What aspect of 'normal' life is alien to you?

PurpleSky300 · 08/02/2026 22:14

By which I mean... what are the "normal" things of life you haven't yet done or experienced, compared to most people?

For me it's:

Driving, I'm hopeless, just can't get it
I've never been to a club
Anything to do with babies
In-laws
A properly "senior" job

@500daysofspringwhy should I care about my appearance? I’m clean. My clothes are ok. What more do you expect of me?

CaffeineAndChords · 09/02/2026 09:15

Amazing how many people do not drive. I assume not everyone lives in London? How tf do you get around? When I used to live in a small town I did not like driving much but had a car as I hated being reliant on other people to taxi me around. It also gave me better career opportunities as I could drive to another town to work. Car, to me, is freedom! Don't need to own it in London but still would rent one if I needed to.

Other Towns and Cities have public transport y'know!
This attitude always baffles me. There's loads of reasons people don't or can't drive.

For me,
Driving
Drinking water
Locking my front door
Having a stable family of origin
Being one of the girls (had no bridesmaids or been one)
In-laws
'Doing' Christmas, kinda just let it happen around me, and actively avoid people who stress about it.
Making my teens get Up and Dressed on weekends and holidays 🤷

I don’t judge anyone who doesn’t care about their appearance but it’s alien to me as someone who does… which is the point of the thread.

Being able to just eat something your offered.
Someone could ask DH if he wants a ham sandwich and he’d say yes and eat the sandwich.
I would refuse because I’d need to know what the ham was like, is it wet? Is it that weird wafer thin, packet ham? is it thick with fatty bits?
the bread, is it pre sliced? Is it crusty? Is it too squishy? does it smell strange? Is there butter? Spread? Mayonnaise? and you can’t really ask all that without appearing to be rude.
I hated going to people houses for tea as a child. Do you like spaghetti bolognaise/cottage pie?
Yes please.
Then the spaghetti bolognaise or cottage pie had mushrooms, lentils, baked beans, sweetcorn or some other random ingredient that I wasn’t expecting and I’d have to try and eat it without gagging.
When I look at people happily loading up food at a buffet, I think how nice it would be to not be bothered by the fact other people are touching the food or to care that your sandwich has touched a slimy looking chicken leg or the crisps have a bit of quiche in them.

Bikergran · 09/02/2026 09:24

I hate this "grazing board" style of buffet, all the different foods not on plates, having been arranged by bare hands, left for ages, and being pawed by everyone using it. Went to one last year, managed to get in early, found some biscuits still wrapped, took a chunk of cheese I could cut the outer layer off, and some grapes I discreetly washed. Didn't trust anything else. Felt vindicated when several guests were ill the day after.

To be fair, a lot of these aren’t ’normal life’; a lot of people might have their nails done but a lot of people don’t and neither aren’t normal. Same with pubs and gambling!

Mine is alcohol. I don’t drink it because I don’t like the taste.

Having parents. Mine died young and when I have met someone and they ask something like ‘does your mum help out?’ with regard to childcare it takes me by surprise.

Holding my pen correctly. Never managed it!

My name is a bit of an anomaly. I’ve always been known by my middle name; it’s jus my name, it’s what my parents called me, but a lot of people seem to think I or they made a conscious decision to change it at some point. And just to add to the confusion a lot of people get my name wrong anyway. I urge anyone on the baby names board NOT to call their child by their middle name!

Online dating. I am newly single after 23 years. I am just horrified by the things my friends tell me about their online dating experiences and will never do it. Just the concept of making myself in to a commodity appalls me. There is just an assumption that I will as that is how people meet these days but no, not for me.

I’m with you . I can’t grasp it at all . Well I just got married in my 40s so hoping I won’t need to again but I find it awful

LemonAndGingerMarmalade · 09/02/2026 09:38

Traitors, love island, MAFS, game shows etc. I just don't find it entertaining.

Wanting a baby.

Enjoying big events, anywhere crowded, big weddings,

Loving your parents, seeing them as friends and wanting to see them. I phone and visit mine out of obligation only.

Yes I'm autistic. 😆

zingally · 09/02/2026 09:38

Having any interest in a "beauty regime". My mum cuts my hair for me, free of charge, 2 or 3 times a year. I dye it at home with a box kit, just so the colour matches the colour I used to be as a child/teenager. I haven't stepped foot in a hair dressers in over a decade.

No interest at all in make-up. I do have a make-up bag somewhere, but the contents is probably 20 years old.

I get irritated by my fingernails as soon as they get any longer than the tips of my fingers. The thought of paying £30 to get them "done" in a nail salon, seems utterly bizarre to me.

Oh yes, the horror of the grazing board. SIL did a beautiful looking one over Christmas but my heart sank because I just knew I wouldn’t be able to eat it. I was hoping to have a slice of brie as it was whole and in paper but FIL got there first with a knife he’d used for pate so that was out.
