60 cases in London, where vaccinations are lowest in the country.

I had it as a child just before the vaccine was introduced and remember parts of it well as it was much more serious than the common other childhood illnesses of the time. I was in a semi darkened room at home, the doctor came to visit several times, with the district nurse visiting on other days, and my mother and grandmother giving me cooling bedbaths. Such a nasty headache.

At 70 you are eligible. I’m 61 so not eligible. I might try to convince them though.

Do please. I didn't realise your age but my sister did get a booster post shingles before 65 and was offered the top up.

@warmpinkshawl (cosy name!) The ability to look things up is a mixed blessing though. The availability of the Internet can be a PITA for doctors with self-diagnosing patients, but it has helped some people identify problems that rather complacent doctors have missed.

Seems like a bit of listening and respect for the other's knowledge on both sides is the best way forward. I don't know about in the UK now, but Dutch doctors are taught to listen to a mother's gut instinct about her baby as a valuable tool, although not always to take it as the defining factor.

I’m a 64 baby and was vaccinated for measles. Not as a baby, but later.

Maybe I wasn’t vaccinated later as I’d already had it ? I don’t know. Were you also in Wales ? As if so the roll out would have probably been the same. Perhaps it was an option for all children once it came in. Maybe I had it even though I’d had measles, but it would have had to be after age 4-5ish as that is when I caught measles. I remember having measles quite clearly , and I remember some of my vaccinations but there must be a lot I’ve forgotten. I think we must have also had smallpox vaccinations ? I have a memory of feeling really rough after a vaccine and my Dad talking to me about how they worked, and in my mind it was the smallpox vaccine.

I was t in Wales then, but I imagine the schedules would be similar. I had the smallpox vaccination because we spent time with family in Wales.

I have a DC who has a Masters in Control of Infectious Diseases from LSHTM. This is a world-renown course at a world-leading (in that field) institution. She got a distinction. Everyone, everyone, she works with, or has ever worked with, vaccinates their children. As a recommendation, that's good enough for me.

EBearhug · 23/02/2026 19:14

I used to work in the library at LSHTM.

Watched The Mirror Cracked From Side To Side, ITV player. Agatha Christie. I've also read the book.
