Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

Ice skating.

BrendaSmall · 09/02/2026 14:46

Ride on a camel!
Actually, the ride itself wasn’t too bad, it was just when the camel stood up and then laid down 🤣🤣

I absolutely love scuba diving

Unless there’s a ski lift for non skiers up and back down!

Don’t rely on the ski lift taking you back down!

I loved skiing but one day it was so misty you couldn’t see a thing. Went up a lift with DH and DSs, I knew the way down was steep and difficult as well as no visibility; what I could see was very scary and I said I would go back down in the lift. When we got out at the top there was a sign saying ‘no descents by lift’.

I immediately vomited.

A very slow descent creeping down and losing DS1 on the way (later found).

But it didn’t put me off skiing.

Zip lining, did it in Costa Rica, hated every second of it. I’m not afraid of heights I would have hated it if it was six feet off the ground. The very thought of caving makes me anxious, I can’t watch it on TV, I would never consider doing it.

Caving. Signed up in the first week of uni in a moment of madness. Terrifying, cold, wet & dark.

I had my first panic attack on the walk to
the cave. The instructors wouldn’t let me carry on 😂. I had no idea I was scared until then!

Apart from caving, I tried abseiling and wouldn’t do that again. Scary and uncomfortable/painful

Oh my god - that’s not good at all! Well done on making it down

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/02/2026 14:49

Yes, mine is ski-ing as well. But I've done it more than once, I've done three ski-ing holidays and had practically private lessons in the third one and got up to doing wide red runs.

But I still didn't enjoy it, and I can't say as I haven't given it a good go. I don't really like snow, cold weather or heights or falling over, so it was always going to be a stretch! I don't like spending all the money when I could be somewhere warm, I don't like wearing loads of layers and hate ski boots and the equipment, and lifts (argh) I hate the constant possibility of going arse over tit even when you are just walking round the town, and I usually came back ill, knackered and feeling like I need another proper holiday. The mountains are beautiful but I'd rather admire them from a distance. Preferably from about 1000 miles away, and on my TV set at home, nice and warm, watching people who are very good at ski-ing.

I wish I hadn’t googled the Nutty Putty. That’s going to give me nightmares.

Me neither, I’m my own worst enemy sometimes.

ShakyBake · 09/02/2026 14:51

Horse riding. My horse was horrible and cruel and I was constipated for 2 weeks after and had to be prescribed a laxative by doctor for first time in my life and partly pooed on kitchen floor because I couldn't make it to bathroom in time

Closely followed by (and I have mentioned this before on here) the 'real life Coronation Street experience'. Kevin Webster swore and threw a spanner at me

Zumba

Me too. A friend's daughter raved about it and it sounded brilliant (I'm a regular gym user, so very fit and this sounded like an additional way of keeping up my fitness).

I was unutterably CRAP at it. It was embarrassing.

Fifthtimelucky · 09/02/2026 14:51

Smoking.

When I was 14 my best friend and I bought a pack of 10 no. 6 to smoke at the cinema (it was the 1970s).

I felt sick and had a nosebleed!

I have always been very relieved that I had such an extreme reaction as, despite much teasing from my friends, I never wanted to do it again.

Shodan · 09/02/2026 14:53

Tandem paragliding. I was terrified, didn't open my eyes until I was about 5 feet off the ground. I felt sorry for the instructor who was with me- he tried so hard to make it a good experience for me.

Tower of Terror at Disney World- ds1 convinced me to go on, saying it wasn't 'that bad'. I have a crippling fear of heights (see also example one). He said afterwards, in awed tones, that he'd never actually seen anyone go green before.

Climbing Snowdon (I know, I know- but I have a stubborn streak that refuses to 'give in' to the afore-mentioned crippling fear of heights. It never works, sadly, but I keep trying.) Had a panic attack lasting (I'm told) an hour. Ds1 was phoning mountain rescue. Eventually he said he'd carry me down, but my fear of my children getting hurt (even though they were now grown adults) overcame my fear of heights and I managed to scramble down. Many strangers were unbelievably kind to me that day.

And yoga. I found it immensely tedious, someone's nose kept whistling during the quiet bit, and then my phone went off despite me thinking I'd put it on silent.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/02/2026 14:53

When DD1 wanted to do Go Ape for a birthday treat I roped in (literally) another parent who was happy to go up there with them with DH as I was horrified by the whole idea of it. I would have frozen going up the first ladder as my legs just refuse to work.

I have been up mountains (after being assured that there are no narrow ridges or steep descents). But the last one I went up (Pen y Fan) I was crying on the way up with fear at the thought of having to get down again and worrying about getting stuck. I'm like a cat up a tree, I can get up there... The emotional rollercoaster is absolutely exhausting, more than the actual walk. It was absolutely fine in the end but I was so glad to be down.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 09/02/2026 14:54

Those rides that lift you up, hold you there, then drop you about 60 foot, like a giant frog hopper.

I didn't have a heart condition getting on, but I'm sure I'd developed one by the time I got off.

You met my Ex husband then 😆

Abseiling. Off a 300 ft cliff somewhere in Western Australia. I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking, since I hate heights. I panicked and didn’t step off as instructed, in order to be in a seated position on the ropes. Ended up upside down; head facing the ground, feet facing the top of the cliff, looking up at the group of people standing on the cliff edge waiting for their turn. People at the bottom shouting up to me “you’re fine Totally, you’re not gonna die” etc. I don't know how long I stayed suspended like that, because I froze and couldn’t bring myself to pull up into an upright position, but I can tell you that I wasn’t planning my next abseiling trip.

Apart from absolutely shitting myself (unbelievably not literally) I had shame and embarrassment to add to my woes, because I was keeping the other people in our party waiting, and just generally being a bit lame and incompetent.

The descriptions of envelopes whilst caving are making me feel ill just thinking about it.

Fodencat · 09/02/2026 14:59

Drinking a bottle of Southern Comfort in 1981. How ill did I feel

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/02/2026 14:59

Anything to do with caving is utterly appalling to me. Heights, dark, trapped, water, small spaces. It would be utterly pointless to try.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/02/2026 14:59

I hated all the very big, fast young men pounding away

For a moment I thought that was in response to the people who mentioned anal.

Thanks for that, I snorted out loud and now have tea up my nose Grin

Nezukokamado · 09/02/2026 15:03

Wow so many for skiing! I was offered a ski holiday this year paid for but I didn't fancy it. Happy with my decision now!

FrizzyFrizbee · 09/02/2026 15:04

Go ape. Did it once, it was enough.

Cocaine. (Well, twice.) It was too good, and given that it’s totally unethical, quite apart from its legality, I couldn’t risk it becoming a habit.

Exactly this actually.

Pianoaholic · 09/02/2026 15:05

Have only been ice skating and roller skating once. Not inclined to go again.
I will never climb Scafell Pike again. I actually enjoyed Snowdon and have been up the tourist route twice.
Scafell pike was nothing like it. There were a few sheer drops and narrow ledges and my kids, DH and some friends were with us so I couldn't 'lose it' but I have never been as petrified in my life.
On the drive back to our holiday place in windermere I passed out and had to be carried/dragged in by DH and I was fit for nothing the rest of that night and next day.
The kids said it was the best day of their holiday!!!
Weather was so crap we didn't even have a good view at the summit.

Nosejobnelly · 09/02/2026 15:06

Horse riding. Fell off (thankfully was ok but was a horrible experience to be out of control on a fast-moving animal).
