A few months back according to the media it was Reform's for the taking - now it's a three-way bet between Labour, Greens and Reform

I don't think anyone's denying that homophobia exists within the Muslim community. Just like it does in plenty of other religious communities – including, no doubt, some where Reform voters reside. We're pointing out that in voting terms Muslims are not going to be overturning LGBTQ+ protections in the UK, which is what that PP is implying in their thinly veiled attempt to whip up anti-Muslim sentiment.

If it exists in other communities why haven’t these communities turned up en masse to primary schools to intimidate the staff into not teaching children about gay or non traditional relationships?

They won’t vote to overturn it because they can’t. They don’t have the numbers. At present. Something the Greens very much want to change via their immigration proposals. What then?

Other religious communities (such as they are in the UK) are not voting tactically on issues which have nothing to do with the UK.

What issues are that?

You don't think the residents of G&D are worried about UK issues?

It interests me the number of people who've uncritically accepted Democracy Volunteers claims.

This is interesting and suggests a tactic to make the win by the Greens look illegitimate

Westfacing · 27/02/2026 11:05

It will be interesting to see how the Greens fare in future elections in less diverse areas.

I think voting tactically to keep an anti Muslim, anti-immigration, anti environment, anti workers' rights party from gaining a seat is a perfectly rational thing to do.

No, I think Gaza is the deciding factor for many. That and however willing the party is to prevent scrutiny of their religion.

@Notonthestairsit needs to change to proportional representation

Until you realise the logical conclusion of what you actually voted for, yes.

I think the fact that Narendra Modi was on Urdu-language election leaflets is worthy of discussion in a UK election.

They’ll probably see a rise in middle class areas mostly untouched by immigration like York, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford.

They haven’t a hope in hell in the rest.

My estimate is they’ll end up with about 10 MPs.

Why?

What has the Indian prime minister got to do with a by election in the UK?

And you'd see very similar views among orthodox Jews and evangelical Christians. The problem is religion.

Based on what evidence?

I disagree and don't see similar views at all amongst Christians - but I'm happy to be corrected if you have links to show otherwise.

This would also have to be amongst all people who describe their faith as Christian (not just evangelical Christians) just as the survey was amongst those who describe their faith as Muslim.

What has the Indian prime minister got to do with a by election in the UK?

Because it’s worrying that any country should have political candidates running on a platform of sectarianism.

Yet apparently it’s everyone else ‘sowing division’.

Westfacing · 27/02/2026 11:16

Does anyone know to what extent the so-called 'Muslim vote' helped the Greens win?

I've been looking at the demographics of the G&D area, the actual voting results, and reading comments for example by John Curtice but I can't see if there is any opinion on how it helped numbers-wise.

You think this based on what?

Based on the data that 26% of British Muslims see the most important issue at the next election being the Israeli/ Gaza conflict compared to only 3% of the general population.

The Greens didn't use Modri on their leaflets I think, Labour did to attack the Green party.

But your issue is the use of Modri rather than the use of Urdu?

I expect we will have to wait for a breakdown but I think around a quarter of the population are Muslim.
