Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Hellvellyn via Striding Edge. Been up from Thirlmere several times but thought we should do it the hard way once. It was a sunny, dry, day (would have been even more terrifying if the stones were wet underfoot) a queue of people behind and the woman in front of me was having a panic attack and having to be coaxed on by her partner. There also seemed to be some sort of mountain rescue going on just below, as if someone had fallen.

Not to scare you further but people do fall off striding edge and die...

See, I quite liked caving/potholing. I'm scared of heights but obviously not claustrophobic. Much better than abseiling/skiing/Go Ape. Shudder.

I never understand the hate for Malta. It's one of my favourite holidays that me and DH have been on!

Same. We went recently and I would def go back to explore the other half if the island!!

Childbirth. Pethadine slowed down labour, an anethesist "Couldn't be found" apparantly so no epidural and I discovered a previously unknown allergy to gas and air.

"It won't make you throw up" said the doctor, so I took another toke and projectile demonstrated all over her and the midwife that yes, in fact, it did.

So nearly 9 pound DD was born using forceps. I had third degree tears, no pain relief, even when being stiched up afterwards and thankfully am now too old to ever do that again.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who goes through that more than once.

Hot Air Balloon. I'd really didnt enjoy it.

Aluna · 09/02/2026 15:33

Love skiing and ice skating, don’t love fair rides

rumred · 09/02/2026 15:35

Stinking bishop cheese - beyond vile, I spat it out (during a wedding). Unbelievably bad.
Escape room - strangers running around like headless chickens.
Egypt. So many bad experiences, too many to list. Never again.
Line dancing - went twice, just dull and embarrassing. Everyone else knew what they were doing. I was told to just shuffle.

I've never been skiing but it's always been on my bucket list. After this thread I don't think I'm going to bother 😂

If you fancy trying it you could give cross country skiing a go. They have easy trails that genuinely are easy with only gentle, small slopes. I would never attempt downhill skiiing again but would happily do cross country

Circuit training. I was 18, fit as anything because I was a rock climber (at quite a high standard), but even so I never had much in the way of upper body strength. The training involved squats, star jumps, running lengths of the gym - so far so good. Then they said "leap frog with your partner the length of the gym". I couldn't get over his back and when it was his go, my knees buckled. Went back to climbing and never looked back (nor down).

Eiffel Tower. I screamed and cried like a baby all the way to the top then walked down. I guess I’m scared of heights and don’t trust industrial age engineering.

unbelievablybelievable · 09/02/2026 15:40

Segway.

Got told during the tutorial it was impossible to run yourself over as they have an automatic stop if you fall off.

No points for guessing who managed to keep one foot on when falling, thus preventing the auto-stop and running myself over, causing a massive hematoma needing hospital treatment 🙈

NEVER again!

I had a chalazion removed, well two actually in 2020. Due to covid restrictions i went alone and waited about 6hrs until it was my turn. Seeing that scalpel near my eyeball, the pain, the fact that I was sitting alone getting more scared. The whole thing was so traumatic. If I ever needed it done again, I'll be going private.

My ex boss flew a 2 seater plane. Offered me a trip up and it was lovely. But coming back to the air field he thought it would be hilarious to do tricks in the air. I nearly vomited and it put me off forever

Cycling tour around New York, the guide was a lunatic and definitely wanted us all dead!

Did a Cycling tour round Amsterdam! What with the other cyclists, the traffic and the trams never ever again terrifying!

Redcrayons · 09/02/2026 15:41

fly in a light aircraft.
we flew from NY to Boston on a 6 seater plane. I had no idea how much proper planes smooth out turbulence till I sat in this tiny plane. It was not long after JFK JNR had crashed and died on the same route. I was completely terrified.

i like to think I’m a adventurous give anything a go once person, but nothing could ever tempt me to go pot holing or caving. I don’t know what the difference is, but I won’t be doing either.

Yes I read about the number of fatalities the day after.....😮

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/02/2026 15:41

Just googled the Nutty Putty, someone died there!

I did I think it was white water rafting at Lea Valley. Two or three of the men with me got thrown off it and went under the raft, I stayed stock still to avoid the same fate. I learned afterwards someone had died there before. I did enjoy it though, quite exhilarating.

Octopus.

Oh I like octopus, with garlic and herb butter sauce.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/02/2026 15:43

Oh also paragliding. I liked it when it didn’t move when up in the air but when the breeze got hold of it and made it move. I was petrified. You’re only sitting on a thin strip of metal too.

Anywhere with fatalities I’ll Google from now on just to avoid the same fate.

Climbing up Ayers Rock many decades ago (it's now been correctly renamed Uluru and also it's now, quite rightly, forbidden to walk up it).
There was a steady stream of people going up and down, with only one chain to hold onto. Once I'd started up, I felt obliged to continue because there were loads of people behind me. Once at the top there was an amazing view - but going down was even more terrifying than going up! My legs were like jelly and I was desperately trying not to panic.

nondrinker1985 · 09/02/2026 15:46

Skating - did something to my knees
a threesome - tried it once didn’t quite go ahead with it walked out thank god!
pot holing - terrifying
abseiling - jumped off the side and sustained a head injury
going out just cos I’ve been invited - learning to say No has been liberating! Although worried I won’t have any friends left

Frugalgal · 09/02/2026 15:47

Rollercoaster type rides 😬

WheresMyHatGone · 09/02/2026 15:48

Goats cheese. It tastes like goats smell.

BunnyLake · 09/02/2026 15:49

Horse riding. Terrible. Much scarier than you realise when it starts to speed up its pace. Went once about 40 year’s ago, very excited to try it. Came home near traumatised, never ever again 😟😫

HUNGRY4MORE · 09/02/2026 15:50

I've done most of these in my younger days and enjoyed them.

I've tried:

Caving/potholing,
Rollercoasters 🎢
Horse riding, riding a camel and an elephant.
Paragliding
Flying in a 2 seater light aircraft and glider
Eating oysters, crickets, frog legs and snails (still do/would)
Been a passenger on a motorbike doing 160mph
Climbing up a mountain with rusty old iron steps cut into the side, and some missing, plus the spindly single thin rail was more missing than present, 🤣
I've been up snowdon in my youth, and the foothills by horse,
Zip slides, go ape, and various assault courses
Scuba diving, boating, snorkeling
Turkish massage
Camping inc at -5°C
Yoga, pilates.
Paintball/laserquest, and a few others that I've forgotten whilst typing all this out!

Also, roller skating and ice skating I used to love, but I haven't done either in years.

I'd do all of them again if I could, but I'm not physically able anymore.

Never tried skiing, and never want to try or smell andoillette sausage after reading this thread.

One thing I've done twice, and would never do again is getting married, or even living with someone.

As much as I love my current dh, I'd never want to have to try and learn to live with someone else once he's gone.

One thing I tried once and hated is Grünkohl. 🤢
I had it in Germany, and it was like what I imagine eating tobacco would be like. It was awful and I only finished it to be polite.

I think it's called curly kale in the UK, but I've not dared to try it in case it is the same 😂😱
