Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

I get what you are saying, @Eastie77Returns - it is a really misogynistic message to give the girls and the boys that the boys are not responsible for their bad behaviour, and the girls are! And I say this as the mother of three sons, who would have got the sharp edge of my tongue if they had dared to suggest that the girls should dress ‘modestly’ because the boys can’t be expected to control themselves.

JayJayj · 26/02/2026 20:02

I’d tell them to stop employing peodophiles rather than telling girls that socks are sexy!

They have reinforced the skirt level but apparently girls arrive at school in the correct skirt and then roll it up during the day.

The girls rolling their skirts up should be given detention or whatever punishment they give for breaking school rules these days and told to unroll their skirt, rather than punishing all the girls with a change in uniform policy.

That being said, my school uniform was a skirt at knee length with black tights in winter, same skirt or summer dress of knee length with white socks in summer. The black tights in winter were welcome protection from the cold! So I personally can't understand why your daughter would prefer bare legs in the colder months!

It was like that when I was in secondary school in the 00,s? Skirts had to be worn with tights not socks. Doesn’t look very smart and I’ve never seen a woman in the workplace with a pencil skirt and socks on. Think about it

Tights - in summer? What madness is this?

A pencil skirt is not the same as a school uniform ffs (and here people would have bare legs, not tights, in warm weather). Girls here wear socks with their summer uniforms and look fine.

Beechtrees19 · 26/02/2026 20:05

It’s quite simple. Trousers should be made school uniform not skirts.

NoUsernameAvailableAgain · 26/02/2026 20:05

At my daughter’s school they are only allowed to wear the school skirt which is knee length/ just below the knee and tartan or trousers. It’s so hideous that 99% of the girls wear trousers. Problem solved!

Well that says to me that nothing has changed. I/we used to do that back in the 1960s! We didn't have "problem males" around at our school even though it was co-ed.

Importantpointsshouldbeaired · 26/02/2026 20:13

Forget the Skirts if the Girls won’t follow the dress code !! definitely introduce Trousers for all!! The Girls in a local school where I live wear Trousers and it makes a nice change!! Instead of Skirts that are all wonky and lob-sided 🤣🤣🤣which look awful. How times have changed I never used to tuck my skirt up to honest !!

Asuitablecat · 26/02/2026 20:13

They have to wear the (horrible) skirt in my school. But they roll it up, so it bunches round the waist. Then they cover it with a jumper, which is pulled tighter by hair bobbles.

Surely, if you have to walk upstairs with your hands puking your skirt down behind you, that's a health and safety issue.

Not only that, the skirts are pleated. When rolled up, they stick out, giving girls the presumably undesired effect of looking like toadstools.

Haven’t read the full thread

Just here to say SKORTS are the way forward.

More and more kids/teens clothing companies offer these. Surely a uniform version is possible.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/02/2026 09:26

My private convent school we had long pleated skirts though in 6th form you could wear shorter black skirts.

Wtaf though? I do agree some girls skirts are more like belts.

Commonly known as a fanny pelmet in Scotland.

Womaninhouse17 · 26/02/2026 20:38

Why ban socks though? I can't see why they can't wear socks and longer skirts. Have I missed something? (Answer is 'probably'.)

I think it’s the combination of knee high socks with short (possibly) rolled up skirts that causing the issue. Trying to enforce longer skirts is nearly impossible when the girls roll them up later. Denier tights or trousers seem the practical option but as always some push uniform boundaries more than others.

I will get my arse flamed for this but I feel sorry for the boys, having to walk behind girls with their bare arse cheeks in full view. What are they supposed to do? Where are they supposed to look? What if they get an involuntary erection, as pubescent boys often do? Are they supposed to wear blindfolds all day?
I have (now adult) sons and if I had word that one of my sons had been called a pervert for seeing young girls arses on display and caused an involuntary erection I would be down at the school kicking up a fuss.
Thankfully late 90s/2000s there was none of this nonsense. Who is looking out for the young boys who can end up feeling horribly embarrassed over things they have no control over just because girls want to attend school displaying what they had for breakfast?
Ill get my coat...

Well done for being brave !

its the latest thing to say girls can wear what they want and nobody should police etc etc. but if boys had their bums on show and/outline of penis on purpose etc they’d be uproar. The boys are blamed for just being present it seems.

It’s mad to think that some people are pushing h for girls to have their skirts so short and it’s the boys fault for being there and seeing it.

of course they’ll be a few gross comments - they’re teens!!but girls can be crude too and there are a lot of double standards.

slightly off topic but I find it uncomfortable when shows such as gogglebox glorify the CBeebies bedtime story with certain male actors(!) and we watch women salivating and making crude comments about them and their “bulge” etc. If this was men commenting on females in this way on TV - uproar.

girls in education should be dressed appropriately and educated about what is appropriate workplace attire. Unless they want to be pole dancers etc what other job would allow this dresscode? Girls should be taught to respect their bodies and body autonomy- not to flash themselves.

Ban skirts. Trousers or long shorts only

Think it’s the combo of tiny skirt, bum cheeks and high socks that make them look like a Britney look alike or something from Ann summers 🫣

Longer skirt could work if it was so long that rolling becomes too uncomfortable

illbetheresunorrain · 26/02/2026 20:52

what kind of socks are seen under a mini skirt??

FrozenFebruary · 26/02/2026 20:52

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/02/2026 08:11

It is awful that girls are being exposed to being limited because of how it makes men feel.

But at the same time, when I was at school if a male teacher entirely reasonably had told a girl her skirt was too short/underwear was showing the reaction would have been 'oh my god Mr Smith was looking up my skirt!' and utter chaos would have ensued. Tbh this would probably also have happened if Mr Smith had just been looking in her general direction and not said anything.

I suspect this has happened and is what the school are trying to avoid.

What does that have to do with socks??

Greenfinch7 · 26/02/2026 20:55

There are other countries that do not have these problems.

We should learn from them and abolish uniform, and stop making rules about what students should wear. Teachers should never mention or attempt to control a child's appearance- they should have their minds and attention on more important things

Eastie77Returns · 25/02/2026 08:16

It’s 17 degrees here today. DD feels overly warm at the best of times in her uniform and was pretty miserable pulling on her tights today!

Girls not being allowed to wear SOCKS so the teachers & boys don't get too sexually excited IS absolutely disgusting. Govenors would be informed & expected to read the riot act to the HT.

yes why exactly the country with the strictest rule on uniforms has the biggest problems. I remember in my country, some girls came with shorts or miniskirts. So what? Nobody pestered them. They pestered themselves into the boys with these clothes.

illbetheresunorrain · 26/02/2026 20:59

I am probably very thick or old or culture shocked: how can a sock be a temptation when the skirt is already too short. Or I am too innocent also? What is the relation between sock and short skirt

I'd simply refuse to wear tights on a warm day. A school CANNOT force someone to wear something that makes them too hot or too cold! It's like the stupid schools who tell the kids they can't take jumpers off. AAAAGH. Thankfully my son's school wasn't so stupid.

Why not suggest that the girls wear trousers or shorts if the poor boys can't cope with a bit of bare leg.

Honestly, it's pathetic.
