Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

I'm not surprised, it's pretty old-fashioned looking and expensive for what it is. You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Londonnight · 22/03/2026 06:44

Most of the potteries are under threat. Denby is very expensive and I wouldn't buy it.

MyThreeWords · 22/03/2026 06:44

I hadn't realised it was all still British made. Recently when I have tried to find something I want to buy, it has seemed that all their products are so bland and characterless that they could easily have been made in some massively automated plant in China.

I'll certainly make an effort to buy something from them now (via my Tesco's loyalty points, which you can use at Denby online) but I really wish they would get better designers and come up with products that have more of an artisanal feel.

I have a lovely old Denby milk jug from the 70s that is my favourite bit of crockery in the house. But nothing from Denby comes close to it now.

I already have a huge set of Imperial Blue, built up over 20+ years, so don't really need more (I added 4 place settings to it at Christmas 2024 as well).

I'm not sure what PP means by old fashioned looking, but then I'm not into crockery fashion!

Queenofthebrae · 22/03/2026 06:58

I absolutely love my Denby set, I’ve enjoyed adding to it over time. I’ve had it close to 20 years and in all that time I’ve only chipped one cup! That’s with almost daily use. It’s so well made and sturdy. It would be gutting to see another British brand close.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/03/2026 07:05

It might be expensive but my Denby crockery is the only stuff I have ever had that hasn't chipped at all. I've only broken one plate and that was dropped on a tiled floor. I don't think it's old fashioned at all.

Old fashioned is good IMO, when it comes to dinner services. I’m not a fan of Denby, though. I eat off Wedgwood.

PersephoneParlormaid · 22/03/2026 07:07

We got some lovely Denby mugs as a wedding present back in the 90’s. Unfortunately the handles all came off one after the other. It’s not something I’d buy again.

Whiskeyandkittens · 22/03/2026 07:09

DH worked there over 10 years ago and it was in administration then so I was a bit surprised it was still going!
Our garlic press from the shop there is the best bit of kit in our kitchen.

bugalugs45 · 22/03/2026 07:10

I’ve had Denby since I left home , 25 years ago, my current pattern is deleted now but I still use it daily .
It’s definitely not old fashioned , in my opinion anyway 😊

MrsLizzieDarcy · 22/03/2026 07:12

I'm a bit sad as we've got the coupe dinner plates (18 of them) in the studio and haze speckle patterns, there's only a slight bit of damage to one of them and that's underneath. We've also got the side plates and cereal bowls. I'm tempted to get some spares while they are still trading.

The only downside is that the weight of it all was too much for our deep drawer and I've had to put them into a cupboard instead.

ZenNudist · 22/03/2026 07:13

We have Denby. I like it. The pattern we had is not very hard wearing and chipped badly. We have a lot of it. Have been known to buy secondhand to get more. I expect they can sell the name and continue to produce with cheaper manufacturing.

MaryBeardsShoes · 22/03/2026 07:16

Your title is annoying. Have I bought some? No, because I don’t have the spare cash to splurge on something I don’t need and also it’s not my responsibility to save every British brand that collapses.

Sorry, probably missing the point but I’m cranky!

GloiredeDijon · 22/03/2026 07:16

My crockery is entirely Denby in Linen. Mugs too.

The quality is fabulous and there is no comparison to a supermarket set as suggested by a previous poster.

About 30 years old and still perfect. A classic pattern which never ages and I still love it.

I would be sad to think they will go out of business.

Stesha7 · 22/03/2026 07:19

We once had a set of Denby plates, bowls and mugs handed down from my MIL. Lovely stuff, it also seemed to be totally indestructible. It all survived my babies and toddlers throwing/dropping them loads of times. We’ve passed it onto someone else now as I felt bad that such lovely crockery was getting dropped so regularly but they’ve said I can have it back from them when I no longer have toddlers 😅

FruAashild · 22/03/2026 07:19

Every supermarhet sells Denby style crockery these days but Denby is British made by workers who will be treated a lot better than the potters in Chinese factories and it's an important part of British history. We have been using the same Denby set we got as wedding presents every day for the last 26 years, I still love it. Can't say we haven't broken and chipped some pieces over the years but we could easily buy new pieces from Denby until the design was discontinued and now get replacements from the china search website. Can't do that with supermarket crockery.

sorrynotathome · 22/03/2026 07:19

I love Denby and have quite a bit, however they are classic and extremely durable, and I’m not going to start buying stuff I don’t need. Overconsumption has caused many of the massive problems we have today.

milveycrohn · 22/03/2026 07:20

My DS asked for some at Xmas. Soooo expensive. (before this latest news)
The problem there was that I then had to spend more on my other DC to match the expense!

SeriousFaffing · 22/03/2026 07:20

Thank you so much for sharing this. Denby is a heritage brand and we should be supporting something good while we still have it.

Really frustrates me to see the supermarkets and discount brands blatantly ripping off Denby’s designs.

Cosleepingadvice · 22/03/2026 07:23

We were given a Denby set for a wedding present. A couple of the cup handles have been broken (multiple use every day for nearly 10yrs). I must buy replacements before the set is not available anymore.

My mum got me started with my collection. She didn't buy much, I have to say!

Jellycatrabbit · 22/03/2026 07:27

I agree, our Denby is so well made that we've only chipped a couple of bowls over 24 years of daily use. My sister has been through about 10 sets of crockery over the same time.

I don't like the style and shape of the mugs though so they sit in the cupboard collecting spiders.

I recently (about 2 years ago!) added the pasta bowls to my set and we really like them, perhaps we need another 4 as we have 8 of everything else . . .

Sorry that was the AI title suggested by the site which I tried for the first time - won’t do that again, sorry!

TBH I'm not surprised.
Its so expensive compared to imported stuff. For years it was a staple on wedding lists, in all the big department shops, but few people are doing those sorts of lists.

And even fewer will have "good" crockery as well as every day stuff.
We have denby that gets pulled out at Christmas and everyday stuff.

If i was starting again I don't think id bother. People aren't entertaining at home the way they used to. When we have friends round its either BBQ or takeaway.
The denby isn't getting hauled out for either.

TofuGoblin · 22/03/2026 07:31

Oh man do I need to panic buy the pieces of my set I need to replace?!
