!

I remember him on Top of the Pops in 1999.

He joined Radio 1 in 1998 so maybe dates are wrong?

Or SM has admitted it. That is my take.

Why would you admit something seven years after a police investigation was dismissed?

Passingthrough123 · 31/03/2026 11:23

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/03/2026 11:12

Whoah! Well I hope he does get charged and prosecuted for this.

But if the police found no case to answer in 2019, what's changed?

I think interview under caution is when you go to the police station voluntarily to be interviewed.

Yet another BBC paedophile

I had a relationship of sorts when I was 15 with a high profile 27 year old. It didn't get as far as sexual but not for want of trying on his part. In fact that's why he dumped me. I lied about my age and he thought I was 19.

There was also a footballer called Adam something jailed for a similar thing. I think he thought the girl was 16+.

They weren't right but they weren't paedophilic.

KidsDoBetter · 31/03/2026 11:24

likelysuspect · 31/03/2026 11:19

I didnt use my own term 'throw it out' I was using the previous posters terminology. I know they dont 'throw things out'.

Yes the alleged victim often doesnt want to follow through with statements, but then saying that, the decision about that took a couple of years by all accounts.

Gotcha re the term.

Yes - SM was interviewed in July 2018 and the investigation closed in May 2019. So the decision by the CPs would have been taken between those dates.

Passingthrough123 · 31/03/2026 11:25

BeforetheFlood · 31/03/2026 11:02

My immediate assumption was that the 'teenage boy' involved has resurfaced. The CPS could have concluded in 2018 that there was insufficient evidence, leaving the victim feeling frustrated and angry. In that situation it would be very hard to watch your (alleged) abuser climb the ranks in a very high profile and well paid career and perhaps he reached the point where he was willing to get 'justice' without going through a creaking legal system that has challenging limitations around prosecution/conviction for sexual offences. After all the other failings, the BBC couldn't afford to be seen to turn a blind eye again.

I'm being careful how I phrase this to leave room for doubt on both sides.

Possibly triggered by the Huw Edwards Channel 5 drama.

Well I'm sure we'll find out the truth in due course.

Jeremy vine.was interviewed on the steps (i think) of the BBC he looked quite gleeful about it with a weird grin on his face, It was really Strange maybe was devising his phone in.

NoCareNoFair · 31/03/2026 11:36

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1997 and 2000. The BBC says a teenage boy under 16. So the same teenager for who time period. Was he a teenage boy for all three of those years?

StasisMom · 31/03/2026 11:36

likelysuspect · 31/03/2026 08:38

Im not sure grooming existed as a crime in the 90s

Where are you getting this information from?

I thought it was said he was interviewed under caution, which means he was cautioned and in those cases I think the police decide not to charge?

Sorry, not further than your post so someone else may have commented, but interview under caution isn't the same as being cautioned: it's where you're given the "Anything you do say may be used against you..." spiel.

storminabuttercup · 31/03/2026 11:37

@Passingthrough123nope, he mentioned it in that kind of handover vernon didn’t comment on that or the next feature he mentioned it was very awkward

The interview is the same but you can be invited for a voluntary interview whereby the accused has not been arrested.

ProudAmberTurtle · 31/03/2026 11:37

BBC just revealed the boy was under 16

Gosh, you're right, it's listed as content on his show. (I did have to check the date, I've been thinking it's April 1st today). Blimey, that is quite something.

Yeah, Vernon clearly didn't know what to say, it was so awkward. It is very strange to do that as a segment on his show.

Letsgobaby26 · 31/03/2026 11:42

Too soon Jeremy.

Plus Vernon has been through this media scrutiny when he cheated on Tess with the messaging.

I taught with someone who was accused of grooming a teenage girl 15 years ago. Not enough evidence so no charges brought. Ten years on his school investigated it when they were made aware and the teaching standards agency felt he was guilty and he was struck off from teaching - I assume it's like this.
