Paper candidate or real

Reform UK's (sole) candidate for Brixton Windrush ward in Lambeth is named as Oliver Cromwell Khan.

That's a made up name and it's madness.

TW 2nd paragraph MH
I work in welfare benefits and will sometimes post to correct, literally facts such as the amount of personal allowances, not whether a good or bad thing. If it is acknowledged it is discounted or they accept that the amount and begin to argue that the people claiming are not worthy/scroungers. There are a few of us, but mostly given up. I’m often under a different name.

I wish sometimes they were on the phone listening to the desperation of some calls when circumstances change through illness, child disability or separation. Not unusual for clients to have suicidal thoughts. Hardly ever just one issue - job loss, leading to depression, then partner burnout due to being a carer then trying to organise the whole family.

Edited

I’ve tried posting facts about immigration on various platforms - I’ve worked in that area. These are usually laughed at and I’m told I’m wrong. It is quite baffling - these people who are angry about an issue cannot accept they have got something wrong (edited to add - even if it would stop them looking silly at best)

I try not to pass comments such as ‘it’s actually this and stop being horrible’ and just put ‘it’s actually this’ but no matter - I think these people’s arguments against immigration or benefits or anything would be more well rounded and robust with factual facts and they don’t of themselves knock all debate out of the water at all, but they’re never accepted let alone welcomed.

I can imagine the desperation you hear - you do a difficult role and stuff like that isn’t normally even on the job description- tough for you and thank you for doing it.

You’re fighting against decades of propaganda and misinformation (disinformation) playing into existing prejudices and misdirected anger.
It suits people not to look too hard at often obviously incorrect information.

Restricted flights to Europe is Lockdown again. Thanks to a man who is incontinent and just happens to be the President of the US.

Meanwhile Reform UK do the usual thing and lick the 🍊 backside.

Don't despair yet - the article has a lot of ‘could’ and ‘fear’ in it. You might be ok. I’m due to go to Carcassonne at they’d if this month and Greece at the end of May so I, too, have fingers crossed.

Hopefully. The Guardian does tend towards the doom and gloom these days.

Just thought, not only do I have my 2 bucket list trips - Galapagos and trekking in Nepal booked I have a visit to DS2 who lives in Finland booked as well. Cancel that and I shouldn't be held responsible for my actions.

Llttledrummergirls · 10/04/2026 19:52

We have booked the train this year. We start in Paris and our last destination is Warsaw before heading home via cologne so hopefully our plans should be OK.

Thank you for trying, Ranty. I have spent hours in the past trying to counteract the shite posted.

I have even tried lobbying MNHQ to get a bit stricter on the more obvious benefit bashing crap. But mostly to no avail. I have largely given up on it now, but do get sucked in sometimes.

Thanks also for the the work you do helping people in need.

I made a similar Observation to Husband, when he was incredulous that people were upset about holidays being cancelled, saying it was such a trivial thing with the state of the world. He can be a right curmudgeon, sometimes. I pointed out to him that the actions of certain dickheads will be costing people their livelihoods and general wellbeing, just like the pandemic and even more so if everyone sits around being miserable, with no good reason, while the dickheads just line their pockets.

Yes, I saw that one.

Ah well. Give it a week or two and it will cycle back to immigration again.

A poster on another thread described the Reform propaganda machine as being like a tripod from War of the Worlds, stalking social media. Spot on. It is in action everywhere.

But they lost the by election in Kent from a seat they held. Hardly the Wehrmacht the press are portraying them as.

The UK has had to shelve (postpone) the Chagos deal because it has still not received a formal exchange of letters from the US - a legal necessity required for the treaty to be enacted.

I am sure Nige will crow victory

If we need US permission to act, then they aren't sovereign, are they ?
