Angela Raynor being talked about as possible leader? Surely not.

I get the point of Raynor - she’s the modern Prescott, the “Everyman”, the one who the trad Labour voters might identify with, with the vaping, clubbing and tax evasion.

But as a leader on the world stage? Have we learnt nothing from Boris? Having a deeply unserious leader is surely not what the U.K. needs now, in this time of global turmoil?

Honestly if she becomes leader the U.K. will be an absolute laughing stock.

Don't be ridiculous!

There is a distinct possibility HMRC may well say "No money is owed" she hasn't even received a demand to pay yet...

You might like handing over money to HMRC when they haven't even asked for it but most people do not.

@ParmaViolletts Yours is another ridiculous post.....

Rather rude calling people's posts "ridiculous"? I thought you were keen to promote high standards of debate. Or is that only when your own posts are called ridiculous?

She left the party in disgrace I'm not sure why she or anything around her thinks it's ok to even think about being a leader

This isn't true though is it.
She's still an MP, and still a Labour MP.

Although this thread isn't really about facts in general it would appear.

Good point! i sincerely apologise... i will add "ridiculous" to my list of rude words....
Debate of course is dependent on people posting sensible and relatively accurate posts and not nonsense (sorry if that word offends)

Well done for pulling me up on this misdemeanor.

Maybe- but as she was the Deputy PM at the time I am sure she had the ability to call in a few actual RL people into her RL office to assist her in dealing with it.

I agree. She should have been more careful about taking proper advice.

Her reputation is rather tarnished though over the tax business.

Would be nice to have a leader who hasn't already been in trouble for being less than honest about something. She would be a gift to anyone wanting to criticise Labour right now.

Pleasure. I have of course included "cuckoo" in my own swear list, thanks to your assistance.

I do like Angela. But I was a bit disappointed by the free clobber and house issues..

It doesn’t bother me that she is a:
northener
female (actually this is the one thing I like)
determined
working class
swindled tax as most rich people know how to do this well, especially politicians that are not super rich.
whatever else people think badly about her

i just really don’t like her, I just think she is wholly unprofessional and has a string of issues following her / she is too in with the unions and will strangle the country.
Kier is not my cup of tea, but actually he has navigated the last few months well in global terms with his cool diplomatic nature and I think we have been lucky to have him.
I can’t imagine having Angela in these globally fractious times.
If Kier does decide to leave, could we have David Milliband (not Ed), Yvette Cooper or Andy Burnham who are in my mind far better alternatives.

An alternative view is that he was humiliated by the US and China.

His coalition of the willing has two countries including the UK

The EU are running rings around him again

Chagos.

To be fair to the guy, he came in to government with literally zero experience in foreign affairs or government so I dont know why we all said he was amazing at foreign affairs. The proof will be in the pudding down the line to see if he achieved anything as these things take a while to cook. Current achievements..nul.

Apparently HMRC haven't yet sent her a demand for the additional Stamp duty, its not beyond the realms of possibility she doesn't owe anything....

....given that HMRC have lost the repayment details of over £13 billion of student debt/loans...

Angela Rayner has already acknowledged that she owes the extra stamp duty. This is from September;

"I acknowledge that due to my reliance on advice from lawyers which did not properly take account of these provisions, I did not pay the appropriate stamp duty at the time of the purchase,"

Rayner says she has now contacted HMRC to work out the tax she needs to pay...

The question is, what is the exact amount she owes, including interest, plus will she receive a fine on top, e.g. for carelessness.

Plus the issue re her son's trust.

Agree with you on the first sentence, @Noodles1234, but on the second I strongly suspect we'd get whoever the unions prefer - and as you said yourself most of Rayner's climb out of disadvantage was down to them

Margaritasforthewin · 08/02/2026 20:18

I’m northern and working class and she doesn’t represent me or my friends or family.
I would prefer Yvette Cooper.
Next election I might not even vote as we had someone parachuted in! As our area always votes labour. I bet he wouldn’t have been able to find our area on a map before.

And, let's face it, Labour doesn't need to give anyone any more reasons to criticise it right now! Even their own MPs and allies are fed up (see Laura Kuenssberg yesterday morning on which both a Labour MP and the head of the Fire Brigades Union were both criticising the party and its leadership).
