Denby pottery under threat, have you bought some to support them?

My mum had Denby and it was indestructible. But now I hear they are under threat and have put out an SOS.

had assumed they would be around for ever but have now treated myself to a set that I was planning to get way in the future after I had the kitchen redone.

£190 for a 12-piece dining set that looks like something you'd pick up in Asda. No thanks.

I love Denby. Their stuff is incredibly good quality and I only ever get compliments on it. I do prefer the older sets to the current ones as they are a bit more detailed and colourful. I will have to have a look and get something next pay day.

We have about a million mugs in our house but the only ones my DH will drink out of are the two Denby ones. I thInk they are ‘pavilion’ from the heritage line.

I do like to hear of a fellow mug purist!

I cried when I broke one.

Anneta · 22/03/2026 09:14

I love my Denby crockery and have bought many starter sets as wedding gifts for family. The company have a 10 year warranty on their crockery and I have had several pieces replaced free of charge by customer services if they have chipped during general use, as opposed to accidentally dropping the item.

My parents had a complete set, everything you could think of, in dark blue. It must’ve been 30 years old, but it was like new.

When they died and I was clearing their house, I gave a lot to the local Oxfam shop, so hopefully someone got a bargain.

Daftypants · 22/03/2026 09:16

I have 2 beautiful Denby mugs bought from a small independent retailer not too far from where I live right now .
Saw them and thought how lovely they were and how nice they’d look in our kitchen.
Many years ago we built up a good quality dinner set bit by bit and replaced items family accidentally broke / chipped ( not Denby )
I have too much of that to justify buying us an entire set of Denby 😕 but I’d like to .

saraclara · 22/03/2026 09:16

I grew up with Imperial blue in the 1960s. We lived not far from the factory and my mum had a huge collection of it that was our day to day crockery. My late husband and I had a different set (the name escapeds me now) that was our main set for decades.

But I have to say that my tastes have changed. I like slightly less chunky crockery now. I prefer drinking out of more delicate mugs and my day to day plates are white porcelain from Sainsbury's. The Denby only comes out for big family meals.

The Denby cast iron casseroles are the business though. I love mine and consider it better than le creuset. The interior certainly cleans up better.

I think you're the first!

When people talk about sets though, they're not necessarily saying it all came in one go, they're going to write a post detailing each and every little cup they bought!

Rad1ogoogoo · 22/03/2026 09:19

Thanks for link - I've just bought a few dinner plates for everyday. I already have 'Flavours' but that's been discontinued for a while, I think - it really is incredibly hard-wearing so haven't been able to add to it, but I'm not that fussed now about matching 😆

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 22/03/2026 06:41

I'm not surprised, it's pretty old-fashioned looking and expensive for what it is. You can get lovely dinner sets in most supermarkets now, so who is going to shell out for Denby?!

Edited

I'll happily pay for Denby because I value quality from a British company. I won't purchase anything mass produced from supermarkets.

Everybodys · 22/03/2026 09:19

Hallamule · 22/03/2026 09:05

No, there's me too. Started with my first plate in my 20s and built a set over the next 15 years. I thought thats how everyone did it, certainly common amongst my Denby owning contemporaries

The numbers are climbing! Though the thread is still very much tilted towards the full setters, of course. I think we're about 7:2 now.

What did you do in the meantime, buy cheapo ones/get given stuff and get rid of them as you could afford new Denby, or are any second hand? I suppose you must not have cared about matching the two types.

GloiredeDijon · 22/03/2026 07:16

My crockery is entirely Denby in Linen. Mugs too.

The quality is fabulous and there is no comparison to a supermarket set as suggested by a previous poster.

About 30 years old and still perfect. A classic pattern which never ages and I still love it.

I would be sad to think they will go out of business.

Me too!

Not a crack or chip after 20 years. Maybe that's the problem. It lasts a lifetime, so limited re purchases!!

Alpacajigsaw · 22/03/2026 09:20

Oh that’s a shame I used to work in Debenhams china department as a student and we sold loads of Denby. I must admit I always thought it was too expensive for an every day set but not fine enough for a nice dinner set - when we got married I went for Wedgwood.

CortieTat · 22/03/2026 09:21

I’m always keen to buy cast iron and most of the things I buy are made in Europe or Japan, so I’m definitely the target group but they don’t ship to my country so 🤷‍♀️

I see this quite often with British businesses, going into administration and woe is me seem to be more attractive than fixing overseas shipping.

Most people now don't have the space or money for a fancy dinner set, they're living in smaller homes or shared places where it's not practical, if they have people round to eat it's much less formal, or they're moving between rentals yearly and don't want the extra risk of something expensive being broken. "Wedding china" doesn't seem to be much of a thing now.

My friend still has the dinner set she bought from a French supermarket nearly 30 years ago.

I don’t consider Denby a fancy dinner set, it’s hardy stoneware perfect for every day use. I have 30 year old Denby that’s in use daily, has survived house moves, kids, a tiled kitchen floor and is still beautiful.

I’d pay again for good quality crockery that is durable. I don’t want to change my dinner service every few years, the environmental impact alone makes that impractical.

MaryBeardsShoes · 22/03/2026 07:16

Your title is annoying. Have I bought some? No, because I don’t have the spare cash to splurge on something I don’t need and also it’s not my responsibility to save every British brand that collapses.

Sorry, probably missing the point but I’m cranky!

It’s a quote from the website

OneBadKitty · 22/03/2026 09:25

Denby is a classic brand. It's very durable- I've had my set for almost 25 years and in that time have only lost 1 cup and 2 bowls (I exploded one heating it in the microwave just this week so lesson learned- don't use your microwave to warm your empty crockery!). The oven is fine though...

Everybodys · 22/03/2026 09:25

likelysuspect · 22/03/2026 09:18

When people talk about sets though, they're not necessarily saying it all came in one go, they're going to write a post detailing each and every little cup they bought!

The posts I'm referring to are. We've had multiple mentions of people getting given sets for weddings and inheriting full sets. Also people talking about what they've bought to replace existing parts of sets.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 22/03/2026 09:29

Yikes, that’s really expensive. In a CoL crisis, I’m not surprised that people aren’t buying their products. You can buy really nice crockery in Dunelm Mill or Sainsbury’s for way less than that. Ok, it’s not pottery but people can’t spend what they don’t have 🤷‍♀️

AnotherRandomThreeWords · 22/03/2026 09:29

We went round the Royal Worcester museum some years ago, looked in the shop, and everything seemed to be made in China. Turned out they stopped manufacturing here in 2008. I think I'll buy some Denby.

Blixem · 22/03/2026 09:30

I've had my Denby set since for nearly 20 years. I've built it up slowly and yes it is expensive but I'll never have to replace it, apart from the occasional broken piece. Before that I had a set from M&S that lasted about 2 years before the plates were all chipped. It'll be really sad if they don't manage to save the company.

Carriemac · 22/03/2026 09:31

I’ve just ordered a lasagne dish . The potteries are a great place to visit , especially Wedgwood

Miranda65 · 22/03/2026 09:32

I love Denby, but am on only my second set in 35 years! The problem they have is that it's pretty much indestructible, so no need to replace.
It's also quite neutral in design, so I don't see how it can be called old-fashioned.
I am tempted to buy something new tbh, as I'd hate to see them go.

OpheliaNightingale · 22/03/2026 09:33

@StopsnowingI suppose making it indescribable isn’t the best business model if you stop and think about it!
