interesting thread

Thrilled that my paper (w/@sarahobolt.bsky.social,@catherinedevries.bsky.social,@simonecremaschi.bsky.social) was accepted at the American Political Science Review!

We find that declining public services fuel support for the populist right — and show why the right benefits more than other parties 🧵

He should get together with Rees-Mogg.

Llttledrummergirls · 02/04/2026 08:39

Kemi on BBC breakfast, promising unicorns (cheap energy) but nothing they would pay for it.

She's just said energy apprentices are all going to the middle East- does she pay no attention to world events?

She needs to stop talking, she just sounds stupid.

Me too, I was born in August 1969. 😀

I was just over a year old (February of 68).

The moon landing is as bold a separation of eras as the dropping of the A bomb. Or first flight.

I can just about recall it - squat on the lino watching our 20" (?) B&W TV that was tuned with spinny knobs and had 4 legs.

I can pinpoint where I was in December 1972 when DM and I went it collected DB from a neighbour. There was a full moon and DM said "There are people walking on the moon now ... maybe you can see them ?". That was the Apollo 17 mission.

SerendipityJane · 02/04/2026 10:21

Meanwhile, whisper it quietly, but the UK still does real science

I wonder if there are any real world applications for a GPS system that is immune to radio jamming ?

I wonder how the visit to the dark side of the moon squares with the MAGA/ flat earther intersection.

I love that.

BIWI · 02/04/2026 10:35

I was 10. My dad got me and my brother up to watch it on the tv - and it was also my dad's birthday, so made it feel more special!

BestIsWest · 02/04/2026 10:40

I was 6 but I don’t remember it specifically. I must have been aware of it. A much more clear memory is watching the Apollo 13 splashdown.

cardibach · 02/04/2026 10:47

MsJinks · 02/04/2026 06:33

I was 3 the first time around - I recall watching launches but not that one specifically- they all merge a bit but they were all big events and very exciting.

It did always fill me with such excitement then and still does now - imagine shooting off at speed to the vast, vast space of the universe. I have discussions with my grandson about whether it’s better to go to space or as far down in the sea as possible - I stick with space each time.

In reality I’d probably be too scared nowadays to do this, like many things (ignoring the fact I have no skills to even get there ha) - I can dream as it’s not a potential reality but sometimes I do wish for the immortality of youth quite a lot.

I’ve always been inspired by the idea of space travel too. I remember an episode of Tomorrow’s World when I was about 12 saying there would be jobs in space by the new millennium (they couldn’t predict we’d just…stop going to the moon I guess) and on the strength of that I chose to do all 3 sciences at O level to make myself employable up there.
It must be terrifying though. I went to an ‘ask the astronaut’ meet and greet at Kennedy Space Centre some years ago and someone asked whether they were scared and what went through their minds waiting for lift off. He said he wasn’t really scared because when you join the programme you make peace with it maybe killing you, but that what he always thought about was that every component, every bolt and screw, wasn’t the best that could be made, but rather the best that could be made within the budget. Terrifying.

There may not be jobs "in space", but the aerospace industries of the UK clearly show there are "jobs in space".

I know you are not allowed to have regrets, but the family situation which meant I could not take a job with a company that was part of the European Space Agency back in the 80s will be my one luxury regret. Based in Thame but monthly stays in Darmstadt to visit mission control would have been part of it.

They contacted me too - found my cv from the summer after my sandwich year when I was looking for temp work.

But today is about the future. And well done Artemis and the countless millions who made her possible. (Are we still allowed to feminise ships ?)

ETA. Can't seem to copy the full version. Which is hilarious 😂

According to Farage, it was Richard Tice who made the decision and the announcement - Tice didn't do the latter, Farage did.

Apparently the decision was made an hour ago. Jenrick, who is at the conference as well, seemed surprised at the announcement of the sacking.

Good. His remarks are disgusting.
Peter Apps' book "Show me the bodies" should be required reading for all Government officials.

PandoraSocks · 02/04/2026 11:58

Good news about Dudley.

Shatner is very funny on X.

Notonthestairs · 02/04/2026 12:08

Dudley was only appointed last month!
What on earth possessed him to speak about Grenfell like that. The loosening of regulations and fails to respond to reports contributed to those people dying.

BIossomtoes · 02/04/2026 12:22

What possesses any of them? I can only conclude that they’re so deep in their echo chamber that they’re completely out of touch with how most of us view these things.

BestIsWest · 02/04/2026 12:25

Cape Kennedy was one of the best days out I’ve ever had. I cried all the way round especially in the room where they simulate Mission Control at take off. Just astonishing to put your faith in other humans like that.

I won’t hear a word against William Shatner’s version of Common People. I reserve my judgement on the Ace of Spades.

Highly amused by my 88 year old DM this morning. Going through her mail she had a letter from Reform and had written ‘Return To Sender’ on the envelope in block caps. Even with Alzheimer’s and NPH she’s not fooled by them.
