I want to buy someone some gin as a gift but I don’t like it myself. What’s your favourite and why?

Isle of Harris. Its delicious and comes in a beautiful bottle.

PonyPatter44 · 14/03/2026 17:13

Highclere if they like Downton Abbey. Again, decent gin, and a fancy bottle. Waitrose have that Japanese Roka gin on offer at the moment. Its a bit unusual.

Galloway Distillery Hills and Harbour Gin. Lovely clean flavour in a beautiful bottle.

It's a difficult thing to buy for someone if you don't know their preference. I love him but all not a fan of flavoured gins. I know some gin lovers who wouldn't touch Gordon's or Bombay Sapphire etc but I like them although there are nicer gins but they are a good everyday gin. If they like a nice bottle, Mermaid gin is good. Japanese Roka is very nice also. Avoid bathtub gin, tastes like bathwater literally 🤣 York gin is very very nice

Arregaithel · 14/03/2026 17:23

because it tastes delicious, this Whitley Neill

What is unusual about Japanese Roka gin? I saw it in a shop the other day for the first time.

I have previously given her York gin so now I am thinking she would also like Japanese Roka although still not sure why it was described as ‘unusu’.

Roka is one of the few gins I dislike.
Bathtub and Isle of Harris are good,as is Jawbone, Caorunn and GHQ.
But it all comes down to personal taste preferences.

I like flavoured gins like rhubarb and ginger, but would likely only have 1 or 2 glasses (which is probably a good thing!). If getting a non flavoured one, maybe consider a smaller, microbrewery locally. They seem to be popping up everywhere.

Roka has yuzu as one of the botanicals - citrussy. I like it but as with all things, personal tastes differ. For traditional style gin, like Harris gin, as mentioned above, Dyfi gin and Pickerings. Brockmans is also delicious but has a slight berry flavour rather than a straightforward clean gin taste.

AsparagusSeason · 14/03/2026 17:58

We’re not exactly connoisseurs, but we like Plymouth, Tanqueray and The Botanist (about to have one of these). My husband works often in Sweden and always brings back a bottle of Hernö.

For a g&t, it has to have lime, never lemon, and a good tonic.

Maddy70 · 14/03/2026 17:58

Gin mare

TinselAngel · 14/03/2026 17:59

Ophir is a lovely spicy gin.

Nopenousername · 14/03/2026 17:59

Hendrix and I have finally treated myself to a bottle!

TeenLifeMum · 14/03/2026 18:01

Sipsmiths - especially the orange one

WonderingWanda · 14/03/2026 18:04

The South West has some very good gins on offer. I really like Salcome Gin and Copper Frog. Salcombe gin is my favourite, such a lovely flavour.

Don't buy Plymouth gin it's a bit rough and ready.

AgnesMcDoo · 14/03/2026 18:06

This. Expensive but exquisite

GriseldaandMike · 14/03/2026 18:07

Find a gin that is made locally to somewhere significant so your local distillery, one near where you met or made at her favourite childhood holiday spot.

Defiantlynot41 · 14/03/2026 18:08

Caorunn
The Botanist
Gin Mare
Brecon

are all good clean classic gins. I’d stay away from anything flavoured unless you know it’s a favourite

begonefoulclutter · 14/03/2026 18:08

Gordon's.

@Choux As a gift, what about Buckingham Palace gin, it is infused with botanicals from the Buck House gardens. In a lovely bottle too.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 14/03/2026 18:09

As a collector of over 50 bottles I agree it’s a very personal thing. For example I hate Harris but agree beautiful bottle.

middle of the road appeal to most are Gins lik Gin Mare, Hills and Harbour, Edinburgh Gin, Eden Mill etc. Salt Gin is Australian and comes in a lovely bottle. It’s again; a middle of the road gin that would appeal to most. Ben Lomond is also a good Scottish gin in a nice bottle

sunsu · 14/03/2026 18:11

Hendricks or Harris are my favourites for clean gin flavours. I love the blue downpour for something with a bit of spice! Tiree or Orkney gin is also good.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 14/03/2026 18:11

Agree with Botanist or Rock Rose also.

not Hendricks, Gordon’s or a flavoured gin though 🤮
