Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

I love my denby set, I have bought quite a lot using my Tesco club card vouchers over the past 10 years, still adding to it. Agree with what some PPs are saying, it is very expensive and pottery just as nice can bought from the high street. Maybe denby need to review their pricing as I would not have got it without the free vouchers.

dottiedodah · 22/03/2026 08:44

I had a 4 place dinner set .Alas seem to have broken most of it! M and S have some lovely cereal bowls at £6.00 .similar to Denby £13.80 and £10.80 even reduced price . I bought a couple recently .The price, and the fact of less Dinner parties at home .mean they are another casualty of British manufacturing

It previously went into Administration in 2009 and was bought out by Hilco.

I was in their outlet store last week and chatting to the assistant. She said the hardest decision you have to make with Denby is initially choosing the colour/ style because once you’ve started buying it you’re committed, knowing that it will never wear out or date. I started buying ours after seeing how indestructible MIL’s set is, and will genuinely be gutted if they do go under.

My friend bought lots of plates and bowls last year but didn't buy a matching set ,she bought lots of mismatched ice cream colors and is have never have thought of that but it looks fantastic.

I got married over 20 years ago. Still have my denby plates and bowls which were a wedding present. Only one mug has survived. Dropped the rest.

I have a few items from Denby and was hoping to add to them over time from the same range. Now wondering if I just need to go buy all the things I want now, or if it's not worth bothering. Part of the appeal was that if I dropped an item, I could easily get a replacement but that might not be the case in the future. Even if they get through this, they might reduce the range

If you get one of the classic ranges, like Imperial Blue or Greenwich Green, I imagine that you'll be able to find spares of these second hand for a long time. There's a booming second hand market (I bought some side plates recently as DH smashed one somehow). The newer / less popular patterns, maybe not as readily.

Appleandcidergravy · 22/03/2026 08:48

So we have a denby set. I bought it with my wages from my first job. I have fire chilli, and love the terracotta. However it got discontinued- otherwise I would add some more to our collection!!! Would love a jug. I even bought a terracotta melamine set of something similar for kids to eat off!!!

Gardenalia · 22/03/2026 08:49

I’m not buying any more as I have loads, but my Denby Midnight dinner plates are incredible - 37 years of daily use in a house with stone floors and toddlers (a while back now) and not a chip on them. I also still have a full set of Imperial Blue plates and bowls after 10 years of hard use. Not a chip in sight. The quality is not comparable in the slightest to supermarket stoneware.

That said, a long-term investment in highly priced goods like this has to be easy on the eye as well as truly functional. I’m not sure the speckly stuff my DC all have is quite as beautiful, but I’m undoubtedly biased!

Hotpants123 · 22/03/2026 08:51

Have had my Denby for 27 years and still going strong. Excellent quality and durability. Have replaced very little, one pasta bowl has a chip in it. It still is lovely.

BananaSkinShoes · 22/03/2026 08:52

Have I bought pottery I dislike to support Denby? Er, that’ll be a no. 🥴

autumnboys · 22/03/2026 08:55

Thanks to the poster who reminded that they’re a Clubcard partner, I will have a look and see what we need. We had a set of Imperial Blue when we got married in 1999 and it has been our only crockery set, surviving two house moves, three kids and the dishwasher with minimal casualties. My Mum also has Imperial Blue, she bought it for their 25th wedding anniversary, over 30 years ago.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2026 08:55

I notice most of the Denby havers in here are talking about sets rather than doing it piecemeal, which says something.

I started with 2 each of tea plate, side plate, bowl and dinner plate. I've added to it over 20+ years.

likelysuspect · 22/03/2026 08:56

Looking at their collections I didnt realise that much of what Ive bought in the past is copies of what they do

My first crockery set in the 90s was from BHS and looking now, its Blue Linen. It was a lovely set, not exactly like theirs of course

Recently I bought some plates in Asda, little side plates and they're essentially knock offs of their art deco plates that I can see on there now.

