If I passed you on a narrow path, would I be able to smell fabric softener down wind?

Just been on a walk and struck by how many people you pass don't smell of perfume, instead they smell of eau de lenor
is there something that you do/aspire to? How much of the stuff do you use to make it so strong?
I don't mind it in laundry. Just not my signature scent™️

Best Vegan & Cruelty-Free Fabric Softeners (UK)

"Many brands of supermarket-bought fabric softener contain rendered animal fat."

Lard on your clothing.

Goinggonegone · 15/02/2026 15:19

No. I dont use it because it contains cow and/or sheep fat (not lanolin).

Ecover is ok I think. That's the one I point out to my OH when he complains I don't use fabric conditioner, and tell him he's more than welcome to wash his own clothes. Funnily enough he loses interest at that point.

But in my experience the people who use fabric softener use it to cover up those smells. If something is clean, it shouldn’t have to be made to smell clean with artificial fragrance.

I thought people used it to make their clothes soft?!

I think bo smells better than those scented washing products. And is certainly less harmful to inhale.

My friends house, you approach it on foot, and all you can smell (outside!!) is the washing products. Everywhere she and her family of 5 go smells of those products. If my dd sits on their sofa, her hair and clothes smell of it.

by builder, if he works in a room, the washing product scent is there for hours afterwards.

give me bo any day!

only on Mumsnet is BO better than laundry products 😆

HudALledrith · 15/02/2026 15:30

Are Ecover products vegan? - Ecover

I think Fairy is one of the stronger smelling washing powders!

Yes, I used it only once! The smell was overpowering and my husband was tortured with itching!!

DappledThings · 14/02/2026 11:53

I have never smelt fabric conditioner or washing powder on anyone. Or smelt it on bedding anywhere I have stayed. Hardly ever smell perfume or aftershave either.

I wish I was you! Most people used to smell of 'washing detergent but now it's fabric conditioner or cannabis. I stayed with dd1 a few months ago and had to put some of my clothes between me and the bedding as I couldn't sleep with the smell. I stayed there last week and she hadn't used fabric conditioner and had done a double rinse on the bedding so all was good!

Everything I used to buy from Ebay stunk of it! I'm allergic to it.

Anndalouzier · 15/02/2026 15:38

Oh God, cannabis is the worst. I'd rather smell of Benson and Hedges.

If you have carpets or upholstered furniture or laminate surfaces in your home you are awash in gases.

My settee is 33 years old and the flooring over 25 years old. I did buy a new mattress a couple of years ago - it was Warren Evans and no off gassing.

‘! I’ve had a few people in work tell me they know when I’ve been in a room as they can faintly smell mine (comfort pure‘

Errrrr -weren’t they just being tactful ?

What do you mean being tactful?

slonestranger · 14/02/2026 12:17

I have this constantly with older family members who insist on fabric conditioner and air fresheners, both of which trigger my asthma.

Yes I would prefer the stink of shit in the bathroom which will dissipate with a window open, to the fug of air freshener which sets of at least 2 of my kids and my own asthma.

I can't say I like the smell of BO on the tube, but it doesn't affect me in the same way as perfume and fabric conditioner.

Dm has finally stopped using a spray air freshener unless she is not expecting me. They make me feel sick and give me a headache. I hope I don't smell, I bathe regularly and use an unscented soap and antiperspirant.

liveforsummer · 15/02/2026 16:05

I like my clothes to smell nice but not a fan of fabric softener so use scent boosters instead (fairy ones) mumsnet hate these too though. No idea how a clean smell can be offensive but there we are.

In other words a scent wafts after you and its quite strong to linger in the room after you've gone. Quite intrusive in some ways.

No. They said they liked the smell. Not the type of women to sugarcoat if they didn’t like something either. Believe it or not, outside of MN people actually like the smell of fabric conditioner.

Britishtrees · 15/02/2026 16:24

I visited a relative in the US last year. She lives in a ‘naice’ neighbourhood. I smelt skunk as we strolled along. I said it’s seems to be everywhere worldwide nowadays , sigh. She said you’re smelling a real skunk. Now I get it…

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 15/02/2026 16:25

You must have an incredible sense of smell. I've not once noticed it on anyone but I'm often almost intoxicated by some men who smell like they've bathed in a barrel of aftershave

ThiagoJones · 15/02/2026 16:26

Playingvideogames · 15/02/2026 14:52

But in my experience the people who use fabric softener use it to cover up those smells. If something is clean, it shouldn’t have to be made to smell clean with artificial fragrance.

But fabric conditioner is used in the wash. Alongside washing powder. So realistically, anything smelling of fabric conditioner is likely to be clean. No one is soaking their clothes on fabric conditioner so cover up the fact that they’re dirty, that would be mental.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/02/2026 16:28

I don't like fabric softener (or the boosters) - to me they feel like something that was created by accident that they then needed to find a need for. I dry my washing outside in the sun and breeze and I prefer that smell.

But I live in a very small village and on some days when I go out for my run, the whole place smells of fabric softener because people have used it in their wash and then hung their washing out on the line!

Happyjoe · 15/02/2026 16:28

Oh, talking of gassing, reminded me. I bought a memory foam topper for a very hard mattress, it turned the painted wall luminous green where the mattress was pushed against the wall. It had already been airing for a few days before.
Nice!
We do put ourselves through it eh?

What's the MN view on room fresheners? I don't have them because of the cat.

im confused. Was it weed or a skunk. We have tons of actually skunks in our very nice area so we do smell them on occasion. Weed happens too, but not as often and you can tell the difference.

liveforsummer · 15/02/2026 16:30

I think there must be lots of sensitive noses. I can smell my own laundry products in wafts as my clothes are very close to my nose but I never notice anyone else’s. Ots not as strong as perfume, Bo. Smoke/cannabis etc

Mumofyellows · 15/02/2026 16:31

You probably would with me, one of my colleagues always tells me I smell of clean washing which I will take quite happily. Love a bit of lenor.

ginasevern · 15/02/2026 16:36

Fabric conditioner contains non-biodegradable, petroleum-based chemicals and quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats") that pollute waterways and kill aquatic life. These products also often use plastic packaging, contribute to poor indoor air quality and can reduce the lifespan of clothing and towels. So that's why I don't use it. Properly washed clothes didn't used to stink before it was invented. The ad guys have cleverly convinced women that they're sluts or "less than" if they don't buy the evil stuff. Money, money, money!
