Angela Raynor being talked about as possible leader? Surely not.

Ozgirl76 · 06/02/2026 07:12

I get the point of Raynor - she’s the modern Prescott, the “Everyman”, the one who the trad Labour voters might identify with, with the vaping, clubbing and tax evasion.

But as a leader on the world stage? Have we learnt nothing from Boris? Having a deeply unserious leader is surely not what the U.K. needs now, in this time of global turmoil?

Honestly if she becomes leader the U.K. will be an absolute laughing stock.

A lot of the people Angela Rayner claims to represent feel betrayed by her - it's clearly one rule for her and another for other working class people.

I think she'd be excellent.

For Reform. Unfortunately.

It's very sad that our expectations of the character, honesty and values of political leaders are so low now.

Another example of a previous MP who ‘just said sorry’ is Jacqui Smith. She helped herself to approximately 100 thousand pounds of our money during the expenses scandal.

She was severely admonished in Parliament and subsequently lost her seat.

,She wasn’t required to pay back that amount. Although, I believe she repaid some expenses where she, inadvertently, applied for reimbursement for some porn movies, watched by her then husband.

The current PM, Keir, couldn’t wait to put her in the Lords and give her a Baroness title and life peerage in the Lords.

She took the honour…... These thieving people have no shame.

Years ago it was just that we didn’t know as much about our politicians. The ones who resigned were just the tip of the iceberg - those who got caught.

Yeah I will agree with that

but Social Media has a lot to answer for
but with regards to SM you would think that politicians would at least try to be squeaky clean as they must be aware of the power of SM and how anything they say or do can be easily recorded

i can’t make up my mind if they are thick
or just entitled idiots who think they are better than the rest so don’t think about what they are doing

I like Emily Thornberry - heard her on the radio a few times and she is rational and intelligent and makes her point clearly and eloquently.

Mahmood is another clearly intelligent person too.

PP above is right - Labour needs centre left leaders to stay in power.

That's why they picked Starmer last time - well that and the fact that the two women standing against him were both unelectable (Lisa Nandy - god help us all -and Rebecca Long-Bailey, who was a Jezza stooge). But I agree. What was New Labour? Centre left. It's the only place from which Labour has electable at a national level during my lifetime.

WestwardHo1 · 06/02/2026 11:01

I detest Teresa May but at least when demoted she remained an MP.

I agree. Theresa May stayed and did the job her constituents voted her to do

I have gone off Streeting. He is usually a very effective communicator but I don't think he has handled the doctors' strikes especially well, and I gather he was also quite a fan of Mandelson.

He's called Mandelson his 'mentor' in the past. In fact, there was apparently a photo of him with Mandelson on his SM until recently with him stating that here he was with his mentor. One of those photos that doesn't age well!

OhDear111 · 06/02/2026 11:03

Corbyn is besides the point. We know his brand failed. I agree with @Blueskiesandrainbows we cannot risk Rayner.

‘Tis true. Keir is not a good judge of character …….

He seems to have done it again with Mandelson.

Once a thief, always a thief !! Ordinary people like us don’t get rewarded for such bad morals.

I can’t stand him. He’s a Starmer protege, and has been shit for doctors.

I also agree. Theresa was Remainer who bravely tried to meet the rabid demands of Brexit supporters. She's been treated unfairly by the media, and was treated very badly by the petulant pro-Brexiteers. I'm not a Tory voter, but I liked Theresa, for all her faults, and wish she was PM now.

PeppyCoralTiger · 06/02/2026 11:43

AR is how out of touch Labour imagines working class people to be. See the Gorton MP's whatsapp for further insight of how Labour view their WC voters or maybe Gordon Brown's description of a WC woman as a "bigoted woman".

People employed by the state or working for the Labour party might imagine AR connects with actual WC people but that is an insult IMO. People that have struggled will recognise in her someone that has played the system to her very personal financial advantage.

She isn't someone to admire, except if you view someone as a vehicle that might "connect" with how you imagine WC people are, which in itself is insulting.

Those saying it is classist to find AR repugnant are guilty of being classist themselves, ie. implying that WC people aren't bright enough to recognise a chancer when they see one.

Being WC or being uneducated does not mean you communicate in an unprofessional way. She has no gear stick up to the next level, only down. I find the whole situation with the Brighton flat involving her son's money whiffy. I don't like the fact she tried to blame her financial adviser for the not paying the Stamp Duty insightful of her character. Ultimately we are responsible for taking advice or not and researching implications of something that might sound "too good to be true". Particuarly if you're claiming to be savvy, streetwise or capable of holding the position of PM.

MaidOfSteel · 06/02/2026 11:48

I’m a working class, Northern woman, like she used to be. Now she’s just another one who has been corrupted by a bit of power. I don’t want her as our Prime Minister. I think she wouldn’t be a good representative for us across the world.

JustSawJohnny · 06/02/2026 11:52

I love her.

There is a reason why opposition are so threatened by her.

Even Farage likes her and said she is very strong, fierce competition.

People I speak to who hate her don't really seem to know why - they just spout the housing issue but have the 'impression' she's generally terrible and always has been. Why? Because that's the narrative they've been fed by the media and unfortunately a huge percentage of this country are happy to just go along with that without questioning WHY that smear campaign exists.

This issue with the disabled son's housing was complicated and I'm hoping it will pan out well for her.

When you think of all of the absolute fuckery that was glazed over under Boris, it really doesn't seem like a hanging offence.

We need more strong, sensible, non-Etonian women in government. This is the kicker for me.

Same. May had a ton of dignity and actually seemed like a person with some integrity. Not a fan of her policies really but she was head and shoulders above Starmer/ Streeting/ Rayner.

ChevyCamaro · 06/02/2026 11:54

Also, her telling of the story about the late Queen and the picnic in parliament was hilarious 😆

Dear God no

Owlbookend · 06/02/2026 12:03

Angela Rayner would not be on my shortlist of people who i would choose to be PM. However, the idea that she isnt WC or is pretending to be to gain political advantage is ludicrous. This was suggested up thread. There are plenty of politicians (of all parties) who put on a 'man/women of the people act' when they come from advantaged backgrounds. She isnt one of them. This doesnt necessarily make her a good (or bad) candidate for PM. However, she is one of the very small number of MPs who has experienced living on a low income.

How about bringing back David Miliband from US. He seems more serious.
