What simple thing do you have to psych yourself up for?

For me it's going to the gym and putting on fake tan. Feel infinitely better after doing them, but for some reason both feel like insurmountable tasks until I get started.

What's yours?

Making phone calls. Especially to tradesmen to get work done on the house.

Oh god yes, this one!

And phoning my mother.

Emptying the bloody dishwasher. Absolutely no idea why that chore irks me so much but usually the deal is that DH does it and I do all the washing instead. This is an arrangement which dates back to before we had a dishwasher when I utterly despised washing up. Which I still hate just as much. I don't know why.

He's been away this weekend, I did fantastically on Friday emptying it ready to refill and cleaning the whole kitchen. I have proceeded to procrastinate endlessly about emptying it since then and the kitchen has descended into absolute madness. I tried to bribe the 7yo to empty it for me, but no dice. I hopefully tried to persuade the 4yo to help, but he wasn't having any of it either (to be absolutely fair to both of them they did a brilliant job tidying their room, the front room and wiping down tables).

I have literally just gone and finished it. There were five items left to come out of it, which I have been avoiding ALL day having emptied it in excruciatingly slow spurts causing crockery and cutlery to build up everywhere rather than just being able to go in. ARGH WHY.

I have put away all the DC's washing, swiffered the stairs and even changed the bedsheets on the ridiculously heavy mattress and washed DH's duvet that smells of sheep Grin in order to put this stupid task off.

Peony1985 · 22/03/2026 22:20

Yes to putting clothes away.
I am doing 30 day shred. I have completed 30 days but need to keep it up so I-don’t have to go back to day 1. It takes longer to psych up, than the 25 mins it takes to do the HIT workout.

I quite like filling up with petrol. I like stopping on the litre.
Grocery shopping is almost like my hobby! Now the kids have left home I swan around picking foods I actually want, whenever I feel I need it. The weekly delivery was soul destroying m.

SquirrelFan · 22/03/2026 22:26

Going to bed. Hate hate going upstairs, washing face, brushing teeth, taking medicine (stupid estradiol pessary). All sneaking around in the dark (because DH goes to bed earlier), making it much more difficult to find pjs, make sure alarm is switched on, etc. When he goes up to bed earlier I can't even look forward to reading my book before bed, which makes me procrastinate more. I am typing this to avoid going up....

Don't mind doing petrol but doing the tyres . Yes they need done and I'm glad when they are but the faff!
And catching two cats who don't want caught and shoved in travel cages

RantyRant3555 · 22/03/2026 22:30

Just at the moment a bowel cancer screening kit. Not even so much doing the screen but needing to take it to post.

Agree with work

Asking for help or letting anyone in my flat (Autistic).

abracadabra1980 · 22/03/2026 22:30

Getting up in the morning.

But a portable tyre inflator - game changer!

grizzlyoldbear · 22/03/2026 22:32

my partner coming home in a bad mood after a 12 hour shift. I literally dread it

Spendysis · 22/03/2026 22:32

Work
remaking the bed after I’ve stripped it
hoovering the stairs

OtherS · 22/03/2026 22:33

Definitely washing my hair. And going to bed. And cutting my toenails. Feel they're all much, much bigger jobs than they are.

MashThePatriarchy · 22/03/2026 22:33

Phoning my mum

DustyMaiden · 22/03/2026 22:35

Going to the lavatory will wait until I nearly wet myself. Mad but I keep doing it.

Kickinthenostalgia · 22/03/2026 22:36

Mopping floors 😭 I actually hate it but it has to be done… also unloading the dishwasher… I have no issues loading it because in that moment it’s the dishwashers problem but once it’s finished I then have to unload and then put it away 😬

canuckup · 22/03/2026 22:36

Any social engagement. I need notice

LemonPoundCake · 22/03/2026 22:38

Yes to fake tanning!

All housework.

Going to the post office (involves queuing, which I dread).

Any type of admin to do with money.

This too. Especially in winter when loo is so cold.

Stripping and remaking our bed. I’m 5’3 and we have a super king 💀

I use a hack for the cover, lay it on the duvet on the bed, then roll it up like a Swiss roll( stand in middle at bottom of bed and roll away from you) then put underside of cover over the duvet end and roll back down- magic the duvet is in the cover- needs a bit of a shake and bit of practise but I find it easier than disappearing inside the cover trying to sort it all out

Girlintheframe · 22/03/2026 22:46

Exercise, talking on the phone, cleaning the kitchen, putting away the food shop, going to work (about 50% of the time), essay writing..could go on and on!

CatPawprints · 22/03/2026 22:49

Getting into the shower
Then getting out of the shower
Then actually drying my hair with the hairdryer

Don't know what, but having a bath feels like it is much less effort

Wreckinball · 22/03/2026 22:50

House admin and hair removal on bikini line, standing still in the cold for 8 mins urgh

Manchurian42 · 22/03/2026 22:51

Washing my hair. Hate doing it.

Manchurian42 · 22/03/2026 22:51

And going to bed, alone.

BauhausOfEliott · 22/03/2026 22:53

Phone calls of any kind.

A big supermarket shop.

Posting a letter. No idea why.

Collecting a parcel from a neighbour. Or taking one round.
