Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

It’s not really fair to put other people in the position where they have to police your skirt length.

because it’s either now they have to pull you aside and talk about showing your underwear and that minefield or ignore and get flashed pants 24/7.

so they’re enforcing tights as a compromise. detention still doesn’t stop teachers and students being accosted by students underwear

Can you/your DD suggest to the school that shorts are to be worn underneath skirts? Still shit but would eliminate the tights problem

My DD (reception age) likes to wear dresses to school, with socks in the summer. I ensure she wears cycling shorts underneath so no one can see her pants when she’s sitting crossed legged on the carpet etc. Works well.

The Deputy needs his hard drive checking

Oh god, here we go ... and such a short step to some excitable idiot at the school gate claiming they know his hard drive has been checked, and "Ooooo you'll never guess what they found!!", with the story embellished for each new goggle-eyed listener Hmm

If only the silliness was restricted to the kids, but at least it's easy to see where they get it from ...

I’ve missed 12 pages of comments as I was at the dentist😭 But just to clarify: I do support the school enforcing the uniform policy. However I think it’s unfair that all female pupils are being punished because of the behaviour of a few. I did not like the language used by the Deputy head who brushed aside the behaviour of boys who harrass and make derogatory comments to girls (he actually said “boys will be boys..”) and laser focused on girls.

Regarding trousers, DD doesn’t want to wear them and I don’t want to force her into them. She always wore knee high socks (no K-pop style bows!), an appropriate length skirt with black shorts underneath. All of her friends dress in the same way and she said it’s a few girls mainly in years 9-10 who dress incorrectly.

I’m a bit disturbed at some of the internalised misogyny on the thread including claims that all girls dress in short skirts to attract men?! I think there are plenty of girls who follow their friend’s behaviour or just want to dress like that without giving men a second thought. I’m not saying they should be allowed to attend school with bum cheeks hanging out. Any girl turning up to school like that should be made to change and punished appropriately.

I agree the messaging is all wrong. It should have focused solely on the rule-breakers among the girls and not even mentioned boys or male teachers.

This is something you need to tackle the school over as they need to learn from it going forward.

I also agree about questionable comments on this thread - it’s all part of the same problem.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/02/2026 12:22

Why don’t the girls who roll the skirts up just get given detentions every time they’re caught with the skirt rolled up?

Because they'll be inundated with parents insisting they're not going to allow their kids to do them, @Elektra1 ... see any thread on the subject on here

It's also as stupid comment because if the teacher was that way inclined he wouldn't be taking steps to stop the parade of visible young arses.

I said the same upthread. We can’t even challenge skirt length as student council said it was body shaming. We have parents complain - “no, I won’t buy a new skirt”, “how dare you comment on my child’s clothing”, “you shouldn’t be looking at their bums”.

Avantiagain · 25/02/2026 12:27

No one wants to see anyone else's underwear and that is what it should have been about.

Short skirts were not popular when I was teaching but those pupils that did wear them were spoken to by older female members of staff. It would have been more difficult for a male member of staff to say anything.

Since when do parents have any control over what goes on in the school day? It’s not so long since my children left secondary school and I’ve never heard of this

ClickBeat · 25/02/2026 11:21

Oh agreed it's funny how in an effort to rebel teenagers all end up looking the same!

But I just mean when I used to wear a very short skirt it wasn't really to impress boys or attract men it was because I wanted to look like I was fashionable and to feel part of my peer group.

I loved mini skirts too, but never so short as to show my knickers. I had great legs so enjoyed wearing them, and getting compliments (I’m only human). I have nothing against mini skirts per se but just think micro mini skirts should be left to ‘out of hours’ scenarios.

Avantiagain · 25/02/2026 12:33

I think the problem is now that so many parents will get involved. When I was at school you either sorted out your uniform when pulled up about it or accepted the consequences of ignoring warnings without dragging your parents into it.

Shadowhunter12 · 25/02/2026 12:36

The option of trousers isn’t always the easy fix that many seem to think it is. Often, if trousers are mandated, then the girls who tend to wear the exceptionally short skirts then opt for very tight/ low waisted/ ill fitting (too small) trousers and when they are crouching/ kneeling/ bending over you just get a lovely view of the gap between their jumper and their builders bum with thong top sticking out. Trust me, I’ve seen it all……….. no idea what the solution is!

Eastie77Returns · 25/02/2026 08:08

They have reinforced the skirt level but apparently girls arrive at school in the correct skirt and then roll it up during the day.

Then this is what parents should be annoyed about and should be raising with their daughters.

Because for some it seems the right for children to bare their arses at school is a key feminist issue.,..... In the US they fight for the right to bare arms, in the uk it is the right to bare arses.

Anyahyacinth · 25/02/2026 11:11

Well they did at Dover Girls Grammar...rolled up waistbands and over the knee socks held up with elastic bands. We also had indoor knickers on the uniform list and did athletics in a mini skirt kilt

Edited

I’m 55 too and they did my girls’ school too - hotpants, crazy short minis and cut off jean shorts.

Until one day the headmistress announced in assembly:

School is not a beach party” . Anyone coming to school in inappropriate clothing would have to change into a school tracksuit or go home.

No mention at all of male teachers - who are frankly irrelevant.

If clothing is inappropriate for school, it’s inappropriate across the board not for men in particular.

BunnyLake · 25/02/2026 12:40

Anyahyacinth · 25/02/2026 11:14

Then why be bothered by them?

I don’t want to see a male colleague’s dick half hanging out his fly either, but you do you, as they say.

YourWildAmberSloth · 25/02/2026 12:37

Then this is what parents should be annoyed about and should be raising with their daughters.

Exactly. And the persistently rule-breaking girls should be the ones in frame.

But this school seems quite slack at policing the skirt lengths. It’s a poor excuse that they’ve rolled them up during the day.

Lourdes12 · 25/02/2026 12:45

We didn’t wear uniform at school and never had this problem. We all wore jeans, jumpers or T-shirts. I think because the British school system is so strict on uniform policy the children feel a need to rebel agains it. You can tell by the way the teen aged girls dress at the weekend. Making them look like little office people during the week is going to come with some issues. I’m not against uniform, just saying

We used to do that decades ago as I am sure countless others have done too, we wore tights though. Rolling up skirts was banned of course and someone told the Sun newspaper and they did a salacious story on it.

BollyMolly · 25/02/2026 12:49

I’m not male and I’d be uncomfortable being able to see schoolgirls’ underwear.

Blame the girls that refuse to follow a simple rule, not boys or anyone else who shouldn’t have to see other peoples underwear.

We didn’t have a uniform either - which made it easier to wear minis and shorts to school if you think about it. Except we had rules about what would not be tolerated which were enforced more rigorously than this school.

Thatcannotberight · 25/02/2026 12:51

IMHO the girls are missing a trick. Don't they know the only way to wear thick black tights is with white Nike ankle/quarter socks? 🤣

toiletpaperthief · 25/02/2026 12:51

50 years of feminism and fighting for womens rights out of the window. Now it's all about making men happy. Next complaint would be about girls hair showing and making men uncomfortable.

It's obligatory to listen to Parent Voice. They are actively canvassed for Ofsted.
