Well I never knew this!

I've just had a lightbulb moment (at least I think I have!).

I never knew until about 2 minutes ago that Jimmy is a diminutive for Jeremy. I thought it was short for James. Or maybe it's for both?

And Jack is a diminutive of John.

Whatwouldnanado · 01/02/2026 22:42

Oh no…the piggy! Always thought he went shopping.

Chiefangel · 01/02/2026 22:40

Liam Gallagher as an example, he is actually William Gallagher

Whaaaat!

Bluesoapysponge · 01/02/2026 22:44

Why is Daisy, Peggy and Polly short for Margaret? Or Jack short for John?

I'm still in shock when I found out about the little piggy going to market doesn't mean he went shopping 😢

What?!!

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:47

Also if you watch Peaky Blinders - Jimmy Jesus. Based on a real life person with the first name Jeremiah - closer to Jeremy than James! RIP BZ, loved your poetry so much.

Alltheyellowbirds · 01/02/2026 22:47

Jim and Jimmy are short for James.

Thats not to say there isn’t a Jeremy out there who’s nickname is Jim.

Miranda65 · 01/02/2026 22:49

The only Jeremy I know uses Jem for short.

Vixenlover · 01/02/2026 22:49

I've never heard of Jimmy as a diminutive of Jeremy, I always associate it with James. The main diminutives that spring to mind for Jeremy are Jez, Jezza, Jerry. Which Jeremy have you heard of using Jimmy?

Jem is diminutive of Jeremy too.

Yeah but that could just be them! Getting it wrong

Why is Daisy, Peggy and Polly short for Margaret? Or Jack short for John?

Daisy because Margaret is Marguerite, which is a daisy. Meggy is a very old diminutive for Margaret, which at some point turned into Peggy. See also Molly and Polly

FishFingerSandwichs · 01/02/2026 22:51

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:45

William John Paul Gallagher too!

That’s just them

Bill is short for William

jimmy is for James

Will was the usual short form for William when DS was at school in the ‘90s. It was a very popular name.

I associate Bill with people who are a lot older, although it may be ‘coming around again,’ to quote Carly Simon. I had two Uncle Bills, who’d both be over 100 now if they hadn’t died first.

Is Prince William ever known as anything but William?

Polly is a diminutive of Mary.
i had an old ndn called Mary whose dh called her Polly.

BrandyandGinger · 01/02/2026 22:51

Liam Gallagher is of Irish descent so it's probably the Irish version of his name they use.
In Ireland the older generations of James' are called either Jimmy or Seamus, which is the Irish version.
The older Jerrys are usually Gerard, but they can also be Jeremiahs. There aren't really any Gerald's.

Arlanymor · 01/02/2026 22:52

FishFingerSandwichs · 01/02/2026 22:51

That’s just them

Is that an issue then? He has Irish descendency doesn't he? Language evolves over time - names are no different.

xPenelopePitstop · 01/02/2026 22:52

I know 2 Jeremys who go by Jem.

Is Prince William ever known as anything but William?

Will is for Wilfred

HelenaWilson · 01/02/2026 22:55

Why is Daisy, Peggy and Polly short for Margaret?

Margaret
Meg - Peg - Peggy.
Moll - Poll - Polly (although that's more usually for Mary.)
Changing the initial letter is common in English diminutives.

No

CurlewKate · 01/02/2026 22:55

Jimmy is short for James, and Liam is the Irish form of William. But Peggy is short for Margaret. So is Polly.

Gahr · 01/02/2026 22:56

Jimmy is not short for Jeremy. It is short for James.
