Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

There’s a lot of people on eBay doing the same - I suspect that’s part of the issue. It’s such good quality, it lasts for decades and gets sold en masse either on inheritance or when someone wants something new.

I bought one replacement plate for my mother while topping up my sets and it’s the only replacement she’s needed in over 40 years (and she only needs it because the original got dropped on stone flags when guests went outside with their plates at a party that was meant to stay indoors!).

TofuGoblin · 03/05/2026 16:44

I did contemplate keeping it, but in reality we already have a substantial set (although really need to get some replacement cereal bowls!). We're doing a car boot next week as having a huge clear out after me being the last in a family line and "inheriting" belongings from 4 relatives a couple of years back. Hoping we may be able to sell it as a full set. Also have several jugs and bits and pieces too, need to get back to rummaging through boxes...

I would put on eBay if you have the time. Hope you get a good price for it. I just googled and it's a beautiful green.
Or keep for future for you or a family member.

My order has arrived. Such beautiful, well-designed and well-made objects. I am so sorry for the loyal staff who must have been working their socks off to fill all the final orders: one can now only wish the best of luck to all of them.

metalcat · 06/05/2026 21:15

Mine arrived today, it's beautiful, some of it was seconds and it was perfect. I go Kiln Blue and Halo plates and some Halo Speckle mugs. It's such a shame and awful for the staff. I also went in John Lewis and there is still a Denby section.

metalcat · 07/05/2026 18:38

@user1471502540 I hope your husband is able to find something else soon. John Lewis had Grain, agree it is beautiful, lighter and flatter shape so easier for dishwasher.

user1471502540 · 07/05/2026 19:07

Glad you liked the Grain. Just go easy with the gravy. We are used to the large coupe plates 😂. He will find something soon I'm sure. Thanks.

ThisOliveHelper · 07/05/2026 19:13

Does anyone have denby halo speckle? Is this a good set to buy? Bit worried as reviews suggest it chips easily

Snowwhitesnow · 07/05/2026 19:23

I have halo speckle. It’s fine. What are people doing to chip it so much.

Secretseverywhere · 07/05/2026 19:38

My enamelled cast iron pans are denby. I took advantage of a sale and triple clubcard points so they were essentially free (with £50 worth of points) they’ve been going for a decade and are still in great condition.

mondaytosunday · 07/05/2026 19:42

Everyone I know seems to have had that blue Denby set as wedding registry china (I’m 64 so 80s weddings). I have never particularly liked anything the brand sells and get my dinnerware from Tesco or Sainsbury’s. You can’t beat a service for four for £25, though my latest I paid twice that as it’s so lovely, but bet Denby is £££ more again.

Snowwhitesnow · 07/05/2026 20:43

Yes well China don’t have net zero and expensive energy costs and I don’t think they pay minimum wages either. So that will explain the cost difference!

Snowwhitesnow · 07/05/2026 20:47

But no one is demanding people buy, just hoping people will support British jobs.
If you don’t want to or like it that’s fine!

Snowwhitesnow · 07/05/2026 21:10

Just looked at the Grain collection on John Lewis. That looks amazing.
Very modern.
I have imperial blue. But I have blue haze , kiln and halo, everything matches perfectly. But I will check out John Lewis tomorrow to look at the natural colour.

Crispynoodle · 07/05/2026 21:21

I have 6 places of Azure and 6 of pure white. I love it because it really is indestructible no scratches or anything it lasts a lifetime

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/05/2026 21:25

No, because Denby is way out of my budget.

I’ll stick with my Asda crockery.

Snowwhitesnow · 07/05/2026 22:11

Why so many people coming on to say they aren’t buying! I thought this was a support thread!

I got ALL mine (4 setting dinner service, wine glasses, tumbers, 3 coffee mugs, 2 smaller mugs and a sauté pan) from Tesco vouchers. Most just before they stopped the 3x offer and the rest with 2x - plus special offers from the Denby site.

Marmalademorning · 08/05/2026 21:56

Ordered some pieces to go with my existing set. I did look on EBay first but it’s cheaper on the actual Denby website in the sale. Eg I bought 2 mugs for just over £30. On EBay it would have cost me around £45

I don’t really shop at Tesco much, only now and again, I tend to get any homeware things from Asda.

I’m not much bothered about having fancy and expensive dinner sets and things anyway, it’s just DD and me here, now and then DD1 comes over and also my friend sometimes, cheap and cheerful does us fine! 😂

The thread title is asking if people have bought any.

This is talking about how other brands had been saved by other manufacturing companies.

The answer might lie in the industrial salvage model perfected by British design and manufacturing company Original BTC. They have mastered the art of stepping in to rescue endangered icons, not by stripping them for parts, but by preserving the physical infrastructure of the craft. When English Antique Glass faced closure in 2015, O.BTC didn’t just buy the logo; they saved the furnaces. They have just done the same with The Caverswall English China Company, acquired through its Stoke-on-Trent subsidiary, Staffordshire Heritage Fine China.

What does the end of Denby Pottery mean for the future of British heritage brands?

It has been the backbone of the British cupboard for over two centuries, but now the Stoke-on-Trent institution serves as a cautionary tale for other craft-based brands
