What simple thing do you have to psych yourself up for?

For me it's going to the gym and putting on fake tan. Feel infinitely better after doing them, but for some reason both feel like insurmountable tasks until I get started.

What's yours?

Showering, even though I have to be clean and shower daily! Same with hair washing.

Any type of 'life admin' stuff. I long for the days when you called a company or went into a branch. Now everything requires an app or a portal and you can't speak to a human for love nor money....so much harder work (because we are now doing part of that companies admin for them! )

Cleaning the fish tank.

Going out socially.

Ironically I have no problem changing the king sized bed and enjoy seeing it lovely and clean knowing I'll be getting in it that night!

I’d very happily put away your clean washing, empty your dishwasher, fill your car with petrol and do all your food shopping if you will do my hoovering and dusting. I really like emptying the dishwasher! Everything back in its place and the dishwasher is empty for the next lot. And it takes about 2 minutes.

(confession- I hate cleaning so much I don’t do much at all. DH does most of it.)

Putting food shopping away.

By the time I’ve picked it off the shelf, put it in the trolley, unloaded it all at the checkout, put it all in bags as it gets scanned, loaded it into the car and unloaded it from the car, I’ve had enough of the bastard stuff.

I always used to put everything straight into bags and not load it back into the trolley at Aldi, as that meant another round of handling to put it into bags.

Scan and shop helps remove one stage from this. Until you get the dreaded trolley check…

But I agree, putting it away is one step too far after all that effort. I quite often just do the fridge and freezer stuff and come back to the rest after a break (which is just delaying it).

I used to like it when I got it delivered, then it was almost quite exciting putting it away and seeing what I’d bought.

I think my top three are
Household- mopping the floors
Beauty-dying my hair
Admin -making phonecalls

MundaneEasterBunny · 26/03/2026 06:36

Getting out of bed to face the day
Drying my hair
Ironing
Waking the kids for school - the screaming is unreal
Kids Bathtime
Dealing with finances and looking at my banking app - times are hard
My car insurance is up for renewal- shopping for that
Trying to get the kids out the house - they would happily stay in PJs all day and stay indoors.
Doing homework with my youngest - she struggles and she hates it and it’s always a battle.

Generally as I get older, necessary tasks get harder.

Taking my second set of morning medication.

I have fibromyalgia and a spinal injury. Walking is very painful for me and I can only stand up for a minute or two before the pain gets overwhelming and I have to sit back down.

The second set contains water tablets that made me need to pee every 10-15 mins for a solid 6 hours. I have to take them as otherwise I never feel the need to go and only pee 2 or 3 times a day which is causing water retention and kidney damage.

It's very hard to psych myself up to take a tablet that's going to cause me a lot of pain for several hours. But if I don't take them my left leg swells up like crazy and I can't get trousers/shoes on and if it gets really bad then skin splits and leaks fluid everywhere and I have to sit with a towel wrapped around it. But the splits don't hurt and treating it does, so I have to fight myself every day.

I let myself have a day off once or twice a week as otherwise I end up so exhausted that I sleep for 20 hours, but it's even harder to motivate myself the next day because of how much I enjoyed the break. It doesn't help that I also have ADHD and it takes me ages to be able to focus on a task so I get basically nothing done during those 6 hours due to the constant interruptions.

Cleaning out the car!

JaneBoleyn · 26/03/2026 09:36

Phone calls.

I'll do anything possible to avoid them including getting others to do it.

Weirdly, Teams is fine.
