Would you want to survive a catastrophic event?

The kind where groups of people are rebuilding from scratch?

I don’t, I’m too old to repopulate society. I have a prolapsed disc so heavy lifting/ uncomfortable sleeping and sitting would be a nightmare. I’m not brave or strong. I don’t have any skills that would make me an asset other that child care which I would not want to do.

It would depend what it was. Nuclear war, no.

Destruction caused by other things, yes.

IceBrownie · 03/03/2026 10:01

I'm fit, have helpful skills and would fight for my DC, but anarchy around men is a deal breaker.

We've seen what they do to women and children in a "civilised" society with rules and laws, I wouldn't subject my DC to that kind of world.

Jane143 · 03/03/2026 10:02

As long as I knew I wasn’t leaving anyone I loved alone to struggle, then id go

pouletvous · 03/03/2026 10:03

I need to be alive to protect my child. So, yes. I would want to survive

BackinRed101 · 03/03/2026 10:04

yes because it depends on what caused it etc

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/03/2026 10:07

I'm already exhausted and my life is fairly simple 😄

MajorProcrastination · 03/03/2026 10:10

Whenever I read/watch a post-apocalyptic book/film I reflect that I'd probably be wiped out in the first wave. I'm not important or useful enough to be in a rescue bunker or ark.

rockstuckhardplace · 03/03/2026 10:14

Yes because I'm quite bored of life right now and would relish the excitement!

In reality, I wear contact lenses which I would have to take out at some point and then I'd be basically useless. I always wonder about short sighted people in these films.

I don't think so. I absolutely hate building flat pack furniture, never mind having to rebuild society.

🤣🤣🤣

Theseventhmagpie · 03/03/2026 10:22

I actually can’t even think of these scenarios- too upsetting. It’s not me I care about it’s our children.

SpringIsSpringing2026 · 03/03/2026 10:23

Not any more.

a few years ago, absolutely.

but I've since been made disabled by a stroke & now have some other health issues. I barely have the energy.ability to get through the day let alone actually DO anything. I'd be an absolute liability.

im driving towards the nuclear bomb.

Quote of the day.

BarbieShrimp · 03/03/2026 10:32

Yes, I would. Even in the face of physical/social/environmental ruin, I would cling on until my last breath so I could help others in the same position. Maybe I wouldn't change much but I'd die trying. That's what being human means to me.

Sad how many people think it's edgy and cute to wish for instant death at the slightest thought of hardship or change. What a nation of soft, weak-spirited cowards we've become.

You get one life and you sometimes don't get to choose what your time on this earth looks like. You do get to choose what you do with it.

Peacexbliss · 03/03/2026 10:35

Im single and childless im not bothered either way.
Part of me wishes something would kick off in the UK, see who can survive, might shut a few up.

The other part off me says I hope not due to families having to live through it.

youalright · 03/03/2026 10:36

Nah seems a lot of effort

Disturbia81 · 03/03/2026 10:39

Not at all. Life looks so desolate after. I imagine the only positive thing is human connection

GinaandGin · 03/03/2026 10:50

I've watched THREADS so no..

There is also a chilling scene in 28 days later when the female character realises how big the threat of rape is for her

ZeppelinTits · 03/03/2026 10:55

mrssunshinexxx · 03/03/2026 07:37

If my children survived , yes.

This was my first thought as well, which is why I’d be a yes just to make sure my DC was okay.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 03/03/2026 10:58

Depends on the nature of the "event".

Nuclear apocalypse? Probably not.

Zombie apocalypse? Absolutely, in fact, I'll be heartbroken if I die of old age without having at least one legal recrimination-free opportunity to smash heads in with a nailed baseball bat.

mondaytosunday · 03/03/2026 11:00

I play a game with my kids when we are driving: oh that would be a good place in a zombie apocalypse (when driving past the navy barracks in Portsmouth) … but in reality I’m a type 1 middle aged diabetic and overweight too so I’d be eaten or die from lack of insulin. Same if there was a world wide nuclear catastrophe.

AnotherEmma · 03/03/2026 11:10

Depends entirely whether my children survive or not. If one or both of them survive, I'd want to survive too. They are young and still need me. But if my children didn't survive I most definitely wouldn't want to. No point.

gamerchick · 03/03/2026 11:11

Not as a women no.

ItsameLuigi · 03/03/2026 11:28

No, I barely want to survive a minor inconvenience let alone a catastrophic one. 😂

BarbieShrimp · 03/03/2026 11:32

Imagine finding notes from your grandparents and great-grandparents who survived the blitz, and finding that they were self-absorbed narcissists who spent the whole time hoping they'd get killed in their beds because they couldn't deal with the anxiety and added responsibilities.

Now imagine it's 2026 and you admit something very similar and somehow manage not to feel sick with shame at yourself.

Echobelly · 03/03/2026 12:17

Honestly if I heard a warning that a nuke was falling on London I'd be tempted to grab the family and go somewhere we could be sure to be instantly incinerated.
