Woolly Hugs. A blanket for lovely wafflenose who has tragically lost her daughter. Can you help us please?

We bring such sad news, lovely wafflenose has lost her younger daughter (L) through tragic circumstances and we are just so desperately sorry, thoughts very much with waffle, her family and all who loved her daughter. Really really devastating. Life has been desperately cruel. You may well recognise waffle from music/education/Extra-curricular threads here on MN. Both her lovely daughters have been involved with Mumsnet.

We are so glad waffle would like to receive a Woolly Hug. For those new on here, this is a long standing tradition on Mumsnet where folk come together to make a blanket for one of our own who has been bereaved. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a tribute and full of memories. We hope it may give whatever comfort it can.

People have described L as a quiet light, the gentlest of souls. Let us make something truly beautiful in her honour.

So we come again asking for help and shall need both crafters and donors of funds of wool. Can you help us? We would be truly grateful. Thank you

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have some ideas for themes..
Initials please E, G, L and K

She played the recorder, the clarinet and the cello, but focused mainly on the clarinet latterly and played in the National Children's Orchestra Under 10s for a while. Her NCO hoodie was bright blue - a bit like Yarnsmith dark turquoise.

She loved art and reading and was very creative. Loved Harry Potter and would probably have been in Hufflepuff house had she been at Hogwarts.

She had a quirky mind and used to love lego.

She was quite a fashionista. Loved Vogue magazine and Miss Dior perfume

Favourite colours were pink and white (pink more than white).

English literature was the love of her life. We are hoping someone can recreate a bookshelf square? One of her favourite books was Jane Eyre. She had also been studying Plath and Hughes.

She loved swimming and the great outdoors, particular the Quantock Hills. (Photo) We are hoping this may act as an inspiration.

Work/volunteering: she did Brownies and Guides and volunteered as a Rainbow Guider and also volunteered on a hospital ward for a while. She worked as a waitress and at the village pub.

She was interested in philosophy and was planning to become a psychologist/counsellor.

She liked Fleetwood Mac.

She kept tropical fish, hamsters and gerbils and loved all other animals especially cats.

She also liked art and photography.

She was very passionate about being an organ donor - and several people have now received life-saving operations because of her. A truly wonderful young woman.

Lots of ideas and ways to get to know L better. If you can recreate a theme on a square, wonderful, but we also need simple squares, A square in one of her favourite colours is perfect too.

Lighter silvers
Greens pale to mid. Think nature inspired

Blues - sky to navy inc turquoise.
Sunset shades - red, orange, yellow, gold, but only if creating a sunset!

I left the key under the plant pot and went to bed! I’m not seeing evidence of fish, perhaps fortunately and they are both sparko on the sofa. The tangle of fishing kit though! It’s like some installation art!

My whole family love FawleyBird in her high vis! It wasn’t her happiest time at the vet but it was just a check up and booster jabs. The vet said she was super cute which she knows. She would have liked Maud to have gone with her, but strangely at the time to go Maud was quite literally nowhere to be seen. Gerbil tumbleweed.

Maud finally managed to drag herself off the sofa and is in the garden sorting out her fishing haul from last night.

Unfortunately none of what she caught was a fish. Fawley had to make do with fish flavour Dreamies and is now off sulking somewhere. Probably still in her high vis!

Maud said she got delayed doing her shoelace and by the time she's done it you'd gone.

As an aside I've always wanted a cat flap in the front door.

And... Gosh, Fawley really fluffs up when she's angry!

And why is the hand the wrong way round?

Oh! Maud says this is just a quick sketch she made to depict how the moment of leaving for the vets went.

Sure Maud! We believe you!

It is the close season for fishing, so I'm really glad Maud was just practising.

Better to stick to fish flavour Dreamies till June.

My pink has disappeared completely!

as long as they change the clocks to the right time. Because. I see chaos.

The pink was Maud, She says it's in the bedroom. She's been trying, and failing, to knit Fawley socks.

You may have to go round redoing a few of the clocks. OK all of them. Maud tries her best but British Summer Time is too much for her brain to handle!

Maud has prepared a 'picky tea' today. She wasn't in the mood to slave over a hot stove.

Fawley is just finishing checking everything is in order before Maud calls @KnottyAndPistey through for tea.

That is quite an elaborate picky tea. Wouldn't it have been easier to slave over a hot stove?

Well . I’m completely stuffed!

and discombobulated with the clock change. Getting up to watch the Japanese Grand Prix didn’t help!

Still. I am being productive and have four matching squares underway. They finish on Green. I’ve finished one. 😃💪

True to form, Fawley did stand in my picky bits. That’s not a euphemism. I’m talking our party tea.

She is terrible for this.

I'm very jealous of how talented so many of you are. I've done a mixture - some more square than others 😟 They look more garish in the photo than in real life. Hopefully you can use them. Will post them this week.

😍I can't even get the wool on to a knitting needle so imagine how jealous I am of you all.

Maud will be waiting, impatiently to receive your squares.

Some of mine will need manhandling into shape, hopefully they will be usable, but if not, I won't be offended.

Those are lovely (and I totally get the 'some more square than others' thing - I have that too, with added erratic tension).

Beautiful treasure. Never met a square that doesn’t play nice. Not planning on that starting now!

No post at all yet. But Maud is pacing my path

Maud is rather annoyed.

She and Fawley had finally given up on the postman and planned to go out and get some wind through their fur.

But she can see the postman in the distance and is currently undecided as to what to do.

Doesn't Fawley look the size of a tiger in motorcycle leathers!

The thought of wind in their fur won out.

Fawley took her glove off at the last rest stop and now can't find it.

Here are 4 of my squares (I'm still working on some & will post them all together). The first is the conceptual/minimal bookshelf. I haven't blocked it; it's just too curly to photograph without pinning it.

The second started as a random granny square but started to feel like the great outdoors, so I finished it off with a cloudy sky - & then wondered what the white bits at the centre are. DH suggested sheep!

These two followed on from the previous granny square as I tried to make them deliberately 'the great outdoors'. So at the centre it's grass, then there's a square of trees & then a cloudy sky. The first is day, the second is a moonlit night.
