Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.
https://www.denbypottery.com/pages/save-denby?_gl=113xe0u1upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhobLsPGykwMVbpBQBh2sNhibEAAYASABEgJiavD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAAD88OOOIrq_FVCUS-mNNXnw6tUk
had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

We have my grandma’s full set. It’s fab! Heavy but indestructible. I wonder if the success of product is leading to its collapse. We have no need to buy from them but really appreciate their wares.

I'm not surprised, it's pretty old-fashioned looking and expensive for what it is. You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Edited

People who want to buy good and buy once. People who don't want disposable, cheap dinner sets.

OrdinarySloth · 22/03/2026 08:01

That’s a shame. We went with Denby because it has the same styles all the time so easy to replace bits if they break. I imagine most of their customers are the same, which means they’re not buying new pieces often (especially if they’re older than us and have built up a large collection already).

Ours is used every day and we haven’t had to replace any yet, nor has any broken.

No i haven't and I won't be. If companies are no longer offering what consumers want then they must adapt or die. They'll aren't owed anything.

Superhansrantowindsor · 22/03/2026 08:06

Houses are smaller. It’s hard to have the room for a posh set in addition to an everyday set.
Interesting that a lot of posters are saying they got it years ago. the difference now is couples are having to spend so much more on rent and mortgage, proportionate to their income that they just get a cheap set from a supermarket or IKEA.
It will be sad to see it go and job losses are horrible but I can see why they are struggling.

Most people now don't have the space or money for a fancy dinner set, they're living in smaller homes or shared places where it's not practical, if they have people round to eat it's much less formal, or they're moving between rentals yearly and don't want the extra risk of something expensive being broken. "Wedding china" doesn't seem to be much of a thing now.

My friend still has the dinner set she bought from a French supermarket nearly 30 years ago.

Yes heaven forfend that we make anything in the UK any more when we can import straight from China. Quite a lot of those "lovely" supermarket dinner sets are Denby knock offs btw

RosesAndHellebores · 22/03/2026 08:09

I had the full set of Denby memories, started in 1982. It was indestructible but the most used items (dinner/side plates/bowls) got scratched over time. It was worn and dated when we moved in 2013 and I replaced it. Still have butter dish and a milk jug.

@Stopsnowing people might top up existing sets but nobody will start a new one because if it goes into administration it won't be possible to add to/replace bits.

TBF when we moved, I looked at Denby but recall it felt heavy and a bit dated so I went with Wedgewood White.

Branster · 22/03/2026 08:09

Those saying you can just get much cheaper from supermarkets’ own brand
The quality doesn’t compare. Denby is a proper workhorse. Very substantial and incredibly long lasting with daily use.

OrdinarySloth · 22/03/2026 08:10

People keep saying “you could go through ten supermarket sets for the price of Denby”. Maybe that’s true, but the environmental cost of that is appalling. Obviously if you can’t afford Denby then you have no choice, but if you can then I think choosing the supermarket options is as bad as buying fast fashion from Shein or Temu (both environmentally and in terms of how the workers will be treated).

The “people don’t have space for it” is a weird argument as well. No, people these days don’t have room for fancy occasion china. But there’s no reason Denby can’t be used as everyday crockery. It’s what we do, and what the others we know with Denby do.

The problem is that we all want more things made in the UK, but are unwilling or unable to pay the costs associated with that.

The Denby was my every day set!

Piggywaspushed · 22/03/2026 08:13

The only mugs I will drink tea out of are blue footed Denby mugs. But they discontinued the ones that are blue inside years ago so I got mine from Ebay which won't help Denby. Tea really does taste stronger in my Denby mugs!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/03/2026 08:13

My folks had a full set of Green Wheat - probably bought in the very early 70s. Bits of it are still going - used by a dd as spares.

I still like that design,

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 22/03/2026 08:13

I've just bought a meat platter using my Tesco vouchers so just paid for postage. They have a big sale on so worth looking if you have vouchers.

Mistymagic77 · 22/03/2026 08:14

Gutted. Recently invested in a new set - white speckle after having the same set I’d built up since my 20s. Have boxed all the old set away as still in great condition. 😞

ChubbyPuffling · 22/03/2026 08:15

Victims of their own success I guess, we had our wedding china in "Greenwich" in 1999 .

Apart from adding pasta bowls and a salad bowl, we have not needed to buy any more. Not broken/chipped anything , the only plates/bowls/mugs/teapot/sugarbowl, cream jug, milk jug/salt+pepper/casserole/meat plate&gravy boat/serving plates& bowls that we have, so has been in daily use for 26 years.

TiredCatLady · 22/03/2026 08:15

Denby stuff is fantastic - virtually indestructible. My MIL has a set that’s nigh on 50 years old, used everyday and still chip free (despite my other half’s best efforts). Those saying it’s expensive compared to the “nice dinner sets in supermarkets”, the latter are literally throwaway crap quality.
I had a John Lewis set bought at the start of covid which chipped within months and went in the bin by the end of 2024 with several pieces missing and all but two cups horribly chipped. That was £60 down the drain. The £25 Tesco ones don’t last a year.
I now have a Denby set (saved up for it) and it’s my everyday set. I’ll probably buy some spares as I’d be utterly gutted if they went under.

youngestisapsycho · 22/03/2026 08:17

50% sale on some stuff at the moment

Thisismyalterego · 22/03/2026 08:17

I confess, I am not a fan of the cricket, but their saucepans and oven tins are amazing. I've been using my Tesco vouchers to build up a complete set of both over the last few years. I'll definitely be looking to see if there's anything else I need from those ranges.

HortiGal · 22/03/2026 08:18

They do have a good sale on, but tbf in this climate not many are spending £200+ on a dinner set or £20 on a mug.

Sorry that was the AI title suggested by the site which I tried for the first time - won’t do that again, sorry!

Oh dont apologise to some arsehole moaning about thread titles, they can get over themselves

I absolutely would do this sort of thing but a couple of years ago bought all new crockery from Spode, so keeping it still in the UK I hope

Im going to look on their website.

I was going to say I’ve got my mum’s set of Green Wheat. Goes in the dishwasher, hasn’t faded.

I have a few items from Denby and was hoping to add to them over time from the same range. Now wondering if I just need to go buy all the things I want now, or if it's not worth bothering. Part of the appeal was that if I dropped an item, I could easily get a replacement but that might not be the case in the future. Even if they get through this, they might reduce the range

Might as well take a look at their Easter sale?

Spookyspaghetti · 22/03/2026 08:23

I love Denby. Their stuff is incredibly good quality and I only ever get compliments on it. I do prefer the older sets to the current ones as they are a bit more detailed and colourful. I will have to have a look and get something next pay day.

We have about a million mugs in our house but the only ones my DH will drink out of are the two Denby ones. I thInk they are ‘pavilion’ from the heritage line.
