What song gets you every time

For me it’s Bryan Adams - “Heaven.” It has such a powerful tug on my heart and soul. It says something profound. It’s so intimate and musically simple but beautifully composed. It feels raw somehow.

I have always loved it, will always love it. Never get tired of listening to it and feel the same deep pulls of profound emotion when I hear it.

What song has this effect on you?

Seven Spanish angels by Willie Nelson - sang it to my baby in NICU

Fast Car - Tracey Chapman. Just the sheer hopelessness of it.

Yes, and also baby can I hold you.

I’ll also add Everybody hurts - REM to my list above

Always look on the bright side of life. Dad picked it for his funeral. It makes me happy and tearful. I know it's a funeral cliche. I don't care. One year on the 19th.

Ladyofwoods · 15/03/2026 22:52

Also Sometimes when we Touch by Dan Hill. Such emotion. Also Sailing by Christopher Cross. Such a beautiful song which makes me nostalgic for the 80s.

ilovecardigans · 15/03/2026 22:53

The Argonauts by Penfriend (AKA Laura Kidd).

She's a brilliant, independent artist and she wrote this after Sarah Everard was murdered. It's such a beautiful, powerful song. It makes me weep almost every time I listen to it.

Not a song as such but the Welsh national anthem is almost too much for me. I cry everytime I hear it.
My dad is from the valleys and all of my family on his side are welsh. I've grown up with it, it evokes such memories of my dad and his life in the 50s, 60s and 70s in Wales.
My husband is also welsh and we lost his dad not long ago so we feel it for him too.

It makes me feel happy, proud, nostalgic, sad and just gives me such a sense of belonging.

(I dont know if anyone heard the anthem yesterday but it was immense!)

Wichita Linesman is so beautiful, it stops me in my tracks every time.

Lightning crashes by Live, it gets me everytime I hear it.

That's an absolute belter. It feels tragic, then comforting.
It's interesting how songs can be emotional rollercoasters , I guess that's part of the idea!

Sasha07 · 15/03/2026 23:10

Sounds Of Silence, when it's sang by Disturbed. His tone and raw energy speaks to my soul, makes me feel empty and full simultaneously.

ilovecardigans · 15/03/2026 23:14

The Welsh national anthem is my favourite national anthem of them all (and I don't have a drop of Welsh blood in me). It's perfection.

When I Grow Up was played at my DDs primary school leaving assembly. I’m sure the teachers chose it just to make the parents bawl.
I’m welling up just writing this post and thinking about it.

I’m so sorry - This Woman’s Work is right after I’ll Stand by You (Pretenders) on my playlist for my sister who also ended her life. The morning after, I sat in my parents’ garden with Skeeter Davis’ The End of the World on repeat.
Makes Mother’s Day tough, eh? x

It really does, I'm so sorry for the loss of your Sister. We were the closest in our family and was both a Mum and a Sister to me. It's a different grief I think, I had a lot of anger, not towards her, it is the waste of a beautiful vibrant woman that breaks my heart 💔
Hugs to you xxx

Hallelujah, preferably the Jeff Buckley version. So beautiful.

oh and an old Irish song called Black Velvet Band. My dad used to sing it (usually after a few pints) and it reminds me of him. He died in 1995.

AutumnLover1990 · 16/03/2026 10:24

For a friend by The Communards. Lost a dear friend to AIDS just before my wedding in 1993,so this song hits hard. 😔😭

Lonely boy by Andrew Gold. Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. Stay with me til Dawn by Judy Tzuke

Adagio for strings reminds me of The elephant man film, when this was playing as he removed his pillow to die 😭😭😭

Bedshaped by Keane
Bright eyes from Water ship down
It's quiet uptown from Hamilton

@AutumnLover1990ots such a haunting piece of music isn’t it.

can anyone remember Everyday Hurts by Sad Cafe? It always makes me misty eyed.

madaboutpurple · 16/03/2026 18:25

Puff the magic dragon always made me cry as a child, my teacher played thhe guitar and told me he would not sing it anymore as I cried and I would ask him to keep singing it.

When i was having a look for the lyrics - i read about another verse where the boys daughter comes and puff comes back 🥰🥰

i do wonder if the guys that wrote it meant it to be so gut wrenching

Edited

‘Her eyes, they shone like diamonds,
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band.”
(By the Dubliners or the Chieftains) — is that the one?
A great song and how lovely that it brings back fond memories of your Da. Reminds me of raucous nights with much singing in Irish pubs in north London. Also a
grand memory.
