What simple thing do you have to psych yourself up for?

For me it's going to the gym and putting on fake tan. Feel infinitely better after doing them, but for some reason both feel like insurmountable tasks until I get started.

What's yours?

Sooo much (I do have severe MH issues so maybe that’s why although I also need routine to manage).

  • hoovering (hate it).
  • leaving the house (manage about once a month).
  • telephone calls
  • changing bed
  • cleaning bathroom
Morepositivemum · 22/03/2026 22:55

Washing frying pans or any wooden boards, cleaning out cat litter, unclogging toilet, hoovering!

Dappy777 · 22/03/2026 22:57

Where I live is now so overcrowded that I have to psyche myself up to do anything. Going to Tesco, taking the car to the garage…pretty much everything is a horrible ordeal because there are just too many people crammed into this town.

Happyjoe · 22/03/2026 23:02

Ironing. I hate every second and put it off for weeks until the pile resembles Mount Kilimanjaro. When it's done though I feel fab with myself and have a little pat on the back and celebratory cuppa and dance.

Shopping including food shopping and clothes shopping is a special hell of it's own. Do most online but occasionally I have to go out. The only shops I like are garden centres and homesense because I like looking at all the strange stuff. The rest are an absolute chore and depress me going in, have to push myself and have been known to change my mind and drive back home again.

I can't stand washing my hair. I will put it off for a couple of days after it really needs doing. This week was great as I went to the hairdressers so that was one less wash needed.

Phone calls of any kind.

A big supermarket shop.

Posting a letter. No idea why.

Collecting a parcel from a neighbour. Or taking one round.

Yes, agree. That forced polite chit chat for a few moments when actually everyone just wants to collect/give the parcel and get on with their day.

Dooodaaaaaday · 22/03/2026 23:07

Anything involving technology, passwords, login etc . Give me a phone call anytime!

Phone calls

TheeNotoriousPIG · 22/03/2026 23:16
  1. Phone calls. Please just email/message me, because I am not always able to answer the phone, I don't always have signal, and have the phone on mute when I'm at home.
  2. Going to work if the manager is about
  3. Appointments. I rarely have them, which probably makes it worse!
  4. Dealing with the filter on the washing machine, because it is bound to flood the utility room again...
  5. Going into town at the weekends/during school holidays. It's so busy!

I do not have to worry about grocery shopping usually, because I get it delivered, and I recently hired a cleaner to help me to keep on top of the housework, so I don't put that off for weeks, either!

illsendansostotheworld · 22/03/2026 23:17

Answering the phone to certain family members!!

Britalian · 22/03/2026 23:20

Washing my hair (I find drying it so dull, but if I left it to dry naturally it would look awful)
Changing sheets: our bed is a super-king and exhausts me, and my daughter's is a PITA to make as it has a 'sunken' mattress so putting the fitted sheet on hurts when you brush the wooden side.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 22/03/2026 23:23

Hoovering
Making dinner again
seeing my dad

Disposing of half a mouse and its entrails (cat kill).

Could you leave it? Neighbours cat brought dead mouse to our garden twice. Both times I left it there and the next day it disappeared.
I call it : lets nature run its course.
Of course very different if it’s inside.

Filling E-consult form for GP surgery. I just hate it. Unfortunately I have to do it quite often as DD has health issues.

Filling up the car with petrol

JMSA · 22/03/2026 23:48

Ooh, such a good question. I’m sure there must be loads 😆
Taking off my make-up at night must surely be one. I can never be arsed and the cleanser always feels freezing on my face!

my partner coming home in a bad mood after a 12 hour shift. I literally dread it

This one leapt out at me. You poor thing - are you ok? Is the relationship worth it overall? x

mondaytosunday · 23/03/2026 00:23

Changing the bed. Especially the duvet cover. Wrestling with the fitted sheet - I even buy the next size up but I have an inaccessible corner that is a PITA. But of course I do it but hate it.
@pinkpony88I haven’t ironed in decades. My son used to iron his own school shirts. Now I don’t even own an iron (and he has discovered steaming).

day to day analysis and having a rough idea

Rubyfw5 · 23/03/2026 00:32

Same with the hair washing.

You can’t exactly leave it when it’s in your house though!!

echt · 23/03/2026 01:20

@Cryingatthegym, when I saw the title of this thread I had the same thought about going to the gym. I know I must do it to keep my early-70s body strong, but bugger me, it's a chore.

I actually said to myself: do it because you don't want to, this morning. And did.

EdinaTheConfessor · 23/03/2026 01:56

Going for a run. I get over this by either going first thing in the morning at the weekend, or by being dressed for it first thing and then going on my lunch break (wfh)

Putting a box dye on my hair. I’ve had a box sitting on the side for about 2 weeks and only just did it yesterday. I was practically half grey at this point. Managed to dye my face too which is nice and a reminder of why I hate doing it so much.

Putting clothes away. DH does all the laundry, all I have to do is put mine away but it is such a mammoth task and my wardrobes are already too full and it stresses me out.

Sometimes just having a shower. Especially at the weekend when I’ve been up for a bit before having to get ready.

Organising work on the house. We actually have a builder in now but took me 2 years to sort.

Putting the bastard clean washing away.

😑.Yes

Washing my hair

Whyplease · 23/03/2026 07:19

I spent numerous years in telephone customer service/sales roles and was very successful at the selling since I no longer do this I absolutely cannot pick the phone up I hate ringing people even people I know I can't stand the small talk and feel awkward trying to end a call.

Sometimes it's the very basics. I had a parcel in our parcel box which is a 30 walk round the side of our house I left it for five days.