Have bought some to support them? Are they a charity? No thought not, they’re business. Family made millions. I’m not against people making money, we need entrepreneurs - what we do t need is people who take the money and avoid tax. In the past I’ve liked their stuff but do think it’s overpriced and you can get lovely crockery from elsewhere. The fact is that governments have not supported local industry and encouraged buying hideous amounts of stuff made elsewhere.

So no I won’t be buying.

1994 - Denby directors achieved a massive profit, with four directors turning a 160,00k investment into a 13 million return before a 40 million flotation

2009 - investment from Hilco

2017 - the owner Hilco used an Isle of Man offshore company to hold the pottery, aiming to reduce tax liabilities.

IsThisTheReaLife · 22/03/2026 08:58

I inherited a denby green wheat baking dish from my grand parents about 20 years ago. It was used by them too. I used and abused it and it finally cracked last year. Their plates are alao indestructable.

They are an investment because they last a lifetime.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/03/2026 09:01

Way out of my budget, I won’t be buying any.

Nosejobnelly · 22/03/2026 09:04

Oh no! We have loads of Denby, still going strong after nearly 26 years of marriage! I’m eating breakfast off it now. Some of it has chipped but I think it’s pretty impressive as it gets used daily for every meal.
we’ve got some white JL crockery we use for ‘best’ when people come round as it does look ‘better’ because it’s new. I def won’t be buying g new Denby as we have enough crockery now and no room for anything else!
As an aside our nearly 26-year old JL stainless steel saucepans are still being used daily!

No, there's me too. Started with my first plate in my 20s and built a set over the next 15 years. I thought thats how everyone did it, certainly common amongst my Denby owning contemporaries

I had the full set of Denby memories, started in 1982. It was indestructible but the most used items (dinner/side plates/bowls) got scratched over time. It was worn and dated when we moved in 2013 and I replaced it. Still have butter dish and a milk jug.

@Stopsnowing people might top up existing sets but nobody will start a new one because if it goes into administration it won't be possible to add to/replace bits.

TBF when we moved, I looked at Denby but recall it felt heavy and a bit dated so I went with Wedgewood White.

I stand corrected. I have checked. It's Denby White. Purchased 2013 with a few bits added. It's much lighter than the old Denby Memories but clearly indestructible as I haven't replaced anything for years.

I have dinner plates, salad plates, side plates, cereal bowls, pasta bowls, a couple of serving dishes and a cream jug. I will have bought it in the sale - probably over two to three.

@Stopsnowing I shall have a look in the shops and stock up.

Lilym4y · 22/03/2026 09:10

My friends mum had the Denby imperial blue set. I loved the shape of the mugs and when we married I wanted to get some. However the price was beyond my means. I have retired in the last few years and have treated myself to the elements blue set. I heard the news that they are in trouble and have just ordered the pasta bowls and mug set through Very website. Such a shame if the fold.

It does look lovely but can't justify the cost. I still have a couple of plates I bought in ikea when I was a student as well so I don't buy the longevity claims either (I'm nearly 40) I've bought a total of two dinner sets in my life so far and only bought the second one because the kids kept dropping things (both for less than £30)

Edited

There with you.
Even on sale the prices are quite something. I had 10+ year old ikea and asda bowls.
Had rinkit chinese made set for 9+ years with only one chip... And that one was use knside and outside.
The only reason i sold them was because of a difficult move.

Some people make it sound like nothing but Denby ever lasts.

Bunnycat101 · 22/03/2026 09:12

We’ve got a full set of denby for everyday - thing is we definitely don’t need any more crockery and won’t have any need to basically ever buy any again. I think the problem is that there are only so many plates you actually need. I also have a really fancy set that is basically used at Christmas that mainly came via our wedding gift list. It is beautiful but can’t go in the dishwasher and takes up loads of space. I wouldn’t encourage my children to do the same thing re gift lists. So.. in general I’d imagine the demand has really reduced.
