Nick Clegg is now saying the university tuition fees system is a mess.

Hmm

An excellent move. There is a place for a second chamber but it shouldn't be populated with people who are there purely through birthright.

Ideally it should be peopled from the choices of the electorate who did not vote for the government.

No one has ever really explained why a system, that takes the entry conditions for the second chamber to be a failure to enter the primary. It's a self policing system that would deliver a level of balance. You only need one election too.

Obviously the primary candidate would get more power so to speak. but it' snot absolute.

Personally I would scrap out entire constitution and bring in sortition overnight.

Culture war latest: the Bank of England has announced that after a public consultation, to which it received 44,000 responses, the next new banknotes will feature native wildlife.

Tories: "It is deeply depressing that under Lab our national heroes are considered too 'divisive' to be on bank notes."

The disconnect between native and national is quite something else.

Why do the Tories hate democracy ?

I mean, is native wildlife not also made up of national heroes, in terms of sustaining our environment?

Starmer giving Badenoch’s a pasting about her sudden announcement she’d never wanted to go into war with the US. She is banging on about fuel duty rise when it hasn’t risen and won’t until September.
She also reckons she could personally have got HMS Dragon ready a week earlier. And now harking back to Shiner and army prosecutions.

cardibach · 11/03/2026 12:12

And still going on about fuel price rises as though it’s something caused by the government. She’s really not doing well.

PickAChew · 11/03/2026 12:14

The removal of some of the cheaper mortgage deals this week is probably Starmer's fault, too.

PandoraSocks · 11/03/2026 12:14

Oof. I almost feel sorry for Badenoch.

DuncinToffee · 11/03/2026 12:15

This is painful to watch, she knows better about HMS Dragon than the Navy

Being honest I couldn't really give a shit. The key fact is that the public were asked.

cardibach · 11/03/2026 12:17

Clegg is now talking about mortgage rates and petrol price rises - but has said Starmer was right to stay out. He does seem to think Starmer could have stopped fuel rises…

Some 60% of respondents selected it as one of their preferred themes, ahead of architecture and landmarks (56%); historical figures (38%); arts, culture and sport (30%); innovation (23%); and noteworthy milestones (19%), the Bank said.

If you want to avoid fuel price instability:

  • reduce fuel usage (we should have loads of nukes)
  • ramp up storage so you can exploit the market better.

It's weird how neither of those suit the 1% who make money from the situation rather then the 99% who pay for it.

Even more than 52%

PickAChew · 11/03/2026 12:27

Her comment about people in rural areas relying on cars - my parents had a regular bus to their nearest city until their Tory Council stopped subsidising it.

I watch PMQs now for the laughs regarding Badenoch, but war and the consequence is no laughing matter.

I would struggle with the other options and go straight into native wildlife which, to my mind, shapes everything else.

Also there's lots of complicated feather and fur and fern detailing to be done to tick that box.
And it looks really nice. It's by far the most visually appealing option.

Well we all know one trick in "democracy" is to ensure the most popular option is not available.

Many years ago, I was "volunteered" onto an employee-management forum. The #1 request from staff was flextime (c. 87%). The forum was specifically not allowed to consider that as a possible offering in lieu of a payrise.

As the CEO told the meeting, "The problem with flextime is that it means managers have to start to account for the individuals in their teams"

I was not the post popular person for replying too quickly:

"Er, isn't that what they are supposed to be doing anyway ?"

First set of documents relating to Peter Mandelson published

The government has just published the first set of documents relating to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to the US.
