Would you want to survive a catastrophic event?

The kind where groups of people are rebuilding from scratch?

I don’t, I’m too old to repopulate society. I have a prolapsed disc so heavy lifting/ uncomfortable sleeping and sitting would be a nightmare. I’m not brave or strong. I don’t have any skills that would make me an asset other that child care which I would not want to do.

Nope.

Grupon · 03/03/2026 07:13

No way. If a nuclear bomb was on the way I’d be straight outside to make sure I’d be gone

Whaleandsnail6 · 03/03/2026 07:17

No.

I always think this when I'm watching something like The Walking Dead or that film, Threads...I want to be one of the first to go.

LoveheartBear · 03/03/2026 07:19

I was talking about this with my parents the other day. I was thinking about Trump building his bunker under the White House, imaging him and all his gang safe, whilst his minions were taken out. I then pictured them emerging from their confines, having no one to pander to their every need!

Personally, I wouldn’t like to be left to deal with the numerous repercussions of such an attack, so would want to be wiped out quite quickly.

icebearforpresident · 03/03/2026 07:19

Not really. I’m a type 1 diabetic so once whatever insulin I happen to have when it all goes to shit has ran out I’m dead anyway.

WhatNoRaisins · 03/03/2026 07:21

I'm not good with change in general. I didn't cope at all well during lockdown so no, I don't have a lot of faith in myself as a rebuilder after some big life changing (ruining) catastrophe.

Serenity75 · 03/03/2026 07:28

Nope, I always thought how stress free life as a zombie looked in the evil dead. You just stand still unless there’s something to eat nearby!

Skybunnee · 03/03/2026 07:32

Yes - I could cook a squirrel!
I garden so would do my best to collect seed, store food.
we had many fewer home comforts 70 years ago with few cars snd fridges -we managed then -it was normal life, we’d be going back to the life of a peasant 100 years ago

DoAWheelie · 03/03/2026 07:34

No, I wouldn't. My late OH was living with a terminal illness for 7 years which triggered a lot of soul searching conversations about what quality of life looks like to both of us and what we wanted to do in the limited years we had left.

This is one of the (many) scenarios we talked about. I'm disabled and only really have a good quality of life due to access to technology and modern medicine. Without those I'd be in constant pain and unable to do any of the activities that bring me joy. If he was still alive and we both survived I would fight to keep him safe, (and he would me) but on my own I have no real motivation.

outofsounds · 03/03/2026 07:35

No, definitely not. Should a nuclear bomb be unleashed on the UK I hope it lands right on top of me.

HopSpringsEternal · 03/03/2026 07:36

I could. Im good at organising community shit, conflict resolution, can build a fire, use an axe, grow veg. Though if the coffee runs out I might get a bit too antsy.
I found covid easy, like change, have had lots of life changing thjngs happen and am very much a let's plough on through. This wont be forever sort of person.

HearHareHere · 03/03/2026 07:37

I’ve often thought about this but no, I don’t think I would like to survive. I’m a bit of a wimp!
However, I do love a good apocalypse film or book but to actually live it - nope, not for me! 😬🙈

mrssunshinexxx · 03/03/2026 07:37

If my children survived , yes.

MyThreeWords · 03/03/2026 07:40

Yes, absolutely! Ever since the BBC's Survivors drama in the 70s I've fantasised about a lifestyle that involved smashing the plate glass windows of supermarkets and department stores, getting what I need, and retreating into the woods with my dog. Or, now that I am older, perhaps retreating into the home of a dead billionaire.

Ideally I would be the only one left, save for a few favoured relatives and a scattering of well-mannered people in other cities. I wouldn't want to risk a 28-days later type of scenario in which the other survivors are more of a problem than the actual pandemic/zombies/nuclear winter/etc.

Potatoelephant · 03/03/2026 07:40

Nope. I love “end of the world films / tv” but always say to my husband that if anything happened in real life, I’d rather we all died peacefully at home rather than try to survive. Like the woman who tucks her kids into bed when the titanic is going down!

ForFunGoose · 03/03/2026 07:41

I would rather not know and not survive .

DashingDanton · 03/03/2026 07:41

Yes I think I would. I’ve always thought I’d be quite good in a scenario like this 😂 I’m a good organiser and planner and very resourceful. Too old to repopulate the world but there’s a reason we’ve evolved to live beyond our fertile
years.

In reality I’d probably just die like everyone else.

Babsandherwabs · 03/03/2026 07:42

mrssunshinexxx · 03/03/2026 07:37

If my children survived , yes.

Exactly. I don’t want my kids having to survive an apocalypse without parents, and if they’re all dead I probably would be pretty miserable so may as well go.

My life goal is to get reeeeally old. I want to live until my eldest is like 65 (I’d be 90).

GentleSheep · 03/03/2026 07:43

If I was younger and not disabled then yes! However as things stand it would be a struggle and I'd be a burden to any group.

JuliettaCaeser · 03/03/2026 07:43

Read the book To Paradise. She describes this. The impact of a huge event. How the worst survived and all felt quite guilty and furtive about it. The good all died only the ruthless those prepared to screw over others including their own families survived and every survivor knew that’s who they were.

Bananarice · 03/03/2026 07:44

Only if it magically took away my autoimmune illness. I can see my family putting themselves in danger and sacrificing to get some insulin for me. Which would only prolong my death.

SouthernNights59 · 03/03/2026 07:55

I would probably be hopeless but I like to think I would at least try.

If it is a nuclear event, the squirrels will be gone and the soil irradiated.

Pizzatrip · 03/03/2026 08:13

I would.. I think I’d be quite good at it.. probably better than I am at modern life. I’d sew my fanny shut though, as getting pregnant/having another baby would be horrendous without the wonders of modern medicine.

The only thing I wouldn’t want to survive from would be something nuclear, as don’t fancy the slow, painful death.

But the Survivors was about a deadly virus wasn't it? Not a nuclear war. So probably there wouldn't be any department stores/billionaires' houses etc still standing. I do like the sound of your scenario though 😄
