Well I never knew this!

I've just had a lightbulb moment (at least I think I have!).

I never knew until about 2 minutes ago that Jimmy is a diminutive for Jeremy. I thought it was short for James. Or maybe it's for both?

I had this with Liam - I never knew it was short for William until very recently.

I'm still in shock when I found out about the little piggy going to market doesn't mean he went shopping 😢

Shedmistress · 01/02/2026 22:25

I've never known aJeremy who went by Jimmy. Only James. Jimmy Dean for example.

SarahAndQuack · 01/02/2026 22:26

Jimmy is traditionally a diminutive for James. I've not heard it used as a shortening for Jeremy, but I guess why not?

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:26

It's both - James and Jeremy, but James is far more common. I know one Jeremy who is a Jimmy. I think he changed it when 'Watch Out Beadle's About' was at its prime! But as I say, mainly James. I think Jerry is more common for Jeremy.

Davros · 01/02/2026 22:27

I’ve never heard of a Jeremy using Jimmy.

Well I never! I didn’t know that! I didn’t know Jeremy / Jimmy either - all the Jeremy’s I’ve known have gone by Jez

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:29

I think lots of people don't know that Nellie comes from Helen either. Or that Prince Harry is really Prince Henry!

GlasgowGal2014 · 01/02/2026 22:29

I've never heard of Jimmy as a diminutive of Jeremy, I always associate it with James. The main diminutives that spring to mind for Jeremy are Jez, Jezza, Jerry. Which Jeremy have you heard of using Jimmy?

SPQRomanus · 01/02/2026 22:29

Jimmy/Jim is always a diminutive of James not Jeremy.

Myoldbear · 01/02/2026 22:30

Jeremy is sometimes Jem

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 01/02/2026 22:30

I've never met a Jim or Jimmy who wasn't a James, so I think that's where the name originally came from.

Jeremies are usually Jez or Jerry, I think. No reason why they can't be Jimmy, though I suppose.

ThePoshUns · 01/02/2026 22:31

I’ve never known a Jeremy called Jimmy for short. The 2 Jeremy’s that I know are Jem and Jez

threescoops · 01/02/2026 22:32

Liam is the Irish version of William, not a diminutive

YourWinter · 01/02/2026 22:32

I’ve know a few Jeremys and if shortened at all, none were called Jimmy, always Jerry, Jez or Jem. All the Jimmys were actually James.

My uncle is Jimmy short for James.

Yes.
The diminutive of William is Bill/ Billy.

HelenaWilson · 01/02/2026 22:35

Jeremy is sometimes Jem

Which is also a shortening for James.

This

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:38

I think these things are not cut and dried - try asking someone what the Welsh word for John is...! We have six variants!

LaMadrilena · 01/02/2026 22:39

Where on earth have you seen Jimmy as a diminutive of Jeremy???

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2026 22:39

It's still a diminutive as it's the last four letters.

ultracynic · 01/02/2026 22:39

Peggy is a diminutive of Margaret, and so is Daisy (makes a bit more sense as the oxeye daisy is aka Marguerite)

Chiefangel · 01/02/2026 22:40

SwedishEdith · 01/02/2026 22:39

It's still a diminutive as it's the last four letters.

Liam Gallagher as an example, he is actually William Gallagher
