Well I never knew this!

I've just had a lightbulb moment (at least I think I have!).

I never knew until about 2 minutes ago that Jimmy is a diminutive for Jeremy. I thought it was short for James. Or maybe it's for both?

I didn't know until recently that Queenie as a nickname is from Victoria, Ann, Elizabeth etc. any queens name.

I had an older friend who spent her career teaching in primary schools in Glasgow. She once told me Protestant boys called William were Billy for short and Catholic boys called William were Liam for short.

Maybe its different in Ireland
My Irish Grandad was a William known as Bill
And his second son is William known as Liam ,Catholic family.

I had this with Liam - I never knew it was short for William until very recently.

I've always known it to be Bill!

For those claiming age on their side as evidence of Jimmy not being a diminutive of Jeremy, I'm old too!

It's obviously not very common but there's at least one person on the thread who has said they know a Jimmy/Jeremy.

Is she sure it’s not Jem/Jemmy?😁

I'm 47 - almost! I think there were three people by the time I went to bed last night. So it's definitely a thing - plus I mentioned the character in Peaky Blinders who is based on a real person. Four!

Quomphy · 02/02/2026 17:37

The Peaky Blinders character is Jeremiah ‘Jimmy’ Jesus, based on a real Jimmy Jesus. Not Jeremy. I think!

ERthree · 02/02/2026 17:37

Ian is a diminutive of John

It’s not a diminutive

Ohpleeeease · 02/02/2026 17:40

Have we done Ralph/Rafe/Ranulph yet?

Took me a long time to realise that Sinjun was just the pronunciation of St. John and not a completely different name.

Yes I said that in my post! But as Jeremy is the anglicised version of Jeremiah then it's the same diminutive from the same stem!

JohnTheRevelator · 02/02/2026 17:48

I never knew Jimmy was a diminutive of Jeremy. I've known a couple of blokes called Jeremy over the years, one always got called 'Jez' for short, the other one 'Jem'.

Ah, I see, thank you. I never knew Jeremy was a form of Jeremiah until now!

It’s not! It’s Irish.

I think lots of people don't know that Nellie comes from Helen either. Or that Prince Harry is really Prince Henry!

Edited

I always thought Nellie was for Eleanor, I knew a kid at school who was called Nellie at home and her name was Eleanor. Tbf, I don't know any one called Helen or Nellie now.
I have never heard Jimmy for Jeremy of Liam for William either but i can see how they might come about. Some people don't like them regular abbreviations, my cousin is called Elisabeth but my Aunt hates Lizzie so asked everyone to call her Bess.

I think you make a really good point when you say 'regular abbreviations' - there are definitely some that are more common, but there are others that are more rare, doesn't make them any less valid though (although I think others on this thread may disagree with me, but that's fine!) I think some of it is due to evolution of language, but also the fact that back when families had multiple members with the same name they would find other shortened versions to call people so that they didn't end up with a million Auntie Megs - so Margaret for Granny, Meg for Mother, Peg for Daughter, Maggie for Granddaughter and so on. I think Bess is a lovely name for what it's worth (and if it was good enough for Elizabeth the First..!)

Februarysiceandsleet · 02/02/2026 18:30

Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy, and Bess,
They all went together to seek a bird’s nest;
They found a bird’s nest with five eggs in;
They all took one, and left four in.
(Traditional)

Jeanolly · 02/02/2026 18:34

Someone upthread (apologies for not remembering who) said they had an Aunt Zibby shortened from Elizabeth. Zibby is a great name :).

I've just discovered this....we all know about the labels on the back of T-shirts/clothing etc. but I have realised that there is also a label on the left seam of all clothes 😄

A fibre content label is a legal requirement

See here here. As far as I know it doesn’t have to be in the left seam, though.

Also has anyone heard of the name Zedediah? My friend's son has it as a middle name,
