Does anyone else "hear electricity"?

TheBluntCrab · 31/01/2026 23:45

Just that really. I've always wondered if this is normal. I can't get to sleep because I can hear a low pitched hum..I always hear it but tonight it's annoying me, & the only way I describe it is, it sounds like electricity?? Weird!

Yes, I do. I used to cut out the electricity to the whole house at night, helped a lot.

Ds hears it too.

Shutuptrevor · 31/01/2026 23:49

Yes, I do. Tonight I can hear a high almost hiss.

GreenMarigold · 31/01/2026 23:51

I can’t hear electricity as such but some devices make a high pitched noise that only I of my family can hear. It’s so obvious to me that I can walk in the room and tell you if they are on or not.

AllosaurusMum · 31/01/2026 23:51

Yes. My mom can too. The rest of our family can't

Negroany · 31/01/2026 23:53

Yes.

But I can also see air. I confused my mum a lot when I was small, asking her what all the coloured dots in front of my eyes were. It's just the pixels that make up the world. But I don't think other people can see it.

TheBluntCrab · 31/01/2026 23:53

My DP can't. I have a suspicion that my 3 year old son can too, he's autistic and non verbal, and I'm sure he hears things that not even I can hear sometimes. I think most people tune out to background noise. But not me, and I don't think my son does either.

I can also see the pixelated dots!

Do you have tinnitus OP?

I only 'hear' electricity' when abroad in a humid country and you can hear the electric wires buzzing.

IPM · 31/01/2026 23:55

Yes, me and my eldest son can.

We were only talking about this the other day and saying that when we go to very rural areas or a seaside town we both know, the silence is noticeable.

Yes I have the same! Except it's not certain devices. It's just kind of there?!

That sounds like "visual snow" which is a symptom of B12 deficiency

I dont think I do? I'm not sure 😂 I feel like maybe I'm too young to have it? I don't know 😂

I dont think I'm deficient. Mind you, I last had bloods about a year ago and it said deficiency was unlikely.

I've had tinnitus when I've had a sinus infection or Covid but it's not the same thing.

TheBluntCrab · 31/01/2026 23:58

It has been questioned whether I have undiagnosed autism or something, by many people! I did wonder if maybe that was it? As I read lots of neuro divergent people struggle to tune out noises/sounds. I know my DS who is autistic quite severely hears things and they bother him much more than it would neuro typical.

I used to when I was growing up, but live in a pretty noisy place now so sleep in earplugs. I remember complaining to my mum though about the permanent buzz that was stopping me sleep, and she had no idea what I was talking about. I thought it was just being young though as apparently children and teens can hear more than older people.

Interesting about being ND, I'm ADHD with suspected autism. I can't cope at all with irritating noises at the edge of my hearing, hence the earplugs.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 01/02/2026 00:02

Me! I can feel when next door switch their tv on

Edited

I can't cope either. Even slight noises. It does something too brain and it actually irrationally irritates me and I feel a feel rage inside. Like actual anger. I could go outside and rip a tree out the ground at times.

I get occasional what I called static in my ears, I suppose a ringing but usually I just put a finger in my ear and wiggle and it goes away 😂

I am diagnosed autistic.

Pretty sure I've not had a vitamin B deficiency since childhood (I'm 57).

Oh yes, absolute fury! For me the worst is the noises right at the edge of my hearing - bizarrely, I can cope ok with traffic, or even sirens. But noises I can only barely hear, like people standing outside having a conversation? That's like physical pain. Couldn't manage at all without earplugs at night, and noise-cancelling headphones in the day.

Sorry @TheBluntCrab, I know this wasn't intentionally funny but the image in my mind is cracking me up!

I can just see an angry woman whose lost the plot, running round the local park, ripping out trees with her bare hands 🤣🤣

Negroany · 01/02/2026 00:16

No, it doesn't look like the visual snow images online. It doesn't look like anything. Just if I think about it (because I've had to learn to tune it out) I just see everything in tiny little coloured dots.

You see. I can do loud music. No problem. I love loud music. I can't do the niggly sounds like this electrical hum, I hate sirens, I hate screaming children 😂 (the noise, not actual children) crowded places where there's lots of chatter... It is like a physical pain! It makes my brain hurt!
