In summer no, they really give sustenance on a very hot day Vichyssoise being a good example. Adore french onion soup with croutons. So good on a chilly day.

I can’t eat french onion soup ven I. Situations where I don’t need it to fill me up (as a starter for eg) as it does not agree with my digestive system.

I concede the point. Not all thin soups are bowls of sadness!

In case anyone wants to see the figures for the by-elections. Turn out was awful in all three:

Zetland Ward by-election

Alison Barnes, Liberal Democrats 446 votes.
Igraine Gray, The Conservative Party - 62 votes.
Michael Manning, Reform UK - 119 votes.
Mitchell Rynn, Labour Party - 191 votes.
Brian Marc Teasdale, Green Party - 65 votes.

Turnout was 26.78%

Van ward

Jeff Grenfell, Plaid Cymru – 374 votes (43% of total valid votes cast)
Russell Larke, Reform UK – 246 votes (28%)
Matthew Ferris, Welsh Labour – 231 votes (26%)
Tony Potts, Welsh Liberal Democrats – 12 votes (1%)

The turnout at the by-election was 25.87% and one ballot paper was rejected.

Stoneygate

Green Party: 1,195 (30.4%, +22.9)
Labour: 1,089 (27.7%, –12.8)
One Leicester: 638 (16.2%, new)
Independent (Noor): 453 (11.5%, new)
Conservative: 327 (8.3%, –15.3)
Reform UK: 106 (2.7%, new)
Liberal Democrats (Asit Sodha): 62 (1.6%, –5.9)
Independent (Barker): 61 (1.6%, new)

Turnout: 27.75%

Yes. When only 1 in 4 can be arsed to vote, you have to wonder where the Reform revolution is formenting ?

If you apply a simple razor that 25% of all shouty bollocks come from the 75% that don't vote, you can see why the reality falls short of the hype.

Farages entire USP has been to get people who didn't vote to vote. However the flaw in that plan, is that people who didn't vote are much more likely to not vote again in the future.

PandoraSocks · 20/02/2026 14:53

"A source at GB News told the Guardian that Farage had characterised the complaint as “that is just Matt being Matt”. 🙄

Talking of Goodwin, there is a poll of Gorton and Denton out, conducted by Omnisis.

It shows:

🟢 The Greens on 22%

🟣 Reform UK on 20%

🔴 Labour on 18%

🤷‍♀️ Undecideds on 31%

Only 452 people were polled.

So basically completely up in the air!

DuncinToffee · 20/02/2026 14:54

Re Zetland ward, Reform withdraw support for its candidate over offensive social media posts and he has now left the party

Their vetting process continues to go swimmingly

I love soup and have a soup maker. Tomato and red pepper sounds lovey - o think I need to try that.

what low turnout at those elections. But im glad no reform seats were gained!

DS and I are both back home
now - outcome is he was diagnosed with an anoxic seizure due to blood pressure drop - likely due to dehydration due to a n immune response to a viral infection.

Still better than GOP vetting ...

The predicted extinction of the Tory party continues. Eventually they will realise that they signed the cheque for Brexit and are now liable it's bounced.

Bear in mind postal votes that have already been submitted.

True. But generally they will come from people who can read.

And write.

SerendipityJane · 20/02/2026 16:03

Slight distraction as a neighbour has just posted that they have been blessed to welcome a baby boy into the world. Absolute scenes on Whatsapp 😀.

Raven08 · 20/02/2026 16:10

@itsgettingweird
Glad your ds is feeling a tad better x
Not that you ever need a recipe for soup, but I just make a sofritto base (or use a ready made frozen one), soften in olive oil for a bit, then add a chopped whole red pepper, clove of garlic, jar of tomato passata (or you could roast some tomatoes, de skin and blend them) then add 1 litre vegetable boullion/stock, simmer for 30 mins and voila.
Its very tasty.
(For the butternut squash one I just add a whole chopped squash instead of peppers and tomatoes and a teaspoon of turmeric).

Alison Barnes is smiling at the camera. She has mid-length brown hair and large brown glasses. She is wearing a chunky yellow necklace and a yellow rosette.

Lib Dems win Zetland by-election after Reform controversy

Reform had pulled support for its Redcar and Cleveland Council candidate over offensive posts.

Be interesting to read the runes on that one.

Mike Manning still appeared on the ballot paper for Reform, despite him saying he wished he could withdraw, because it was too late to field another candidate. He finished third after Labour.

When we receive the actual number, we can fold that in the the %age of Reform "voters" who are uber thick. Valuable data for anyone campaigning.

Their tiny minds really will be blown if Restrain start to field candidates in their area, too.

That's unfair. A non zero number of voters will confuse Reform and Restore on the ballot paper.

To the extent that I am wondering if the Electoral Commission might get involved.

Who remembers the "Literal Democrats" ?

119 votes, I posted the results upthread.

BestIsWest · 20/02/2026 17:18

Talking of soup (and by elections) I had a very nice bowl of cawl for lunch. Not usually a fan of lamb but this was tasty. I was pleased to see that it came with a chunk of Caerphilly cheese as traditional.

Are you intimating that Resore and Reform voters are stupid?

Not all, obviously. But

Michael Manning (Reform UK): 119 votes → 13.5%

That's 13.% that are terminally thick. Pissing their vote away whilst no doubt whining that nobody cares about them.
