Would you want to survive a catastrophic event?

The kind where groups of people are rebuilding from scratch?

I don’t, I’m too old to repopulate society. I have a prolapsed disc so heavy lifting/ uncomfortable sleeping and sitting would be a nightmare. I’m not brave or strong. I don’t have any skills that would make me an asset other that child care which I would not want to do.

No I love a good apocalyptic tv show but I do always think I’d rather go out early. No way I want to be eeking out a miserable existence.

If only women and children left yes. A world where men didn’t have law and order? No.

Oh and hard agree to this. Watching 28 days later near the end where you realise non infected men are as dangerous as infected. I was late teens when this came out and the horror of that moment has always stuck with me.

HarryVanderspeigle · 03/03/2026 22:19

Just ask Piggy how well it went for him once his glasses were lost.

I am sure some kind of self preservation instinct would kick in, but with my health and disabilities, I would probably die quite quickly. Which is probably better than surviving just to starve to death or be in some kind of Mad Max dystopia.

binnibonnieboo · 03/03/2026 22:46

Yes, so long as my child did too. There's only this one life, I'll have whatever there is of it.

Tumbleweed101 · 03/03/2026 22:52

I'm a bit old to repopulate but young enough to be a teacher of various skills and probably to survive so long as it wasn't nuclear/radiation based.

soundsys · 03/03/2026 23:17

We were talking about this the other day and absolutely not! We agreed the best option is just to be ka-blammed in the initial incident and not know anything about it

No way. If a nuclear bomb was on the way I’d be straight outside to make sure I’d be gone

I'd be running straight towards the fucker! Id probably dive head first into it 😎🔥

I have hideous health problems and uncontrollable pain hence the above!

So the answer to the post is a resounding; No -fook that.

Nuclear war,not a chance Ive seen Threads and When the Wind Blows, but I do think I would stand a chance with zombies as I have watched enough films and read enough books. Basically bike leathers and helmets and none of those rubbish planks of wood across windows as they seem to be easily broken and limbs can be pulled through to be bitten. Longer term blackouts I reckon I could cope with, tornadoes would be difficult, social unrest would not be great but I would give it a go.

CrackInTheGlass · 04/03/2026 00:18

No, I’d hope DD and I would be well within the impact zone (plus our many pets). I live in a horrible area so if we survived it would torturous and very dangerous to fight to get supplies to keep us all alive. The horrible people here would strip the supermarket across the road bare and have a large amount of the awful balaclava kids around to defend it.
I’d just appreciate some kind of a heads up that it’s going to happen in a decent amount of time so we could gather all of us together in one room in our home and go out as a much loved and loving family.

No, I would prefer to die quickly with my kids close and unaware, in a disaster.

I have a horrible fear that my kids would be at school, locked down and terrified, and I couldn’t get to them to say goodbye and hold them close.

This would be my biggest fear, that I couldn’t get to my DD. Don’t care if I’m running to the school with a mushroom cloud rising up behind me, I’d do everything in my power to get to my child. Lockdown or not, in that situation a parent has to be able to get to their child. I’d have to leave behind our many pets (which would kill me inside) but DD is my highest priority and I’d do anything to get to her.

I don't think so. I absolutely hate building flat pack furniture, never mind having to rebuild society.

Haha, I’m really good at building flat pack furniture and could probably project manage society to some semblance of order. But… being completely shallow… no holidays, no shops, no restaurants? It’d get mundane pretty quickly. Not sure I can be arsed to be honest, so I’m out.

ApeachAndaGoodBook · 04/03/2026 05:22

I don't think I could survive tbh.

icebearforpresident · 03/03/2026 07:19

Not really. I’m a type 1 diabetic so once whatever insulin I happen to have when it all goes to shit has ran out I’m dead anyway.

Exactly. My dh is a diabetic too, and I have asthma, high blood pressure and I'm not very able bodied. Couldn't go long in dirty smoky air especially once my meds ran out. Summer forest fire smoke sickens as it is, even with out ac and purifiers in every room.

No. Definitely not a nuclear war. It would be horrific to survive. Let the politicians, royals and the so called elite rot in a nuclear wasteland.
