Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Sex with a Tory. Wasn't for me.

Ugh. Vague mental images of him grunting about the disbanding of the Monday Club mid-coitus and having a poster of Thatcher over his bed.

Shufflebumnessie · 09/02/2026 13:18

I never even made it to the proper slopes! My Guide pack took us dry-slope skiing when I was about 14 (I'm now 46!). I was absolutely terrified and manage to break 2 fingers (my mum didn't believe me for days, but that's another story!!). I have absolutely no desire to every try anything skiing related again.

Sailing on anything smaller than a super yacht!!! I was about 11 & my parents signed me up for a week long sailing course. I had no desire to sail but I guess it was holiday childcare. We were sailing Toppers, the instructors were crap & just left us to figure it out for ourselves. There was a storm coming in & they still took us out in the sea, the waves seems like tidal waves! On the final day they took us out what seemed like miles, told us to make it back to the harbour on our own and sailed off. There was a huge ferry coming in that we were way too close to, none of us had any idea what we were doing & I honestly thought I was going to die!

Paintball. I honestly can not fathom how people enjoy it. It hurts so much. I was shot directly in the forehead (even though I was waving my flag to show I was out of the game), I had a headache for days.

Also, quad biking & Horse riding. I do not need to try either ever again.

As you can tell, I'm not an outdoor or sporty adult.

I've never been skiing but it's always been on my bucket list. After this thread I don't think I'm going to bother 😂

Skiing is a young persons game - never start it over 35.

Gotback · 09/02/2026 13:19

Cruise
Skiing
Laser quest
Hen do

Laser thing I just left after 5 minutes, the others I just wished I could leave after 5 minutes.

SpryLilacSnake · 09/02/2026 13:19

Snorkelling - I just don't get it! I love looking at fish but the same can be achieved by popping a mask on and just taking a moment to come up and breathe once in a while without an uncomfortable mouthpiece and the risk of inhaling water if you go at the wrong angle.

Andouillette. Ordered by mistake in Paris. Smells like actual shit.

This!!!!! Horrific experience 🤢🤢🤢

Runnersandtoms · 09/02/2026 13:21

Most of these outdoors things I've done and enjoyed and would do again. Not really interested in skiing (done once aged 12) but would do it if I had to.

Eating oysters would be mine. Had one once and never want another.

Gloopsy · 09/02/2026 13:21

Marrying. Terrifying, claustrophobic and panic attack inducing. Never again.

Piknik · 09/02/2026 13:22

Skiing - love love love
Scuba - loved although only done a few times
White water rafting in Yosemite - loved
Rollercoasters - love

But mountainous driving/hairpin bends and sheer drops now dictate where I will and won't go when we're on holiday. Driving round Sa Calobra in Mallorca was the worst thing I have ever done and it still makes me feel sick remembering it. I have never liked mountain driving much yet somehow managed to drive myself up and down the ski resort in the Sierra Nevada when I lived in Granada, Spain, but Sa Calobra was a whole different league. It's one of those roads where once you start, there is no going back and it just gets worse and worse. If it hadn't been so narrow I would have abandoned the car and walked a full 24 hours rather than finish that drive.

That is probably wise because it is a more injury-prone sport than most, but if you are really drawn to it, as long as you are moderately fit, it is not too late. Just start on gentle slopes, wear a helmet, go with a patient instructor, and do not go too fast.

I learned to ski properly later in life and I really enjoy it.

AlleycatMarie · 09/02/2026 13:23

Skiing and ice skating!! I’ve no balance!!!

Willowkins · 09/02/2026 13:23

Also skiing - I ended upsidedown in a snow drift more that once. Seems that was the only way I could stop.
Plus there was the time I went down one of those huge waterslides with a hole at the end - I went under, lost my glasses and my blood pressure went through the roof.
I have done caving and abseiling though, several times and loved it.

Ooh interesting. I've never fancied it at all but I only ever hear people saying they are wonderful, you'd love it. What did you not like?

It was nice, but I’m not cut out for package holidays. I found the excursions very limiting and would have preferred to explore places on my own and in more depth. It also felt very sedentary, with the cruise leader constantly assuring us there ‘won’t be too much walking’. I wanted to walk to help burn off some of the excessive food they kept plying us with.

This was a small-ish European river cruise. I enjoyed it, but was happy when it ended and knew I never wanted to do it again. One of those huge ocean liners is my idea of a nightmare holiday. I’d hate being out at sea with 5000 other people.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/02/2026 13:24

Climbing/Go Ape rope places. I’ve had to do it twice to keep 2 kids happy. Never again.

