What do you consider posh?

Is posh subjective/relative do you think or is there a universally agreed upon definition? I mean I guess everyone would say the royal family is posh right?! A work acquaintance called me posh today when I told her the street I live on and it made me think god if she thinks I’m posh where does she live?! Quite amusing as I’ve never been called posh before and the street I live on is mainly small 3-bed semis, mix of council and privately owned but not what I’d call posh, just not a council estate

We have just spent a wonderful holiday with some friends who I would consider posh (parents both privately educated & have professions rather than jobs, kids at private school, live abroad in a country where it’s the norm to have staff etc), when I said in passing ‘ooh that’s posh’ to describe something their DD7 said, ‘Daddy, what does posh mean?’! So now I consider a person to be posh when they don’t know what posh means as it’s not even a concept to them! 😂

So true. Had an interesting chat with our DDs recently where they mentioned their boyfriends' familes think 'they're a bit posh'. Apparently, this is because (among other things) they went to a girls' grammar, had tennis lessons, holidays in Cornwall & Tuscany and grew up in a naice village.

I had to break it to them that we're most definitely not posh, because if we were it would never even occur to us to discuss it.

We're actually just wealthy with quite a few noveau riche tendencies.

Loadsa money!

Loadsa money

😃

Indeed. I'm pondering when comfortable becomes wealthy and then rich!

Not if posh as seen as a bit of an insult, which it is imo. I connect it with silver spoon, privileged, don’t know what hard work is, silly, out of touch. I don’t think most people actually want to be thought of as posh!

Oh I would! I'll settle for being thought of as middle class though - which my interests are if not my background. But I don't equate posh with being silly or out of touch.

I live within the area of an expensive, old boarding school. I see those sixth-form boarder students regularly out and about. I can tell them a mile off from their walk, how they carry themselves, their general dress, and then their speech. They are posh.

I also see the local day pupils from the same school fairly often but they often don’t have the same presence or manner about them.

Snap - Sainsburys on a Sunday afternoon in the town next to me they all come in to get their tuck. There are quite a few Spaniards as well as Brits but you can just tell whatever their nationality they are posh. We also have a music festival in the summer and I remember a young man probably 19/20 say in a very posh/well educated loud and clear voice to the assistant - excuse me where are the Johnnies (is that how you spell it I am doubting myself!).

Speaking of Sainsbury’s… I remember once having a dispute with a Scottish colleague, who claimed that Tesco is posher than Sainsbury’s. No? Not when I lived in London! She said they have a Tesco Extra in her part of Glasgow. Does she think bigger / newer is posher?

Fearlesssloth · 21/03/2026 07:46

I’m Scottish and I can tell you she’s definitely wrong. Sainsburys and Tesco have the same social standing as they do in England, with Sainsburys sitting just above Tesco on the supermarket poshness scale. IMO it goes like this from poshest to most common - M&S, Waitrose (maybe they’re on par), Sainsburys, Aldi/Lidl, Tesco, Coop (although this is often people’s only supermarket option if they live in a rural area so it’s kind of classless), Morrisons, Asda, Iceland

No!! Tesco should be up higher than Aldi or Lidl surely? It’s certainly more expensive.

It’s definitely is in Ireland where I am a least. We don’t have some of the other supermarkets and do have a couple of extra ones that aren’t in the UK, so hard to judge the rest of the list 😁

LaMarschallin · 21/03/2026 08:00

I thought Morrisons should come above the Coop 🤔

Cyclingmummy1 · 21/03/2026 08:01

We have a number of friends who are 'posh', ie good education and family money, though our wealthiest friends are from a very 'ordinary' background.

I'm 'posh' at my current school even though my background is the same as the other staff. I'm older and have taken different opportunities. Consequently, my class read aloud with a more 'rounded' regional accent and their tier 1 vocabulary is wider.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/03/2026 08:01

I consider trying g to out-educate each other on georgraphy very posh 😎

A lot of people have said they equate posh with being well-educated or having a ‘good’ education. What does that mean? Having a degree? Cos lots of working class people have degrees

Hmm yes maybe you are right. I don’t have much experience of Aldi & Lidl cos I can never be bothered to learn about all the different brands..I know what I like! But I know of a lot of middle-class people who shop there. Tesco is definitely bang in the middle I reckon

Any other non Brits here fine these constant class threads equally amusing, bonkers, and somewhat endearing?

It's such a British obsession 'does my toilet brush/ napkin/ clothing/ school/ etc make me posh'? It's so small...

Also I said British, but I'm a foreigner living in rural West Wales and I suspect it's actually an English thing. Don't think we do posh in Wales (thankfully)

I'm a Brit and no one in real life gives a hoot about class. Remember Mumsnet is anorher country!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/03/2026 10:22

In always been surrounded by posh people with the job that I do and I’ve never had a problem with people sending their children to private school or enjoying expensive holidays and cars. It’s the jealousy politics of the end of capitalism that’s fuelling all the negativity now. People used to feel like they were doing okay and felt like they could be aspirational and possibly get a better standard of living if they worked hard or studied more. I don’t think many people feel like that now, so it’s much easier to tear stuff down instead.

More than a standard school offer. So music, debating, sport, whatever is the child's interest.

A better tier 1 vocabulary is an asset and helps to eliminate imposter syndrome. It gives confidence in different situations. Life is easier if you have opportunities.

I work in education. And there a big difference in opportunities and aspirations and according to class.
Where I work is low socioeconomic students. Even if they do aspire their families can’t afford the opportunities eg there are sown amazing engineering opportunities medicine but you have to pay.
