Tice’s refugee logic unravels on LBC. After backing strikes and regime change in Iran, he’s asked the obvious: if Iranians flee the chaos, should Britain take them? Tice dodges, claiming they’ll “go back”.

Badenoch can say she’d go to war because she doesn’t have to do it.

Been in the garden to once again fill the green bin (it costs me £58 year and is well worth it for exercise and making the garden beautiful.). Observed two lots of hedgehog poo. I won't post a picture 😂

One journey in Brum takes me down a 3 mile stretch of linked 20mph roads and zones.

This is about 300m! He reckons it's more dangerous because people drive like dicks.

On this 3 mile stretch, it's impossible to overtake. And invariably some sad loser* will stick to 20, so everyone has to.

Same as on the roads with 30mph average speed cameras - the cars obeying the limit are a natural brake on the fucking idiots (which is what my spellchecker changes "selfish cunts who speed" to).

The problem with whining about 20mph speed limits is that even on a 5 mile uninterrupted journey, you only save 5 minutes. Which you would lose in a single set of lights in the centre of Brum.

Also 20mph is much kinder to the roads, the atmosphere and - assuming you aren't a thickie - your pocket. (Accelerating to 30mph requires 2.25 times more energy than accelerating to 20mph. Driving at a steady 20mph can reduce urban fuel costs by up to 30%)

Hope I haven't offended any thickies out there.

(Also, it's a law of nature that for every racetrack that has been saddled with a 20mph limit, there will be a single track switchback country lane somewhere that has a NSL posted.

placemats · 05/03/2026 13:39

So the arguments for 20mph is as follows

It reduces deaths significantly
It saves energy expenditure for a car

I'll add another.

Reduces potholes.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I'd believe most potholes arise from power steering and EV acceleration. Basically pretending you are a 21st century country on 19th century infrastructure.

That interview was carried out by Lewis Goodall and analysed on yesterday’s News Agents. He was scathing to say the least. They also pointed out that Starmer’s stance is aligned with the majority of the UK public who really don’t want a repeat of 2003 and US voters, including a number of Republicans, are also against it. The hypocrisy of the warmongers is astounding, given their outcry at the possibility of boots on the ground in a peacekeeping capacity in Ukraine. There’s no logic to it.

I marched in 2003. There were a million of us (less than for the anti Brexit marches). It achieved the square root of fuck all.

Actually, that's not true. It demonstrated that "democracy" is a very movable feast and ushered in the corrosive systemic cynicism in politics that delivered unto the UK Farage and friends and their "The elite are ignoring you" trope that they have dined out on ever since.

Happy (as always and ever) to have my workings challenged here.

What do Britons think the UK military response should be to the US-Iran conflict should be -

To add to this hypocrisy is that free speech seems nonexistent in Dubai.

As Oakeshott was asked in that interview yesterday, what if Starmer did similar.

The worst of our potholes here are the ones churned up by snowploughs. Thankfully we haven't had as much need for them, this year.

BIossomtoes · 05/03/2026 14:32

Thanks @Notonthestairs. That’s pretty compelling, not much support for Trump there, even among Reform voters.

Very little support - not that you would know it from MN!

I've got a funny feeling that pot holes repairs by our council are dug up in the middle of the night. Simply because they reappear the next day.

LlynTegid · 05/03/2026 11:06

They do in Wales as it is not just on side roads. My view on 20mph roads is that the design should be such you are forced to slow down.

Time for cat tax.

Not in all parts of Wales. Here in the north-west nobody is bothered about it. I haven't heard anyone mention it and most are pleased they exist near schools etc. The Welsh Tories (remember them?) were obsessed with it and now Reform have taken it up.

You really can't "repair" potholes. You need to relay the entire road - substrate and all. And when you do it, you need to ensure that it is mechanically capable of enduring the repeated wack of 44-tonne axles (not the 5 tonnes from 1939) plus the shearing force created by EV acceleration.

And the real issue here is the ongoing (since the late 80s) desire to reduce private car journeys and do as little as possible to be seen to incentivise them.

Given who was in power 2010-2014, it's entirely possible to construct a credible narrative that the current state of the UK roads is the result of a decision to punish the electorate for daring to resists road tolls and pricing that did for the M6 toll.

cardibach · 05/03/2026 15:20

persephonia · 05/03/2026 11:28

I think if the rest of the country is at risk because of the UK base, or partly because of the base, shrugging and going "that's your lookout" isn't very fair. And likely to reduce enthusiasm for having a base there. And actually way to close to JD Vance's view of the world (America being taken for a ride because it has soldiers on bases on other countries etc). Also they are allies. But France is also an ally, Greece is an ally and even though it's not great the UK was caught short with the frigate, part of the point of alliances is providing assistance when needed.

I can see that - I didn’t mean we shouldn’t, more that to say they are ‘disappointed’ is a stretch. But he then added that Starmer had done the right thing, so not sure what he meant really.

Watching the Crufts flyball. DHs club just about to go. Very exciting.

Update. Happened to whisper my concerns on a closed WhatsApp and guess what? The residents know who they are and they also maintain the flag flying opposite a Cooperative store. Reform supporter, previously Independent, previously Conservative.

Nicely put from Starmer

He said he has consulted with "allies AND the United States".
