I came across button moon last night on amazon prime and watched some with my 10 year old daughter. I loved that when I was little in the 80s. Dd really liked it too but kept on pointing out the men in that back (clearly visible) moving the puppets, wonder how that escaped me as a child 🤔. And then the spaceship for Mr spoon to go to button moon is actually a tin of heinz beans, tin of pink salmon and a funnel 🤣 brilliant!! Im going to watch some more tonight.

Anyone know of any other 80s cartoons available to bring back memories and laugh at things we didnt notice back then?.

Anyone remember Mary, Mungo and Midge? They lived in a tower block and had to go up to their flat in a life. I thought it was the very height of modern sophistication!

I watched this recently with my 5 year old niece, she loved it! Such fond memories.

What was wrong with Fun House? Admittedly it was a real crazy show where anything could go, but it was also crazy fun and outrageous and you had to use your body and your brain if you wanted to play the game.

🤣🤣🤣🤣. 👏👏👏

Brilliant, thanks for sharing. It's also reminded me of Jackanory.

I loved the story about Kelpies and Prince Coriander.

I absolutely loved The Clangers.

I have Rainbowbrite on dvd. My husband had Thundercats but he loaned it out and never got it back. I am more 90s being born in '86, but my husband was apparently obsessed with Button Moon his Daddy even took him to see the stage show.

Wasitabadger · 02/02/2026 17:45

Penny Crayon & James the cat.

What a lovely trip down memory lane.
I remember this mix from mine and my DS childhood:
Captain Pugwash
Playschool
Hector's house
Rosie and Jim
Camberwick Green ( a music box opened to reveal the character for that days show)
Josie and the Pussycats
Hong Kong Phooey

Rosie creeped me out but I still watched it 😆 🤣 😂

The Shoe People and Tugs were my favourites

I think though if I tried to watch them now I’d be sorely disappointed

I had to Google The Shoe People not that long ago because I wasn't sure I was making up such a random premise. Was pleased to see they did exist but like you I couldn't bring myself to watch it.

I see some people mentioning creepy things... so I'll add Worzel Gummidge if no one's mentioned it.

I used to hide behind the sofa when he swapped his head for a cabbage. I mean come on - I don't want to see that in American Horror Story NOW, so I definitely didn't want to see it at the age of seven after I'd just had my Bernard Matthew's turkey dinosaurs and chips!

I still have the DVD of Button Moon from back then. I showed it to my little granddaughter, and she was quite bemused. The style of children's programmes has changed so much!

The programme I loved most with my own children was You and Me. The themes that they explored were so well done, and Cosmo and Dibs were fantastic characters who really put across what it is to be a toddler/pre schooler. Every episode was beautifully and sensitively done... and funny!

I'd give anything to be able to share You and Me with my little grandchildren.

Terrifying. On the pink windmill show (or something like that).

Simon and the witch
SuperGran
Jossy's Giants (mainly remember the song)
Wackaday (timmy mallett)
Count Duckula
T Bag
Bananaman

Another favourite was BBC's adaptation of the Lion the witch and the wardrobe. Was broadcast in about five or six parts. Beautiful theme music.

Super gran! Amazing!! Did she not die not long ago?

Rosie's ok but Jim just looks like a puppet Ronald McDonald to me.

I went to see Button Moon Live with my grandparents when I was about 8 or 9. It wasn't exactly impressive but for some reason I've never forgotten it! Must have been doing a UK tour and this was somewhere in the Cotswolds in the early 80s!

I also loved Fraggle Rock, Pink Windmill Show, Out of this world and Around the Twist.

Dappy777 · 02/02/2026 17:59

Kids TV was infinitely better in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Oliver Postgate’s stuff in particular was wonderful.

They might not have had the technological wirzardry we have, but they did have charm. Charm is one thing the modern world has lost. Everything today seems so loud and vulgar and ugly and aggressive and in your face. We really have been Americanized. Shows like Blue Peter seemed designed to teach children manners. Everyone speaks with an RP accent, and to modern eyes it seems almost comical. But I don’t think we’ve replaced it with anything better that’s for sure.

I was telling my DD this weekend about the zillion-episode cartoon series from my childhood that would seemingly loop back to the start if you looked away for one day. You were shit out of luck for aeons if you missed the finale. I'm convinced that I never reached the end of Dogtanian, Willie Fog, Ulysses or Cities of Gold, yet I saw some individual episodes half a dozen times😂
