Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

Can I just say as well to those saying they roll them up, THERE IS NO WAY A CHILD CAN ROLL UP A KNEE LENGTH SKIRT TO THE POINT OF SHOWING THEIR KNICKERS. They would look like they had a tyre around their waist. Parents need to buy the right length to begin with.

It did sound very uncomfortable to have rolls of skirt round your waist. I don’t have girls but I know I would be pretty strict on school attire if I did.

Maybe because I have ASD and can be apparently particularly petty when it comes to rules that don’t make sense and are blatantly discriminatory

What exactly does the rules state.
That socks are only allowed to be worn by boys
Or girls must wear thick tights. Socks not allowed

What would happen if a girl turns up in trousers would she still not be allowed to wear socks because of her sex

Could the parents of the girls inform the school that their DD’s now identify as boys and now have the name Bill/Pete/Steve/Bryan etc and turn up in their school skirt and knee high socks

If you make stupid rules expect many many questions from a parent like me

They’d probably just reply with - tights are to be worn with skirts. I don’t think it’s saying socks can only be worn by boys, just not with skirts

Only up to the point to they leave the house. Then they are on their own!

Fancyflapjack1 · 25/02/2026 09:55

I think by socks they are not meaning ankle or below the knee socks but the thigh high type that replicate stockings. These with a short skirt are highly sexualised in Henti/school girl fetishist porn and seems to have crossed over into main stream fashion for under 16s.
Just as girls were sold the ‘playboy’ bunny on everything from wallpaper to clothing we need to be aware of the sexualisation and commodification of school girls. This isn’t empowering, and I agree with the school leaders on this. If they really implied that staff and male students were finding it hard to control themselves (sic) then that tone is misogynistic and needs challenging.

But why a blanket ban because of a few? Surely just punish the few? I also see girls locally wearing what is basically a belt so I do appreciate the issue.

This question has been answered multiple times. Trying to police short skirts is a nightmare. Just get your daughter to wear trousers.

Spookyspaghetti · 25/02/2026 09:58

That is an absolutely abhorrent policy. It is sexualising children’s bodies and making girls responsible for how boys and men treat them. I actually think it is a safeguarding issue as how can the teachers at the school keep girls safe from abuse if they vocally believe that female children are responsible for provoking boys and men to feel a certain way?!

If you have the energy, I would be complaining in writing to the school committee, council safeguarding team, and anyone else who will listen.

Wearing tights does not prevent sexual harassment or prevent men from feeling uncomfortable about their own sexual feelings.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 25/02/2026 09:59

Why are skirts still part of school uniform? It should be trousers across the board.

Disturbia81 · 25/02/2026 10:02

Oh for gods sake why are school skirts still a thing. This has been going on since forever. Trousers being compulsory would solve it.

CreativeGreen · 25/02/2026 10:04

I don't agree everyone should wear trousers whether they like it or not - women can wear skirts in the workplace, and girls should be allowed to at school, rather than male clothes being the default 'unisex' because if a man sees a calf he can't be held responsible.

Socks are normal for both sexes, and both sexes should be allowed to wear them.

Shouldn't they just reinforce the school skirt level? I don't want to see anyone's under garments, male or female.

DD’s school tried to enforce skirt length, and introduced a system whereby girls wearing skirts that were too short were sent to the office to borrow an appropriate length skirt for the day. Obvs they couldn’t keep up with the demand for knee length skirts that they never got back. DD took great delight in wearing trousers.

DD has now moved schools - I felt very old this morning when I saw a couple of girls (12 ish, we know know), wearing skirts which sat just below the botuom of their jumpers and well above the reinforced bit at the top of their tights.

DD (14) wears trousers and lace up shoes because “why would I wear clothes I can’t run in”. Seems sensible..

Ophy83 · 25/02/2026 10:04

I don't agree that they should all effectively be punished because of a few (I hate tights!). However there's a big secondary school down our road and I was walking behind a girl in school uniform last week and could see her knickers. I was wondering if she was aware quite how short she had made her skirt. I can also see that a male member of staff could find it awkward to address the issue if girls are wearing their skirts that short in class as they might be accused of looking, but really it was unavoidable

JustSawJohnny · 25/02/2026 10:04

Eastie77Returns · 25/02/2026 08:08

They have reinforced the skirt level but apparently girls arrive at school in the correct skirt and then roll it up during the day.

And that is a SCHOOL problem!

There are plenty of schools who have to deal with this and they do so by having all teachers monitor uniform as kids enter the classroom, on the corridors and by following school behaviour policy for offenders.