Those Flyng Fox fair rides. Can’t After that chair broke in Edinburgh (enormous one at Xmas) and that poor man died in front of hundreds of people after hanging on for a few seconds. So tragic. Not worth it. Managed it once since and it was traumatic.

FullLondonEye · 09/02/2026 13:25

Oysters.

Snorkelling.

Water skiing.

Water parks. I've always been a good swimmer but aged about 10 at a water park I had a really weird experience. It was busy, there were loads of kids going down all the rides but when I went down, excitedly, I came off with my thighs and bum cut to shreds. I could feel the surface of the flume really rough and spiky against my skin. No-one else had this and my mum said I was making it up, it couldn't be the ride because everyone was fine so it must have been something else I'd done - but still couldn't explain why I'd started there with healthy, smooth thighs and bum skin but had come off the ride all cut up and bleeding. Just me. Her attitude to it upset me as much as the bleeding legs. My brother was on it right behind me and was fine. That was my first, highly anticipated visit to a water park and also my last. My poor kids I'm sure would love to go but it's not happening, at least not with me.

Horror films, or films with graphic violence. There's enough going on in the world right now that's actually real, I don't need to spend my leisure time watching made up content of this nature. My nervous system is also greatly benefitting from this decision.

I'm with you, I hate horror films or anything remotely gory.

Braindraining · 09/02/2026 13:26

Just remembered snails, just NO.

A rollercoaster. Wasn't even one of the really big ones. That feeling in your stomach when it does the drops.... man that HURTS. I cannot stand the feeling, just cannot endure it. It's the worst feeling in the world - why do people like it??

And the whole thing of wanting to die, but not being able to get off till the ride has ended, when time stretches infinitely and 90 seconds feels like 90 hours.

Never again. Not even for DD. Not for £5million. Never.

I didnt mind rollercoasters and we'd gone to hull fair one year (many years ago)

I'd said id do a ride each with the kids as long as the others stood in one spot and didnt move (they where young teens) until we'd got off-no wandering off

I'd just got off one ride with ds1 when ds2 tugged my arm and said he wanted to go on a ride with me

We where straight on,sat down, buckled in and waited the few minutes until it started

The fucker flew forward (going up and down at the same time) leaving my stomach behind-it was about a minute before it stopped

I'd just caught my breath when it flew backwards, leaving my head in one spot,my body flying backwards and the contents of my stomach on the floor

I've never been on a ride since-you couldn't pay me enough

It doesn't sound that bad,but it really was-it was the speed, the going up and down and then flying backwards that did it-it seemed to go on for a lifetime

(Of course the kids thought this was hilarious and had set their phones up to take as many photos as they could so my horrified, vomiting face ended up on fb)

Never ever again

impressivelycunty · 09/02/2026 13:27

Climbing a Mayan pyramid when it used to be allowed- going up was hard work but fuck me going back down was terrifying and I cried the whole way. Also potholing on a PGL holiday, never forgave my parents for that one.

White water rafting on the Nile.
I’ve always been into extreme sports but this one scared the life out of me. I got thrown out of the raft coming down a rapid and when I came up, the raft was over my head. I was only under it for a matter of seconds but it felt like a lifetime and I genuinely thought I would drown.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Not on the Nike though, in a river in Class IV rapids in the States. I love it too much to stop rafting though!

TroysMammy · 09/02/2026 13:27

Preparing and cooking dog fish, aka huss or rock salmon. Dear God, the smell. I was retching constantly.

Eat a kebab. I had gastroenteritis from eating a dodgy one and 40 years later I can just about look at the meat turning on a spit.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 09/02/2026 13:27

Some things twice because Im too stupid to learn that they are a bad idea the first time:

Ski-ing, did a week while I was 19 and loved it, then went with DH 10 years later, and ended up on the wrong slope, it took us so long to get to the bottom that someone had to come and help us - mortifying

Cannabis - again once when I was young and the second time with DH in Amsterdam, I picked a fight because he wasnt talking to me (he eventually admitted he couldn't string a sentence together 😂) and after numerous goes up and down the stairs unable to find our room the lady in reception sent someone to help us. I woke up convinced I'd wet the bed (I hadn't) 😳

Nadi - met some really lovely people but very dangerous at night (someone literally jumped out the bushes at us) and filthy, I remember passing rotten dog carcasses on the side of the road.

Central Luxor - booked a private tour and the two guides spend most of the time shoo-ing people away and stopping us being pick pocketed, it was worth it to see valley of the kings etc but never again.
