Does anyone else "hear electricity"?

Just that really. I've always wondered if this is normal. I can't get to sleep because I can hear a low pitched hum..I always hear it but tonight it's annoying me, & the only way I describe it is, it sounds like electricity?? Weird!

No way! I used to get this as a a child, EHS and I've sent ages researching it before and there's not much out there! I remember on many occasions being laid in bed as a pre teen, and dropping off to sleep and then having this horrendous screaming, screeching sounds in my head. Not my ears, but in my actual head. It was terrifying!

I've never even thought to look into EHS, but it started when I was pregnant and never went away.

I get a loud crash noise like I've just been sandwiched between 2 lorries and a horrible flashing in my eyes.

I also get the flashing in my eyes when I hear certain noises though, pots flattering, cutlery jingling round the sink, really tinny sounding instruments, really nasal voices.

I told my assessor at my autism assessment and she said "well yeah, it's synesthesia" like I should have known.

I would bet that EHS is some sort of synesthesia born from a hypnic jerk though. Tired brains aren't very good at processing input very well.

So very interesting. EHS is more prevalent in children so i understand. I've not had it since I was a teenager. But I will never forget it. It was horrible. What is synesthesia? I've never heard that term before.

I'm 98 percent sure I am autistic.

I just looked up synesthesia and wtf, that's mental, and absolutely fascinating.

Yeah, I've often thought I had something undiagnosed, and my complete sensory overload has actually inke got worse the older I've gotten.

Diagnosed age 50 here ..great birthday present 🤣

I have been known to sit there and literally rock back and fourth with my hands over my ears cos I feel like my head will come explode. Stresses me out. My DP thinks I'm mad 😂

ADHD 😜

It's really fascinating.

I distinctly remember having a visceral reaction to my not so well liked aunt as a child when she had a cold because her voice was nasal before she had a cold, and super nasal while she had one, and when I was asked why I was pulling such a face I said I can see your voice. I got sent to the naughty step because apparently that was rude! I was not allowed to watch Rolf Harris' animal hospital that night. A blessing in disguise really.

Shock horror, late diagnosed autistic, baby!

On the questionnaire it says I recognise things that other people do not, with a range from not at all, to almost always and I've never ticked almost always faster in my life.

Omg. Me too!!!

Me too! It's normal, isn't it? Doesn't everyone see the zillions of ' pixels' ?

ProfessorBinturong · 01/02/2026 01:34

TheBluntCrab · 31/01/2026 23:56

I dont think I do? I'm not sure 😂 I feel like maybe I'm too young to have it? I don't know 😂

Cover your ears (one at a time, then both at once). If the noise gets louder or doesn't change when your ears are covered it's tinnitus. If it gets quieter it's an external noise. If it is electrical it's usually something with transformer or adapter.

SabrinaCarpetCleaner · 01/02/2026 01:36

My daughter and I both hear sound that isn't sound (if that makes sense 😂). We call it brain static, and I think it's just a mix of external and internal/bodily sounds. I can hear it more if I concentrate, ie it gets louder if I concentrate on it. It can't be tinnutis, because I've been aware of it since I was a child.
I think for me, and perhaps my daughter too, it's a symptom of being somewhat hypervigilant (something that comes with being an intrinsically anxious soul!).

Itiswhysofew · 01/02/2026 02:31

It's probably tinnitus.

Yes I am anxious by nature and could well he die to hyper vigilance!

Yes, I get this all the time, no one else in my household hears it, but it’s definitely electrical, though I do also have tinnitus. So annoying.

Itiswhysofew · 01/02/2026 11:04

I have exploding head syndrome, some kind of constant noise in my ears which is probably pulsatile tinnitus and hypnagogic hallucinations.

Interesting. I think I have experienced the same. Although I diagnosed myself with exploding head syndrome when I was a teenager. I was told by a Dr before I have auditory hallucinations. But I don't think this electrical noise that I hear is a hallucination. It's definitely there lol

It's so interesting, I can't say I've got experienced that but honetsly I'm certain I have a spectrum disorder and just spent my life masking it. My therapist (I have CBT for OCD) told me she thinks I may have autism and that my mental health over the years isn't actually a mental illness but autism.

I'm sure my son probably has that though, just the way he reacts to things makes me think he sees things that I do not.

I can hear very high pitched sounds that most people can't. Low pitched sounds I struggle with understanding sometimes if there is background noise but high, I can hear perfectly. Cat repellers, the hum, appliances running. I can even hear my own blood pressure, although it isn't high at all.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 01/02/2026 12:28

I do and I see air too.

7238SM · 31/01/2026 23:54

Do you have tinnitus OP?

I only 'hear' electricity' when abroad in a humid country and you can hear the electric wires buzzing.

I hear electricity. I hear the minutest of sounds - I hate it. Should I be thinking tinnitus now??

WonderingWanda · 01/02/2026 12:59

The hiss of electrical items drives me mad, as do ticking clocks. I have driven my dh crazy over the years hunting for which appliance it is I need to turn off so I can sleep.

blackheartsgirl · 01/02/2026 13:07

Ohh! I used to be able to hear bats until I was about 30 odd,

it’s such a strange high pitched brief series of clicks that sound static. We used to get them flying around at dusk around our house and the neighbours, sadly haven’t seen them for years though

Yes.

But I can also see air. I confused my mum a lot when I was small, asking her what all the coloured dots in front of my eyes were. It's just the pixels that make up the world. But I don't think other people can see it.

I can!!! Like colourful molecules.

Negroany · 01/02/2026 18:09

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 01/02/2026 00:48

It is a very common phenomena, most people will experience some sort of visual snow at some point in their lives.

There are so many potential causes for it, like being extremely tired, overstimulated or having a medical condition that prevents the brain filtering it and filling in gaps of vision, photoreceptors misfiring, that the outliers are people who never experience it ever even if for most people it's acute instances.

I've always had some sort of visual snow, like floaters, flecks of glitter, the odd grainy vision, but it's got significantly more prevalent for me since I started experiencing exploding head syndrome.

What I see is definitely not that.

I know it's not that, because I have, or have had, those things as well!. And it's not at all like floaters (which I have) or grainy vision (which I had until they lasered my retina back together), etc.

It's also constant, not "when I'm tired" etc. And I remember talking to my mum about it when I was about four.

I am autistic though, so it could be linked.