I couldn't count on the cells in my body how many arguments I've had with teenage boys who want to wear their coat in school. It's literally the job of staff to control this, just as it was in the 80's when teachers would get a ruler out to measure skirt length or drag kids to the loos to monitor removal of make up/hair gel etc.

Teens rebelling is hardly a new issue in education!

The no socks rule is literally insane.

I'd be flagging this with the press. That Head needs a good old fashion shaming.

Trousers for everyone. Skirts aren’t necessary

usedtobeaylis · 25/02/2026 10:06

I don't give a single fuck what teenage girls wear to school, they are teenage girls and are going to behave as such. I do give a fuck about teenage girls being treated as meat by other adults, including the type of woman who will say 'not all men' out one side of their mouth and then reinforce the idea of men as animals out the other side. Cop the fuck on.

snowymarbles · 25/02/2026 10:06

At my daughter’s school they will suspend for continued uniform infractions such as as too short skirts…..ask me how I know……

mcmuffin22 · 25/02/2026 10:07

Themightyfloof · 25/02/2026 08:34

I'm a teacher. When talking about uniform I often ask why the PE kit includes skorts or netball skirts etc if girls legs are so indecent?

At the school uniform fitting for my dd when she started Yr 7 there was a dad in the school uniform shop asking why the pe skorts were so short (ever since covid the girls have to go in one or two days a week in their PE kit) when the school skirt had to be knee length. At least the skorts have built in shorts and tbh they are longer than most of rolled up skirts. Interestingly at dd's girls' school they all wear cycling shorts under their skirts.

damsela · 25/02/2026 10:07

The focus should be on education not anything to do with clothing. School hours are for teaching and learning not for policing uniforms. That's the reason for school uniforms, to prevent fashion competitiveness I thought.

Nip in bud, uniform clothing for all and that means trousers for all. Summer weight trousers are available everywhere. Rules are rules, send them home if they disobey them. Then get on with the school work for everyone else.

IsItSnowing · 25/02/2026 10:07

I think the deputy head might have worded it poorly but he's right. Seeing young girl's with their ass on display makes people feel uncomfortable - not just men and boys but other women and girls too.
I see young girls going to the school bus in the morning with their skirts so short their knickers are on show - and often most of their bare ass. It's awful.
I'm all for women having autonomy to choose how they dress but this isn't about women making a choice. It's about young girls and they should learn more self respect.
At least wearing trousers would keep them covered a bit but it doesn't entirely solve the problem. It's an option at our local schools and some of them wear trousers so tight it's unbelievable. Why do young girls feel the need to do this?

usedtobeaylis · 25/02/2026 10:08

Yep. Both boys and girls should be able to wear trousers, appropriate shorts, or frankly skirts. My brother went to a school where the formal boys uniform was a kilt. Who gives a fuck, imagine spending all your life greeting about what kids wear. Behaviour is a problem, clothes are not.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 25/02/2026 10:09

This was the same at my eldest’s school a few years ago. Boys were also not allowed to wear shorts as ‘hairy legs made the girls uncomfortable’.

This is the thing, though: once they're at high school, boys usually only have the option of trousers, and not shorts at all - unless for PE/sports.

It seems crazy that boys willingly accept they can't show their legs below the knee; yet some girls are crying discrimination and complaining when people don't want to see their pants (or any body parts that would normally be covered by 'traditional' pants)!

There are so many things in life where boys and men stomp over boundaries and act outrageously, arrogantly and appallingly - and they should be held to account every single time; but school uniforms seem to be one of the few cases where the reverse is true, and it's many of the girls who are behaving unacceptably - and unless we somehow believe that being female makes you automatically infallible, helpless, immature or too foolish to be able to understand and follow rules like the wise, responsible males can, then why on earth wouldn't ALL infringements be addressed, rather than focusing on the person responsible for it?

usedtobeaylis · 25/02/2026 10:10

The incoherence in trying to police teenage girls' clothes at school while living in society where people push porn, including schoolgirl girl porn, as a normal and healthy part of life is fucking insane.

CandiedPrincess · 25/02/2026 09:51

True.

At my kids school they also had embroidery on the front of the waistband which had to be visible at all times. And they did check!

That's a clever solution actually

@Theonlywayicanloveyouimmsure they’re probably tried that??!!!

You see it in my town all the time. Girls with skirts on so short you can see their butt cheeks. Teachers aren't allowed to say anything as it is " slut shaming" and then you get some parents' attitude that their daughters can wear what they want and it's other people's problem. It seems some people want to flash their bits but have nobody comment on it.
