I drink at least 6 cuppa’s a day
how do you take your cuppa

Its cup of tea

Ahhh just ahhh

When people on MN say, “willowy” (usually describing their teeny tiny petite daughters)
Another one is their children are 6ft9 “hollow legged” and describing their husband having an “outing hobby” which its likely not to be.

Edited

Hollow legged?

They should just say “My six feet nine daughter can drink you under the table.”

I never really understand why people shorten something that already doesn’t take long to say…”cup of tea” is hardly an essay.
I have only ever heard the existence of “Spag Bowl” on Mumsnet, but if I did hear it in real life it would set my teeth on edge.

I live somewhere where nobody calls them jacket potato/spud (it’s baked potato here) and I miss hearing it even though it’s been forty years.

It’s baked potato here and jacket potato always makes me think of potatoes in a leather jacket or trench coat 🧥

I find it especially jarring when they drop the word potato altogether.

”what are you having for tea?”

”jacket with beans” Confused

Surely it’s a café?

I think that’s the point, is it not?

A cafè is different from a “caff”. A caff is like a greasy spoon and does indeed rhyme with riff raff.

ThisSunnyBee · 21/03/2026 10:59

A cheeky wine 🤢

A Mumsnet favourite that I hate relates to cooking. If someone is complaining about cooking being a hassle, posters will say “What’s difficult about it? Just throw some pasta in a pan, chuck in some tomatoes, whack in some fresh herbs - delicious, takes 5 minutes, and we eat it with slabs of crusty bread that DH makes in the bread maker”. They’re trying to create an image of a carefree effortless “Mediterranean cookery programme” experience. In reality cooking is drudgery for most people, and those kinds of posts just make us feel even more guilty for serving fish fingers again!!

Edited

It's always crusty bread

footballmadboys · 21/03/2026 11:03

I was literally thinking this yesterday 😂 it gives me such an ick!!!!

I'm very fortunate in that I really like cooking and, perhaps more importantly, have the time to do it, but even I wouldn't downplay the time and effort involved and find all the "bunging", "popping" and "throwing in" irritating.

I have a Jamie Oliver cookbook and there is a lot of whacking and chucking. The best one though is when he's talking about making a casserole and says "go in with the potatoes". Conjures a vision of me climbing into the casserole pot to be with my potatoes 🤣

JaneIves · 21/03/2026 11:10

I nearly disowned a friend recently after a post across her SM pages - the obligatory boomerang pic, captioned with “cheeky coupla spicy margs! Ching Ching!”

🤢

history505 · 21/03/2026 11:20

‘Tasty’ is also on my hate list.

As is ‘gawjus’.

DeanElderberry · 21/03/2026 11:34

'crispy'

Also
Plate up

I think you mean serve?

Not if you work in a restaurant, it’s ’plate Up’

I quite like cooking (sometimes) but I absolutely refuse to clean up the mess that would certainly be created around the kitchen if I were to start throwing/chucking/whacking things into pans.

I don't have good aim, so I prefer to put or place things into pans. Occasionally tipping.

Labelledelune · 21/03/2026 11:45

When ordering their meal:-
’can I grab’ 🤮 or ‘I’ll take the’ both make me cringe. A simple short ‘I’d like’ is quite sufficient.
also the word texted it’s wrong, I don’t care if they say it even on the news, it’s wrong. I text, you text, we all text.

I really dislike the phrase 'hating on', where just 'hating' would do.

OMG me too!

It's up there with 'My evening was chill'.

What happened to chillED??

Crusty bread is also an expression that should be banned.

Poachedeggs1 · 21/03/2026 12:02

Cuppa, brew, jacket spud, lush all make me shudder. It’s hard to even type this as it bothers me that much, but a local cafe refers to their breakfast sandwich as a “sando”. 🤮 Even worse is avo sando or eggs and avo.

My colleague who is polish but has lived in Liverpool for the past 20 years says "Do you want to grab a scran?" when he means go out for a meal. Sad

Scran is also a geordie word for food. Though do you want to go for some scran would be the normal way of using it. Your polish mate seems to be grabbing a food. I wonder which one.

begonefoulclutter · 21/03/2026 12:11

My pet hates:

'Piece' when in relation to an item of clothing.

'Gifting' in relation to anything at all.

'Football Feast' - inevitable sign in the supermarket pizza, crisps and lager aisles come some big competition.

'Holibobs' - cringeworthy.

'Minibeasts' in relation to our small insect, crustacean and arachnid wildlife companions. It is truly infantile. Stop it.

'Mac 'n' cheese' is just unnecessary. Syllables are there for a reason.

'Barbie' when said by anyone who isn't Australian.

Borborygmus · 21/03/2026 12:19

Shodan · 21/03/2026 08:35

Roasties, yorkies and 'all the trimmings'. I don't know why - perhaps they've been overused.

See also : bubbles or fizz for champagne or prosecco.

And, strangely -'enjoy'. As in 'you can enjoy a cup of tea in the tearoom.' Or 'Enjoy the log fire'. It feels...dictatorial, maybe?

Having said that, in this house we have 'spag bog' for dinner sometimes, so what do I know.

(And yes it's bog, not bol. Bol is for amateurs.😁)

Yep, we've always referred to it as 'spag bog' too.

One of my friends still uses the term "chillax" which I think became obsolete some years back , she's certainly the only one I ever hear say it now.😆😆

I loathe the words cool and awesome to describe just about anything. It's especially rage inducing when it's people over the age of 25 saying it.

Tarkan · 21/03/2026 13:08

It’s a cuppy where I am. 😁

One I hate is dippy egg. Soft-boiled egg or just say egg and soldiers because if you have soldiers you know they’re for a soft yolk. The word “dippy” just makes me think of Right Said Fred and I hate when that song gets stuck in my head. 🙈

teawamutu · 21/03/2026 13:25

I had to fight down my loathing of the word to post here agreeing with you, OP.

Hate it hate it hate it.

Although an apostrophe can indicate a missing letter or letters so cuppa's (being short for cups of tea) may not be 100% wrong.
