Would you want to survive a catastrophic event?

The kind where groups of people are rebuilding from scratch?

I don’t, I’m too old to repopulate society. I have a prolapsed disc so heavy lifting/ uncomfortable sleeping and sitting would be a nightmare. I’m not brave or strong. I don’t have any skills that would make me an asset other that child care which I would not want to do.

No, I barely want to survive a minor inconvenience let alone a catastrophic one. 😂

Same 🤣🤣

I could. Im good at organising community shit, conflict resolution, can build a fire, use an axe, grow veg. Though if the coffee runs out I might get a bit too antsy.
I found covid easy, like change, have had lots of life changing thjngs happen and am very much a let's plough on through. This wont be forever sort of person.

Found Covid easy? You mean when nobody went out and we had to queue for groceries - hardly an apocalypse 😂

Bohemond23 · 03/03/2026 12:27

I live 5 miles from Hinkley Point. I've always planned to run towards it rather than away.

MyThreeWords · 03/03/2026 07:40

Yes, absolutely! Ever since the BBC's Survivors drama in the 70s I've fantasised about a lifestyle that involved smashing the plate glass windows of supermarkets and department stores, getting what I need, and retreating into the woods with my dog. Or, now that I am older, perhaps retreating into the home of a dead billionaire.

Ideally I would be the only one left, save for a few favoured relatives and a scattering of well-mannered people in other cities. I wouldn't want to risk a 28-days later type of scenario in which the other survivors are more of a problem than the actual pandemic/zombies/nuclear winter/etc.

Me too! I loved that series

Waitingfordoggo · 03/03/2026 12:48

If my (young adult) children had survived it then yes. Otherwise no.

I’m able-bodied and reasonably fit but fundamentally lazy and also a very negative thinker so I wouldn’t be a good or useful person to have around. I’m also conflict-averse and I suspect a post-apocalyptic world would be full of tension and conflict so that wouldn’t suit me either.

Wolmando · 03/03/2026 12:51

No, I'm old anyway so getting ready to go.

Ketryne · 03/03/2026 12:52

Potatoelephant · 03/03/2026 07:40

Nope. I love “end of the world films / tv” but always say to my husband that if anything happened in real life, I’d rather we all died peacefully at home rather than try to survive. Like the woman who tucks her kids into bed when the titanic is going down!

Yes! I’ve always looked at the woman in titanic tucking her children in and thought she’s the only one with any real sense. Sometimes there are worse outcomes than instant death. Obviously I’d prefer my kids to survive, but I don’t want them suffering. Watching The Last Of Us really made me I couldn’t cut it in a post apocalyptic world!

mrssunshinexxx · 03/03/2026 07:37

If my children survived , yes.

Same.

BrownSharpie · 03/03/2026 12:59

I reckon I’d be quite happy. Getting rid of a good chunk of England/Europes population would be so beneficial. I can grow food at home, I’m well stocked for medicines, water and power supplies.

My kids would probably drive me insane with no school so I’d have to get creative but apart from that I think we’d be okay.

Carrotsandgrapes · 03/03/2026 13:01

No from me. In all the apocalypse films, books etc, in turns out that the real danger for the survivors isn't the zombies/nuclear fallout/aliens/climate disaster. The real danger is other people (men).

Women and children suffer a lot already at the hands of men, imagine that in a lawless society, where everyone is focused on survival and power.

I know it's a fun question, but actually it makes you think a bit

MrsLizzieDarcy · 03/03/2026 13:03

No. I did some training in a Government department I used to work in and that made me convinced that I'd just go outdoors and be obliterated. The biggest threat is never food, water or contamination - it's other humans.

wertgyhjk · 03/03/2026 13:04

Only if may cats did, so I could look after them. Otherwise, no thanks.

tutugogo · 03/03/2026 13:07

Not particularly, was discussing with bil who said if it all kicked off we could decamp to his, middle of nowhere. I don’t think I’m cut out for that sort of thing

AshHeart · 03/03/2026 13:11

Skybunnee · 03/03/2026 07:32

Yes - I could cook a squirrel!
I garden so would do my best to collect seed, store food.
we had many fewer home comforts 70 years ago with few cars snd fridges -we managed then -it was normal life, we’d be going back to the life of a peasant 100 years ago

Well, of course you can only do that if you aren't attacked by the people who go around attacking others knowing there won't be
any consequences. I've watched too many apocalypse films to think I'd want to be around.

MsWilmottsGhost · 03/03/2026 13:12

angelos02 · 03/03/2026 09:46

There is no amount of prepping that could make much of a difference. No clean water, you won't last more than a few days.

See this is the attitude that confuses me.

How on earth do you think humans survived to the present day? We are more resilient than you think.

Plus, there are many ways to make water safe-er, maybe not as good as treated tap water, but a world away from sewer water.

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/03/2026 13:12

I’m not convinced I’d last long but I am bloody brilliant in an emergency, calm, pragmatic and great at coming up with workarounds. I would want to survive just to make sure I got DD and DH situated as best as possible for the long term. I however would only need to lose my glasses to be completely useless, have diabetes so once my meds run out I’d be on a downward trajectory and have no physical abilities at all so would be useless at any of the hunting/building/running stuff.

allthingsinmoderation · 03/03/2026 13:13

I understand your perspective but in the face of a "catastrophic event" i think survival instinct may kick in.
You may not have physical attributes that are suited to a survival situation but you may have knowledge that has value.
Bottom line is it would be up to you if you wanted to fight for survival or give up and go quietly or exacerbate the end......
My first thought is similar to yours, but i've seen many people change their minds in the face of altered circumstances .

People would soon take all that from you. You'd need weapons to have a chance at stopping them.

FlowerFairyDaisy · 03/03/2026 13:13

Nuclear bomb and fall out, no.

A disaster than meant rebuilding, yes. Especially if it involved working to rebuild with other people.

Icecreamandcoffee · 03/03/2026 13:14

Nope, me and my daughters will be heading to the centre of it. Absolutely no way will I, or my daughter's be involved in "repopulating society". Unless of course, it is guaranteed to be a matriarchal society, then we may think about living.

Until a bunch of men came along and took it all from you after raping and killing.

There is no romance in the end of life as we know it. Once civilization collapses it's kill or be killed

PenelopeAsks · 03/03/2026 08:09

If it is a nuclear event, the squirrels will be gone and the soil irradiated.

The OP said Catastrophic event not nuclear

Wolmando · 03/03/2026 13:20

I took it to mean an earthquake or something like that where everything is destroyed.

MsWilmottsGhost · 03/03/2026 13:36

AshHeart · 03/03/2026 13:13

People would soon take all that from you. You'd need weapons to have a chance at stopping them.

Which people though?

Is this an event that leaves most people alive (and thus civilization mostly intact), or it's an apocalypse that kills most people and hardly anyone is left (many of whom would be grateful to find someone else alive)?

A situation where all civilization is utterly and irrepareably destroyed but still manages to leave many people alive, but for some strange reason they are all psychopaths.....is a zombie apocalypse scenario.

Are you meaning ...war? I thought OP was meaning some unusual and unforeseen disaster. Sadly wars seem to happen rather a lot, so I'm not sure it counts.

Imagine finding notes from your grandparents and great-grandparents who survived the blitz, and finding that they were self-absorbed narcissists who spent the whole time hoping they'd get killed in their beds because they couldn't deal with the anxiety and added responsibilities.

Now imagine it's 2026 and you admit something very similar and somehow manage not to feel sick with shame at yourself.

Uh, and you say you want to help other people?

Judging by your comments here, you'd be right at home with the people who have no value for others.
