The most brazen benefit bashing thread yet just started up. No one can tell us Reform aren't running a campaign on here now...

I saw the OP and noticed it was copied from Jenrick. Posters have mentioned it too

So, MN should take it down, right?

Just saw that thread it’s ramping up again I presume as polling day draws closer.
along with Brexit the privatisation of utilities & transport has been an unmitigated disaster plus all the other services that have been outsourced from local authorities, we would have been in a much better place during covid as well if the local public health departments hadn’t been decimated by cuts would have saved shedloads of £££ instead of that shyster Dido Harding & the T&T fiasco.

"I'm fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy businesses bills go up and down on energy because of the actions of Putin or Trump across the world," he said.

It's appalling.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 09/04/2026 21:05

I absolutely agree that the benefit bashing threads are just dreadful. Some people think anybody who claims benefits should be walking around in sackcloth and ashes. HOWEVER, I do have an issue with using UC as a measure of poverty and access to fuel support/ fsm/ access to activities etc.
The reality it is a tickbox exercise.
If me and my partner have one child and earn £36k and rent at £600 ( social housing ) we get around £300 a month in UC
If me and my partner have one child and earn £36k and pay £600 in mortgage payment we get nothing.
Who has the most disposable income? Which child is more likely to be in poverty?
Who is more likely to be in fuel poverty as rental properties have to meet at least E.
Private property doesn’t.
Maintenance costs etc.
I honestly think there should be more discretion for low earning house owners.
I am in no way a “ benefit basher” but I do ant all our families to thrive.

PickAChew · 09/04/2026 22:13

The problem that the benefit bashers blame benefit recipients for the harshness of the cut off where families on very modest incomes get no extra help rather than blaming the corporate greed and years of austerity that have brought that cut off point down and meant that so many people are paid wages that fall short of affording them the basics. Let's add to that the erosion of social housing provision which means that in areas like my small northern university city, if a house comes up for rent at under £1000 pcm, people are queuing up to view it.

But somehow this is the fault of the people who receive benefits (and, often.people in social housing)

ThatbloodyRoblox · 09/04/2026 23:11

Absolutely @PickAChew. The Government could do much better with discretion on FSM/ fuel support etc. People could just send their P60s and access that extra support. We literally ( in my county ) asked for proof of income to give people £110 from the household support fund. It shouldn’t be that difficult to give support to low earning families that don’t meet the tick box of UC.

Money is the operative word, I think. I had a quick look at the thread (started by a brand new name, what a surprise!) and it is almost full already. Lots of traffic = £ for MN.

Donald Trump has lost Lord David Frost

"A moral line has to be drawn somewhere and this week Trump went beyond it"

"Sadly – and I say it with deep regret – we in Europe have to acknowledge that this is now part of a pattern"

This is "Mr Brexit", by the way. whose biggest arguement for Brexit was it would allow us to inspect the colon of the US.

If only someone had warned him that in 2026 seein US shit up and close would not be considered a rare privilege.

I posted that story to tumbleweed in politics yesterday.

Worth remember that MN is to real life as the FTSE is to the economy. It is not a micorcosm of the UK.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2026 10:23

You just need to go on Scotsnet or Craicnet to realise how unrepresentative of actual reality MN is tbh.

Busy day for me as I need to fill up the planters recently ordered. The first is the herb planter, which of course will have parsley, sage rosemary and thyme.

Lining with fleece and cardboard so have to measure and cut.

Many years ago (pre 1997) , in a superbly high energy rant, John Prescott was on QT and he tore into the Tory wet dream of a purely services based economy saying that a country where everyone is trying to sell insurance to everybody else isn't a model for propserity.

The modern "tech" era has become bots selling to bots on platforms that are increasingly required to play hide the losses with a tsunami of "innovation" coupled with a heavy measure of "look over here, don't look over there".

TL;DR, there isn't enough "wealth" in the world to underwrite all the cheques being written.
